Google Bard is switching to a more 'capable' language model, CEO confirms - Engadget

People haven't exactly been impressed in the short time since Google released its "experimental conversational AI service" Bard. Coming up against OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing Chat (also powered by OpenAI's GPT-4) users have found its responses to not be as knowledgeable or detailed as its rivals. That could be set to change, however, after Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed on The New York Times podcast "Hard Fork" that Bard will soon be moving from its current LaMDA-based model to larger-scale PaLM datasets in the coming days.

When asked how he felt about responses to Bard's release, Pichai commented: "We clearly have more capable models. Pretty soon, maybe as this goes live, we will be upgrading Bard to some of our more capable PaLM models, so which will bring more capabilities, be it in reasoning, coding."

To frame the difference, Google said it had trained LaMDA with 137 billion parameters when it shared details about the language-based models last year. PaLM, on the other hand, was said to have been trained with around 540 billion parameters. Both models may have evolved and grown since early 2022, but the contrast likely shows why Google is now slowly transitioning Bard over to PaLM, with its larger dataset and more diverse answers.

Pichai claims not to be worried about how fast Google's AI develops compared to its competitors. When Bard first debuted in February, he acknowledged its reliance on LaMDA gave it a smaller scale, but framed having less computing power as a benefit, giving more users the change to test it out and provide feedback. Pichai also ensured that Google would be doing its own analysis of Bard's safety and quality once provided with real-world information.

To that end, Pichai expressed that Google doesn't want to release a "more capable model before we can fully make sure we can handle it well. We are all in very, very early stages. We will have even more capable models to plug in over time. But I don’t want it to be just who’s there first, but getting it right is very important to us."

That thought is on the minds of over 1,800 people (including tech leaders and AI researchers) who have signed an open letter calling for a minimum six month pause on the development of AI technology "more powerful than GPT-4."

Pichai doesn't think this can be effectively done without involving the government, but agrees with the need for guidance: "AI is too important an area not to regulate. It’s also too important an area not to regulate well. So I’m glad these conversations are underway."

E3 2023 cancelled: Gaming's biggest trade event and bastion of internet memes is no longer - Sky News

E3, gaming's biggest trade event, has been cancelled.

Once the obvious home for the industry's biggest players to make major annual announcements, the show has been heavily disrupted since the COVID pandemic and usurped by other initiatives.

The likes of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have become used to hosting their own livestreams instead, showing off their new games throughout the year rather than coalescing around a marquee event.

But this year was supposed to be E3's grand comeback - with a multi-day, in-person conference in Los Angeles scheduled for June for the first time since 2019.

The writing had seemed to be on the wall for some months, though, with PlayStation maker Sony, Nintendo, and Assassin's Creed developer Ubisoft among the companies to have said they wouldn't be going.

E3 organisers Reedpop and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) have now announced its cancellation.

Kyle Marsden-Kish, of Reedpop, said: "This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what's right for the industry and what's right for E3.

"We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn't have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn't overcome."

At its peak, E3 was a mouth-watering proposition for gamers who could look forward to a whole week of surprising reveals and updates about their favourite consoles and franchises.

Fans would tune in from all over the world to watch news conferences from the likes of Microsoft's Xbox division and Elder Scrolls and Fallout studio Bethesda, which included live demos of games in development.

Some fans even took time off work, while younger viewers stayed up late on school nights to hear the latest.

'You're breathtaking' among infamous moments

The first E3 was in 1995, where Sony announced a release date for its first PlayStation console.

Highlights from the 2019 show, which was open to the public as well as industry professionals and media, included John Wick star Keanu Reeves promoting the then upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

"You're breathtaking. You're all breathtaking," he told an adoring audience.

Previous shows had seen a Microsoft executive roll up his sleeve to show off a Grand Theft Auto tattoo by way of announcing the next game's arrival on Xbox; Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr appeared on stage to promote a special Beatles' edition of the Rock Band series; and Nintendo's former US boss Reggie Fils-Aime uttering "my body is ready" while showing off Wii Fit, words that would become a staple of internet memedom.

