Facebook messenger and WhatsApp users have been issued an urgent warning over safety fears.
The apps, which are used millions across the world, could fall prey to hackers who could read private messages to friends, family, partners and colleagues.
Both Facebook and WhatsApp have huge loopholes scammers can take advantage of to hack texts on phones.
This is because surveillance start-up Paragon has discovered a method to break into a host of encrypted smartphone apps, according to reports.
Not much is known about the Israeli firm, which was established in 2019, Birmingham Live reports.
But the company claims to have discovered a way to break into encrypted messaging apps remotely.
Gmail, WhatsApp, and Facebook are affected, as well as Signal and Facebook Messenger.
In an in depth article from Forbes, the publication warns: "It claims to give police the power to remotely break into encrypted instant messaging communications, whether that’s WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook Messenger or Gmail, the industry sources said.
"One other spyware industry executive said it also promises to get longer-lasting access to a device, even when it’s rebooted."
A Paragon senior executive for told the publication that the company would only sell its surveillance products to countries that abide by international norms, fundamental rights and freedoms.

On its website, Facebook Messenger carries a guide to keeping safe and secure on its platform.
It writes: "We’re dedicated to making sure Messenger is a safe, private, and secure place for you to connect with the people who matter.
"To do this, we’ve built tools that allow you to stay in control, secure your account, and stay safe on the platform."
WhatsApp chats on the app are end-to-end encrypted but can be accessed on the cloud if they are backed up.
Media files and message histories can also be accessed by authorities with a search warrant.
The cloud services are also susceptible to hacking from scammers, something tech experts have spent years warning online.
