Your Android phone is getting its best free upgrade in years very soon - Express

It has been a big week for . The tech giant held its annual I/O conference in California, unveiling a slew of new perks for that promise to make the world’s most popular smartphone software even better, and these updates could be coming to your phone very soon.

If you own an Android phone, it is currently running either Android 14 or an earlier version of Google’s mobile platform (you can check in your phone’s settings which it is). Only phones released in the last few years are likely to get the newly launched Android 15 - and often only the priciest phones get treated to several years of updates.

Android 15 is available now in beta form - that’s when you can opt in to get the software early, but we don’t recommend doing this on your phone as it’s currently full of bugs. Instead, you should wait until Android 15 is officially released to some Android phones later in the year, most likely in September or October around the expected launch of the new Google Pixel 9 phones.

It’ll then roll out to the latest Galaxy devices such as the series, phones like the , and other newer Androids. It’ll likely then come to older phones later in the year or into 2026.

We don’t think Android 15 is going to be a very noticeable upgrade to your phone, mainly because most of its improvements are subtle changes behind the scenes. Most of the headline features are still relatively niche, but that goes to show just how advanced Android is in 2024 - it isn’t missing much!

One of the new headline features though is called Private Space, which lets you create a hidden area in your phone’s app drawer, only accessible with your fingerprint or other authentication. Google says it’s a place to hide apps such as banking apps that you want prying eyes away from, but you can put any app in there.

For those apps you may have installed accidentally not realising they are dodgy, Android 15 also adds in malicious app blocking. Your phone will be able to detect bad apps and keep them from scraping your personal data. Google says this all works behind the scenes, but the system will also use Google Play Protect to send you a notification if it detects a malicious app in the first place.

If you take a lot of photos, the new Low Light Boost will come in handy. Google says camera apps on phones with Android 15 will be able to preview night time shots more accurately on your screen and will also be able to scan QR codes in darker places.

Google is also adding satellite connectivity options in Android 15. Traditional mobile networks require connection to a mobile mast nearby to work, but recently there have been advances in direct satellite connections, mostly for use in emergency situations in remote locations. The new Android could allow some apps to send SMS messages over satellite, but we’ve yet to see how it’ll all work.

One cool feature coming is unfortunately limited to the US for now, but it will allow our friends across the Atlantic to add digital versions of text-based passes to Google Wallet using their phone camera. Examples include library cards, event tickets and gym memberships. It’s another quick way to store information and carry fewer physical cards around with you.

Another of our favourite new tools is app archiving. This addresses apps you have on your phone that you haven't used for a while, with Android 15 automatically archives these apps in the cloud if you’re running low on storage to make sure you can still receive messages and photos from your most used apps but gives you the option to redownload those that are archived, keeping you signed in to your accounts.

Finally, our last pick of the best Android 15 updates is partial screen recording - you’ll be able to start recording your screen but the file will only be of the specific app and what you’re doing in it. If you receive any notifications, they won’t show up in the recording, keeping your personal information private.

Samsung Galaxy Watch7 passes through the FCC alongside Galaxy Watch FE - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Samsung is expected to launch at least three versions of the Galaxy Watch7 at its next Unpacked event in July - the vanilla, the Classic, and the Pro. A cheaper Galaxy Watch FE may join it too, and although it may not be called that, we'll use that name for now, as it's easy to follow.

A bunch of Samsung smartwatches have been listed by the FCC, with model numbers SM-L300, SM-L305, SM-L310, SM-L315, and SM-R861. L300 and L310 could be the Wi-Fi-only versions of the two sizes for the vanilla Watch7, with L305 and L315 being their respective LTE-capable iterations.

Samsung Galaxy Watch7 passes through the FCC alongside Galaxy Watch FE

That leaves the SM-R861. This stands out doubly because it uses Samsung's old model number assignment scheme, but also because of the number it uses. The Galaxy Watch4 was SM-R860, and the Galaxy Watch FE has also been rumored to launch as the Galaxy Watch4 (2024). So, things do seem pretty obvious at this stage.

Now what's unclear is where the Classic and Pro Galaxy Watch7 models are at - or even the rumored rectangular one. Undoubtedly, the FCC will certify those as well. Or rather, as many as are actually real and not just rumors.

Samsung trolls Apple with "UnCrush" video, responding to controversial iPad Pro ad - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Apple got into a lot of hot water recently for releasing an ad for the new iPad Pros - it's called "Crush!" and the company even issued an apology for it, vowing to not air it on TV. Here it is for your viewing "pleasure":

Samsung couldn't help itself and responded to Apple's ad with a new video of its own, titled "UnCrush", which has the tagline "We would never crush creativity". Take a look:

Obviously, Samsung wants to capitalize on the controversy surrounding Apple's ad, which has pretty universally been hated across the internet. While we appreciate the intent behind Apple's ad (showing that the new iPad Pro can replace all of those objects), why it needed to literally crush everything to make its point is beyond us, and it's not a good look.