Other famous attendees have included Elon Musk, Steven Spielberg, Tony Hawk, and the late Pele.

What's next?

Reedpop and the ESA have said they still plan to work together on future events.

In the meantime, June will still likely prove an exciting time for gaming announcements - Summer Games Fest, an online-only showcase that began in lockdown in 2020, will return and publishers like Sony are expected to hold their own digital news events.

ESA Director Explains Why E3 2023 Was Cancelled - Push Square

E3

The news that E3 2023 has been cancelled is only a few hours old, and we are honestly kind of still reeling. Sure, we knew that the venerable industry event had an uphill battle ahead of it, with publishers pulling out left and right, but it still seems kind of surreal, you know?

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Entertainment Software Association (ESA) executive director Stanley Pierre-Louis explains what happened and what we can expect next. For the first in-person event in several years, the ESA partnered with event coordinator ReedPop, and Pierre-Louis explains that "we were off to a strong start. There was interest among exhibitors, industry players, media and certainly the fans. Ultimately, however, there were challenges that proved too large to surmount."

One of these insurmountable challenges was the current development timelines studios have been facing since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and another is the resulting economic turbulence businesses have faced the world over. With less money to go around, some companies have begun to rethink investing in expensive booth space and massive marketing events.

On the subject of E3 returning in 2024, Pierre-Louis sticks to the script, stating that "we're committed to providing an industry platform for marketing and convening, but we want to make sure we find that right balance that meets the needs of the industry. We're certainly going to be listening and ensuring whatever we want to offer meets those needs, and at that time, we will have more news to share."

His answer is completely non-commital, as you might expect. For our two cents, we would suggest it seems like the era of E3 is over. With so many cheaper and more effective ways of getting the word out about upcoming games and projects, not to mention public hesitance following a devastating pandemic, the writing has been on the wall for a long time now. We just hope Sony has been saving the goods for that Showcase we have all been waiting for.

Do you think we will see a return to E3 someday, or are the glory days of convention-going truly behind us? Fire off your red-hot takes in the comments section below.

Apple expected to launch a HUGE new product at June event - Daily Mail

Apple announces its next major event where it's expected to launch a HUGE new product

After nearly eight years of development, Apple is expected to finally unveil its hotly-anticipated mixed reality headset this June.

The tech giant has confirmed that its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) will take place between June 5 and June 9.

Apple published a blog post confirming the dates with a cryptic promo image featuring curving coloured lines – a possible nod to the headset.

Although it didn't make any mention of the headset in the announcement, respected leaker Mark Gurman has said it will finally get its public debut in June.

It will allegedly have 10 cameras and and an operating system called realityOS with mixed reality versions of Apple apps such as FaceTime and Maps.

A glimpse of the new headset? A cryptic promo image for Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this year features curving coloured lines

According to Apple, WWDC will show off the latest developments in its range of software – iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS.

Apple's MR headset: Rumours

Release: Q4 2023

Processors

- One 'higher-end' similar to the M1 or M2

- One lower-end to manage 'sensor-related aspects'

Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E

Price: $3,000 (£2,400)

The five-day event will be presented online, although there will be an opportunity for 'developers and students to celebrate in person at a special experience' hosted at Apple Park, the firm's Cupertino HQ, on opening day.

'WWDC is one of our favorite times of the year at Apple,' said Susan Prescott, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations.

'It's an opportunity to connect with the talented developers from around the globe who make this community so extraordinary.

'WWDC23 is going to be our biggest and most exciting yet, and we can't wait to see many of you online and in person at this very special event!'

According to Gurman, Apple's upcoming mixed reality headset was demonstrated for 100 of the firm's top brass at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California last week.

Expected to cost $3,000 (£2,400), the new headset will overlay digital objects on a view of the real world.

The leaker has described it as 'the next major platform beyond the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch'.

This year's five-day WWDC will be presented online, although there will be an opportunity for 'developers and students to celebrate in person at a special experience' hosted at Apple Park (pictured), the firm's Cupertino HQ, on the opening day (June 5)

'The demonstrations were polished, glitzy and exciting, but many executives are clear-eyed about Apple’s challenges pushing into this new market,' Gurman said in his latest newsletter.

It's long been thought Apple is working on two different augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) products – the first is a headset that would cover the eyes, similar to Meta's Oculus Quest.

The second, a sleeker pair of AR glasses possibly called Apple Glass, will come at a later date.

AR layers computer-generated images on top of an existing reality – Pokémon Go being a famous example – while VR is wholly virtual and mixed reality (MR) combines the two.

Just like the iPhone and the Apple Watch, the headset will be followed by new updated iterations in the following years.

While Gurman thinks the first version will be a 'dud' in terms of sales compared with the company’s existing hardware, future versions will likely do better as the product finds its niche.

For now, Apple will have to explain to consumers why they'd want to own such a device and how it's an improvement over the likes of iPhone and iPad.

Apple's Technology Development Group – the team behind its mixed-reality efforts – has discreetly shown the product to the company’s top decision-makers every year since 2018, Gurman added.

But earlier demos were lower-key affairs compared to the one last week, which was 'Apple's biggest showcase' prior to the official launch.

When exactly it will be released is unknown, although Apple doesn't wait long to release products following their announcement so it will likely hit the shelves later in 2023.

Apple has long been rumoured to be developing an AR wearable. The tech giant filed a patent in 2019 (pictured) that gives a glimpse into what it may be developing behind closed doors
Apple's oft-rumoured augmented reality headset could launch as soon as the fourth quarter of 2022, according to one Hong Kong-based analyst

Ming-Chi Kuo, another analyst and Apple leaker based in Taiwan, has already said that the headset will come packed with two processors – one 'similar' those used in its Mac computers and iPads, and another to manage 'sensor-related aspects'.

Apple has long been rumoured to be developing an AR wearable; the tech giant filed a patent in 2019 that gives a glimpse into what it may be developing behind closed doors.

The patent describes the creation of a virtual user interface that can be used on a device resembling an iPhone, as well as a wireless headset.

These items would then 'provide a live view of at least a portion of the contents that are within the field of view of the cameras and optionally generate video outputs'.

Apple made its first major step into the AR world with the release of ARKit in 2017, its augmented reality platform for developers, which spawned numerous apps for the iPhone and the iPad.

Apple is working on an all-glass smartphone, patent suggests

Apple is working on an iPhone that has a glass display going all the way around, a new patent suggests.

Dubbed 'a single slab of glass', the patent shows a device with displays on both its front and back, as well as touchscreen buttons on its curved glass edges.

Fitting the back of an iPhone with a 360-degree glass display could potentially more than double the display size, without changing the shape or size of the device.

Users of the device could potentially have two different displays on the front and back, or alternatively keep one display facing them if they turned it in their hand.

British product designed Jony Ive, who worked for Apple from 1992 to 2019, previously spoke about the concept of an all-glass iPhone, dubbed 'a single slab of glass', according to reports going back to 2016.

Former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive (left) and Apple CEO Tim Cook inspect the iPhone XR during an Apple event at the Steve Jobs Theatre in September 2018. Ive may have sparked Apple's work on an all-glass iPhone

Ive was responsible for pioneering many of the company's most iconic products, including the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Despite his departure to set up his own design company, work on an all-glass smartphone appears to still be making progress, the new patent suggests.

According to a report last year, Ive had a hand in delaying Apple's augmented reality (AR) product, still yet to hit the market.

The AR headset was originally envisioned as dependent on an external device resembling a small Mac that handled most of its processing power and wirelessly broadcast the information to the headset.

While that would have made the headset much more powerful, Ive reportedly disliked the idea of making a headset that was contingent on separate hardware.

CHRISTA D'SOUZA sounds a warning after Spain's Queen sported a startling silver streak - Daily Mail

Sorry Letizia but going grey just says a woman has given up: CHRISTA D'SOUZA sounds a warning after Spain's Queen sported a startling silver streak

My goodness, Queen Letizia of Spain, 50, is beautiful. That skin. That figure. And that hair — luscious and brown and now with a single grey streak running down one side. Although on the hair front, if I may be so bold, Your Majesty, are you sure you're OK with the grey?