As for Samsung's attempt at trolling, it obviously wasn't surprising, and thus it's definitely nowhere near as shocking as Apple's ad. But is it effective? Let us know whether, following all this controversy, you'd consider buying a Galaxy Tab S9 over a new iPad Pro.

'Ghost Of Tsushima' Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam - Forbes

Not long ago, I wrote about how Sony was squandering player goodwill with the Helldivers 2 debacle. The game publisher announced it would require Helldivers 2 players on PC to link their PSN accounts to Steam in order to keep playing the game. The only problem?

A lot of PC gamers either didn’t want to create a PSN account since they don’t own a PlayStation, or simply couldn’t because they lived in one of 177 different countries where that’s simply not possible. Sony ended up backtracking on the decision after enough bad press—and hundreds of thousands of negative Steam user reviews—forced their hand.

But the damage is done, and the good will has already been lost. One of the best PlayStation 4 games ever made, Ghost Of Tsushima, lands on Steam today and already the negative user reviews are in. From what I’ve perused so far, none of the negative reviews have anything to do with the gameplay or the game’s performance on Steam.

Instead, the negative reviews all focus on the PSN requirement. In the case of Ghost Of Tsushima, this was much better advertised. Helldivers 2 waived the requirement for several months before Sony made the announcement, which is largely why it was met with such enormous backlash. Ghost Of Tsushima makes it clear from the outset. It also makes it clear that the requirement is only for the multiplayer co-op portion of the game and the PlayStation overlay, which means you can play the entire single-player campaign—the vast bulk of the game—without a PSN account linked to your Steam account.

My hunch here is that had there never been a Helldivers 2 PSN controversy, and all the bad press that engendered, Ghost Of Tsushima’s PSN requirement would have flown mostly under the radar. Sony made this bed for themselves and now every one of their Steam releases that has multiplayer components will be hit with lots of negative reviews that focus solely on that.

It’s unfortunate timing. The game drops on Steam at the exact same time Ubisoft revealed the first Japanese Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. That game is already embroiled in controversy over one of its main protagonists, Yasuke, and Sony could have easily capitalized on that by making a big deal out of the Ghost Of Tsushima Steam launch. Instead, both games are bogged down in their very own controversies. And this is why we can’t have nice things.

Side-note: I don’t see any official reviews up for the game out on any gaming websites or YouTube, which makes me wonder if review codes were even sent out at all. That’s somewhat worrisome. I’ll have to take it for a spin and see what’s what.

Meet the new hero of Helldivers 2: Dremskiy, a player kicked despite insisting "Im frend," who now has a full Steam friends list after even PlayStation shared the love - Gamesradar

A rocky run of balance patches and technical issues hasn't stopped the Helldivers 2 community from being wholesome as hell, as evidenced by the recent outpouring of support for a sad-looking player named Dremskiy, who is now every Helldiver's friend.

The Dremskiy saga, as future historians will call it, started on May 13 when, as many memes have documented, screenshots emerged of a text chat conversation between Dremskiy and another player named Tolga. It's a tale as old as time: Dremskiy joined a public lobby which wasn't supposed to be public, and Tolga, the squad leader, apologized in advance for having to kick them so they could return to a friends-only session. The best drama authors on the planet would struggle to top the final exchange.

"Im frend," Dremskiy said, voice quavering (I assume).

"Don't make this more difficult," Tolga responded, tearfully (I assume).

The interraction that can make a grown man cry from r/Helldivers

Fast forward mere hours and Dremskiy's story is all over the Helldivers 2 community across Reddit and Discord. Memes, fan art, animations – the whole nine yards. People are calling for a cape or emblem made in Dremskiy's honor. "Im frend" has become a battle cry for camaraderie, complete with a new user flair on the main subreddit, and even developer Arrowhead and publisher PlayStation are in on it.

dremskiy objection!!!!! from r/Helldivers

"For prosperity. For liberty. For democracy. For frend," the developer tweeted earlier today.

"Im frend," PlayStation UK responded, and just this once I won't break out the anti-brand quasar cannon, primarily because I don't have to because the Helldivers 2 community has already replied to loudly remind PlayStation that nobody's forgotten the whole PSN debacle was its idea. You don't just become frend overnight, Sony

Dremskiy, however, did become a community icon almost overnight. Better still, they now have a full friends list on Steam, packed with fellow divers engaging in jolly cooperation. I know this because I found them on Steam – confirming to the best of my ability that it's the correct Dremskiy using their Helldivers 2 playtime – and Steam says their friends list is full.