I know it's become a thing, the whole #GreyHairDontCare movement, and I know we all want to be our authentic, natural selves, but does it actually look better?

And if I may be even bolder, what are your other half's thoughts on the subject?

I'm only asking the question because when I decided to embrace the grey, my other half wasn't happy about it at all.

Not that he dared tell me at the time. It was only after I'd 'gone back to myself', as he put it, when I caved in and started dyeing it ashy blonde just over a year ago, that he admitted how much he had hated it.

Queen Letizia of Spain pictured earlier this month, sporting a streak of her grey hair at an engagement

And if I only had a fiver for every person who was with him on that, I would be a very rich woman now.

But let's scroll back to six years ago. I was 57 and had been thinking about grey for a while, having started to go noticeably so in my late 40s and getting tired of having to cover it up every eight weeks.

However, it was not until 2017 — buoyed, probably, by Kim Kardashian who showed up at a Tom Ford show with a silver platinum mane — that I decided to actually take the plunge.

My colourist, Josh Wood, the superstar responsible for model Kristen McMenamy's waist-length silver locks, was reluctant, warning me that it would make me look older and would take several goes because of all my red undertones.

But I was adamant. He was right. It took three visits, with a ton of blue titanium rinses in between. It also required a weekly professional blow-dry to look at its best.

Don't get me wrong. I was mad for it at first and frankly didn't care a hoot what anyone else thought. It just felt so 'current' every time I caught a glimpse of it in the mirror. And clever, too. Yes, one can be grey-haired and sexy, I thought to myself.

And then came lockdown when I didn't have access to a salon for months. Oh dear. There are some pictures of me at my 60th birthday with literally three-tiered hair: orange or red on the ends; blue-grey in the middle; and then, at the top, dark brunette with lots of wiry white bits sprouting out the top.

As Queen Letizia will know, those disobedient grey hairs march to the beat of their own drum. But then, as Josh had warned me, that is the problem with being a dark brunette, wanting to go grey. It requires almost 24/7 maintenance, especially as the grey starts to overtake the brown.

Letizia opted to leave one streak grey
She didn't cover the greying strand in dye

Honestly, I looked about 103. It's maddening the way grey hair is such a potent semaphore for old age. Which is fine if you are, say, the magnificent Christine Lagarde, 67-year-old president of the European Central Bank, but I am very much not.

Unless it's styled and blow-dried within an inch of its life, grey spells 'I've given up'. It shouldn't be that way, and it doesn't apply to everyone.

I adore, for example, how it looks on Meghan Markle's mum, Doria, 66. The 64-year-old actress Andie MacDowell, with her silver ringlets, just about gets away with it, but readers, that's because she's a model as well as an actress. As Josh put it: 'The grey was way too cold on your skin tone. It looked good when it was blow-dried, but still, it was a too strong, slightly sad colour.'

Christa, pictured, asks: 'I know it's become a thing, the whole #GreyHairDontCare movement, and I know we all want to be our authentic, natural selves, but does it actually look better?'

I know what he means. It ended up draining me, and how I looked eventually had an effect on the way I felt and perhaps the way others reacted to me.

I belong to a WhatsApp group called The Hormonal Voyagers — a bunch of good female friends in which I am the oldest but had never felt that way.

Well, with the grey hair, suddenly I was the Granny of the Group. Meanwhile, whether I went to the beauty salon or not, I was offered many more seats on buses and trains than I am now. My two sons would never say anything, not because they're diplomatic, but because they don't care one way or another.

My younger son's wife, though, noticed, big time, and when I 'went back to myself' she heartily approved — as does, I think, every single one of my friends.

It is such a liminal space, that period between 50 to 65 (obviously I keep moving the goal posts the older I get). You're neither one thing nor the other. And yet I see too many women — particularly British women — 'give up' before they have to.

Glossy chestnut, with not a hint of grey, looks a little ridiculous on a 90-year-old, I agree, but do I want to look my age if I don't have to?

Wasn't hair dye actually a key step forward for female empowerment? As Nora Ephron said: 'It's the most powerful weapon older women have against the youth culture.' Obviously, we all want to be our authentic selves, but in today's youth-obsessed world you don't get extra marks for looking exactly the age you are, just as you don't get extra marks for, say, not having an anaesthetic for a filling or even an epidural when you give birth.

Fighting a battle against the grey by going blonde not only suits my skin colour better, but it's also a lot cheaper, needing to be retouched only every three months or so, especially if I'm going to be in the sun. And, like I said, I cannot tell you how much my other half prefers it.

Queen Letizia, I feel you. Why should you kowtow to the ageist beauty industry — indeed, why should any of us?

But let's circle back in 18 months or so. You may well feel very differently about the grey by then.

Resident Evil 4 - Clockwork Castellans And Primal Knife Guide - GameSpot

Resident Evil 4 Remake has a special challenge that you can tackle throughout the campaign. In it, you'll need to find Clockwork Castellans, little toy soldiers that can be shot. If you manage to destroy all 16, you'll receive a nifty reward. Here's our Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellans guide to help you with all their locations so you can acquire the Primal Knife.

Table of Contents [hide]

The Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellans are found in all three major zones: Village, Castle, and Island. These toy soldiers emit a unique sound: a squeaky, ticking noise, as if gears are spinning around, letting you know one is near. Likewise, you'll tend to discover at least one in every chapter, and you can backtrack in most (not all) instances, unless there's a point of no return. Likewise, please be reminded that our Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellans guide contains spoilers.

Village Clockwork Castellans

Chapter 1: Lakeside Settlement

  • Location: Near the end of Chapter 1, Leon will go through a tunnel to a clearing that has a hut with a villager that's throwing dynamite. Eliminate the hostiles and check the ruined roof of the house.
  • Backtrack: It's likely that you'll miss this one due to all the noise being made by enemies, but don't worry since you can return later once you've beaten Del Lago and have an undamaged boat (i.e. Chapter 4). In fact, you can tackle this along with another toy soldier later.

Chapter 2: Factory

  • Location: After obtaining the Hexagonal Emblem from the Mountain Village, you can pass through this gate and the wooded pathway. When you spot a shed near a well that has a dangling treasure, you'll see a note telling you about the "toy soldiers" (i.e. Clockwork Castellans). The object itself is inside the shed. Just watch out since a Chainsaw Villager is nearby.
  • Backtrack: In all likelihood, this will be the first Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellan that you'll discover (what with the note informing you about these collectibles). In case you do miss it, you can still return here at any point in time as long as you don't go to the Villa in Chapter 5.

Chapter 3: Quarry/Lake Merchant

  • Location: Once you meet the Merchant past the Quarry area, you'll see a ladder. Climb down and look at the jetty to the right.
  • Backtrack: It's possible to return here as long as you haven't opened the Church gate using the Insignia Key in Chapter 5.

Chapter 4: Forest Altar/Lakeside Settlement

  • Location: Use the Insignia Key on the gate off to the side of the Lakeside Settlement. It'll lead you to the Forest Altar area, where you can shoot this object behind the wooden fence.
  • Backtrack: If you forgot to destroy the Clockwork Castellan in Chapter 1, now would be a good time to do so. Again, don't just head straight to the Church.

Chapter 5: Village Chief's House

  • Location: You'll go to this location earlier in the campaign, and you'll notice a ladder in the second-floor bedroom. Revisit this place once Ashley is with you, and boost her up.
  • Backtrack: As long as you don't go to the Villa immediately, you'll be fine. Also, you might as well tackle the Savage Mutt request while you're at it.

Chapter 6: Checkpoint

  • Location: Past the merchant and the first work area, you'll see a shed along a cliffside path. This Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellan is on the opposite cliff. It might be hard to see due to the bonfire.
  • Backtrack: It won't be possible to return to this location, as this path leads to the Mendez boss fight and the Castle zone.