When I say I found them on Steam, I mean I found them. I was luckily able to chat with Dremskiy to not only confirm this story but also get their thoughts on the whole thing. Turns out they're a graffiti artist and have a Twitch, too.

"Yes I'm the frend," Dremskiy tells me. I ask if they were caught off guard by the sudden wave of attention and friend requests, and if they've actually found some new people to play with. "Indeed," Dremskiy says. "But I only found out today, so I'm filtering through some requests and chats here."

Frend forever and beyond

Dremskiy

"I saw comments which made me smile. Genuinely happy for all of you," they say of the community response. "I was just minding my own business." Fortunately, the sudden spotlight hasn't been a problem for them. "I don't use social media a lot, so yeah its all cool 'n stuff," they say. "But I understand the meme. Because frend :D Always stay positive." Oh, and for the record, there's no hard feelings toward Tolga: "I genuinely am not upset he said I can't play within his party. I was looking for a random match."

Amazingly, they hadn't yet seen that even Arrowhead and PlayStation had joined in on the fun. I alerted them to the tweets above, and their response was golden: "Wait the devs are? You're joking right? Okay now I'm getting a bit anxious if the devs respond and stuff. What am I supposed to say or do?"

I asked if they have a message for the folks who've rallied around the frend banner. "I'm frend," they begin. "Frend forever and beyond. Since the devs are taking notice of this I want to thank them ... A lot of people are complaining about this and that about the game, but as far as I'm seeing it's doing really good." They say their only real problem is "when you dive into the ground and certain areas in the map you would get stuck and glitch."

"Other than that it's just an amazing experience," they say of Helldivers 2, adding that they've clocked over 100 hours in the game and have reached rank 41.

In my search, I also spotted a Steam user named Frend of Dremskiy, which goes to show how far this trend has spread. What's more, Dremskiy has received several Steam awards, including four "Take My Points" medals and five "Warm Blankets." You've got to love a genuine case of players rallying to co-op with someone who, even if their story was slightly dramatized, looked to be in need of friends. Sorry – frends.

This one probably won’t make the store but I couldn’t help it from r/Helldivers

Helldivers 2 dev threatens to make the hardest difficulties even harder: "I think we might have some things in store for the players who coast through everything."

Google wants to make long car rides more fun with new features - Android Central

Google is rolling out new apps and features for Android Auto and Google Built-in.

What you need to know

  • Google is releasing new apps for cars with Android Auto and Google built-in, like Max, Peacock, and Angry Birds, to make your drive a little less dull.
  • Google Cast is also now available on cars with Android Automotive OS so that you can throw video content from your devices right onto your car's screen.
  • Google is also making it a breeze for developers to adapt apps for cars with new guidelines and tools to streamline the whole process.

Google just unveiled a bunch of new features and apps for cars equipped with Google built-in and Android Auto, including entertainment apps like Max, Peacock, and Angry Birds.

However, the news that Google Cast will be available in cars with the Android Automotive OS will probably generate a lot of buzz. This comes as software developers are eager to add more features and capabilities to cars.

Google Cast's arrival on Android Automotive means you'll be able to stream video content from your phone or tablet straight to your car's screen while parked, even if the app doesn’t support native casting. Initially, this feature will roll out in Rivian models, with more cars to follow, Google's announcement says.

Additionally, the Uber Driver app is now on Android Auto, letting drivers accept rides, navigate deliveries, and get all the directions they need on large infotainment screens.

Google also makes it easier for developers to bring existing apps to cars. The company will provide guidelines for creating streamlined in-car experiences and new tools to simplify the process.

As part of this effort, Google is launching a program called "Car ready mobile apps." Basically, the tech giant will check out an existing mobile app to see if it's already car-friendly. If it passes, Google will automatically add it to Android Auto—no extra work for developers.

The program will initially include apps for video, gaming, and browsing while parked, with plans to add more categories later.

Over the past few years, Google has focused on enhancing your in-car entertainment options for times when you're parked or stuck in traffic. At its I/O conference last year, the company revealed plans to bring streaming video and virtual meeting tools to car infotainment screens. Google also announced that Volvo and Polestar would be the first to offer YouTube on their in-car systems, with more automakers following suit later.

In its blog post, Google highlights the growing opportunity to provide safe and seamless connected experiences for drivers and passengers as car technology advances. With this in mind, Google is set to offer more entertainment options for when we're stuck in our cars.

However, as infotainment systems grow flashier and more complex, distraction continues to be a significant issue for modern drivers.