Castle Clockwork Castellans

Chapter 7: Treasury

  • Location: This is an unbelievably long chapter, which will lead to the Dungeon and a battle against a Garrador. After that, you'll enter a room filled with jugs and other supplies. The Clockwork Castellan is on a shelf. If you reach the Sword Puzzle, then you've gone too far.
  • Backtrack: The best time to return here would be in Chapter 12, as long as you don't ride the elevator at the top of the Clock Tower.

Chapter 8: Castle Battlements

  • Location: This Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellan can be found on the right-hand side tower from the ramparts where you initially see the second El Gigante boss. Don't bother grabbing it yet while the boss is alive, as you'll have to continuously avoid its thrown boulders. Instead, make your way to the left so you can use the cannon to blow it up. Once it's dead, you can go back to the previous ramparts segment, though you still need to fight a few cultists.
  • Backtrack: If you forgot about this one, then you can come back during Chapter 12, as long as you don't ride the elevator at the top of the Clock Tower.

Chapter 9: Courtyard

  • Location: Once you reach the Courtyard maze, head to the middle and follow the looping path as it leads you to the northwest corner. The item is behind some crates.
  • Backtrack: Again, backtracking once you reach Chapter 12 would be a good idea.

Chapter 10: Underground Tunnel

  • Location: After escaping The Depths, you'll reach a sewer area with a small Merchant hub. Look across from the Merchant's spot and you'll see this hanging above the grate.
  • Backtrack: Once you trigger the Verdugo boss fight, you won't be able to backtrack to this location anymore.

Chapter 11: Mines

  • Location: After clearing the El Gigante Duo battle, Leon and Luis will reach a mine shaft. The two will then ride a cart, eventually reaching the Stopover area. Enter the house and check the wood panel along the roof to find this (it's close to the treasure chest on the balcony).
  • Backtrack: Once you ride the second mine cart, you won't be able to go back here.

Chapter 12: Clock Tower

  • Location: After a long trek, Leon will be back at the opposite side of the Ballroom, which has a Merchant hub and a Gondola. You can ride it to the Clock Tower's lower level. There, you'll be able to shoot this object, which is on a box in a nook.
  • Backtrack: You can go back and forth between the Clock Tower and the Castle's main area using the Gondola. In fact, as long as you keep a manual save at the Merchant's spot, you can revisit most of the other areas to see what you might have missed. However, again, once you ride the elevator at the top of the Clock Tower, you won't be able to go back to the lower level, let alone the Castle's main area.

Island Clockwork Castellans

Chapter 13: Wharf (North)

  • Location: Past the Wharf section, you'll go through several tunnels until you arrive at a loading bay (which happens to have another soldier with a rocket launcher). Take out the hostiles, then look for this object near a forklift, truck, and treasure chest.
  • Backtrack: If you drop down off to the side of the Holding Cell, you won't be able to go back up.

Chapter 14: Amber Storeroom/Campsite

  • Location: Leon and Ashley will trudge along until they ride the lift to the Amber Storeroom. There's a cutscene that plays when you touch the large chunk of amber, and Leon will be able to open the metal doors. Follow the looping path until you see a small control room.
  • Backtrack: You can return here as long as you do not enter the metal door/crank door inside the Specimen Storage building in Chapter 15.

Chapter 15: Specimen Storage

  • Location: The Cliffside Ruins area has the last set of Blue Medallions and, past that, there's the Specimen Storage building. The Clockwork Castellan is on the ceiling in the small room inside this building.
  • Backtrack: If you rotate the crank and go through the metal door, you won't be able to backtrack to the previous areas of the Island.

Chapter 16: Finale Escape Sequence

  • Location: This is the last Resident Evil 4 Clockwork Castellan in the campaign. Fittingly enough, you'll stumble upon it after you beat the game's final boss, Lord Saddler. There's a finale section where you only have a little over two minutes to escape. At one point, an infected will grab Leon, and he'll get pushed away. The room beyond has this collectible, sitting on a crate behind a green forklift.
  • Backtrack: If you miss this one, then we hope that you did a manual save at the Merchant's spot just before the final boss. You'll have to battle Lord Saddler again so you can redo the escape sequence.
