Microsoft accused of damaging Guardian’s reputation with AI-generated poll - The Guardian

The Guardian has accused Microsoft of damaging its journalistic reputation by publishing an AI-generated poll speculating on the cause of a woman’s death next to an article by the news publisher.

Microsoft’s news aggregation service published the automated poll next to a Guardian story about the death of Lilie James, a 21-year-old water polo coach who was found dead with serious head injuries at a school in Sydney last week.

The poll, created by an AI program, asked: “What do you think is the reason behind the woman’s death?” Readers were then asked to choose from three options: murder, accident or suicide.

Readers reacted angrily to the poll, which has subsequently been taken down – although highly critical reader comments on the deleted survey were still online as of Tuesday morning.

A reader said one of the Guardian reporters bylined on the adjacent story, who had nothing to do with the poll, should be sacked. Another wrote: “This has to be the most pathetic, disgusting poll I’ve ever seen.”

The chief executive of the Guardian Media Group, Anna Bateson, outlined her concerns about the AI-generated poll in a letter to Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith.

She said the incident was potentially distressing for James’s family and had caused “significant reputational damage” to the organisation as well as damaging the reputation of the journalists who wrote the story.

“This is clearly an inappropriate use of genAI [generative AI] by Microsoft on a potentially distressing public interest story, originally written and published by Guardian journalists,” she wrote.

Bateson added that it had demonstrated “the important role that a strong copyright framework plays in enabling publishers to be able to negotiate the terms on which our journalism is used”.

Microsoft has a licence with the Guardian to publish the news organisation’s journalism. The Guardian article and accompanying poll appeared on Microsoft Start, a news aggregation website and app.

Bateson asked for assurances from Smith that: Microsoft will not apply experimental AI technology on or alongside Guardian journalism without the news publisher’s approval; and Microsoft will always make it clear to users when AI tools are used to create additional units and features next to trusted news brands like the Guardian. Bateson said there was a “strong case” for Microsoft adding a note to the article taking responsibility for the poll.

The GMG chief executive added that while this week’s AI safety summit was looking at long-term safety, Microsoft and other platforms needed to outline how they would prioritise trusted information, fair reward for licensing journalism and more transparency and safeguards for consumers around use of AI.

Microsoft has been contacted for comment.

Apple will use lighter and better molded glass for 16 Pro telephoto - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Apple will turn to molded glass lenses for the 2024 Pro models' telephoto cameras. According to a supply chain report, Largan will exclusively cover the needs of next year's telephoto lenses.

Molded glass lenses are thinner and lighter than traditional ground glass at the same magnification distance. That means that the 120mm zoom lens of the 15 Pro Max can be incorporated into the smaller iPhone 16 Pro in 2024, bringing it on par with the 16 Pro Max.

Apple will use lighter and better molded glass for 16 Pro telephoto

Due to the molded glass lenses' inherent complexity, Apple is already prepping for next year's iPhone Pro models. Reports suggest that the company is practically hogging the supply chain with orders.

Apple MacBook Pro: New laptops revealed with new chips – and new colours - The Independent

Apple has revealed an updated version of its MacBook Pro, featuring new chips and a new colour.

The new computer was launched at its ‘Scary Fast’ event. The only other launch from the event was an update to the iMac, which was first released in 2021, which receives a new processor but no other changes.

Both the new laptops and the updated iMac are powered by Apple’s new M3 chip. That is the third generation of the company’s own Apple Silicon chips since it began producing them in 2020.

Apple said that the M3 chip was around 15-30 per cent faster than the previous M2. But it preferred to compare its performance with the Intel chips that it used in its computers until 2019, in what appeared to be a gesture of humility about the changes in the new line-up.

Apple said that the base version of the M3 is 7.4 times faster for video editing than the MacBook Pro with Intel’s old Core i7 processor, for instance, and up to 60 per cent faster than its M1-powered predecessor. It gave very few comparisons between the new chips and the M2 family, which was only released in January.

As well as the performance improvements, Apple said that the new chips will allow for up to 22 hours of battery life and MacBook Pro models that will include up to 128GB of memory.

As well as the base version of the M3, which will go into the new 24-inch iMac and 14-inch MacBook Pro, Apple launched the more powerful M3 Pro and M3 Max. It is the first time that Apple has unveiled three chips at once – in previous generations, Apple launched the base version of the processor before higher-powered versions some months later.

For now, those higher-end chips will only be available in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models launched today. Other computers such as the Mac Studio that use those professional-focused chips will stay on the M2 generation, and a rumoured revamp of the iMac Pro did not arrive.

In addition to the new chip, Apple announced a new “space black” colour for the MacBook Pro. It specifically pointed out that it used a particular kind of aluminium that would not pick up fingerprints.

The updated 14-inch MacBook Pro received a price cut from $1,999 to $1,599. All of the updated computers will go on sale next week, with the exception of the MacBook Pro with M3 Max, which will arrive later in November.

Those three announcements – a new family of chips, alongside a new iMac and two versions of the MacBook Pro to put them in – were the only announcements from the event. Apple also removed the 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro from its line-up, but did not announce it during the event.

Some rumours had suggested that Apple would make the move to USB-C for its Mac accessories such as keyboards and trackpads, after it dropped the old Lightning cable for its iPhone last month. But listings on the Apple website said it was still providing that Lightning cable for the new iMac, and Apple made no mention of new USB-C accessories.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook closed the event by suggesting there would be no more major announcements for the rest of the year. The Hallowe’en themed event included spooky music and pictures of a cloudy Apple campus, and lasted only 30 minutes, unusually short for an Apple event.

The livestreamed launched had been odd from the beginning. Apple held it at night time rather than its standard morning launch, as well as holding it much later in the year than usual, and announced it with relatively little preparation.

Apple gears up for 'Scary Fast' launch event TODAY - here is everything you can expect - Daily Mail

  • The entirely virtual event is due to start at 16:59 PT / 19:59 ET (23:59 GMT) today
  • Apple is expected to unveil new processing chips and updates to its Mac range

Apple will be hoping to dish out more treats than tricks later when it hosts a surprise 'Scary Fast' pre-Halloween launch event.

It is unlikely to match the excitement generated by the iPhone 15 unveiling last month, but insiders say fans can still expect updates to the tech firm's Mac range to go along with new processing chips.

Almost every Apple event invitation includes a themed Apple logo that hints at what to expect.

This time, the company's events page has an animated Apple logo that transforms into the 'Finder' icon from the Mac operating system, suggesting that is what the launch will focus on.

Starting at 16:59 PT / 19:59 ET (23:59 GMT) on October 30, the event is scheduled far later than most Apple unveilings and unusually is also entirely virtual.

Excitement building: Apple has been staying quiet about what might be in store for this surprise Halloween event but the tagline, 'Scary Fast', may suggest something big

Current Apple Mac prices

iMac 24"

  • £1,399 ($1,696) - £1,799 ($2,180.92)

MacBook Pro 13"

  •  £1,349 (1635.39) - £1,549 ($1,877.84)

MacBook Pro 14"

  • £2,149 ($2605.22) - £3,349 ($4,059.98)

MacBook Pro 16"

  • £2,699 ($3271.98) - £3,749 ($4544.89)

MacBook Air 13" (M2 Chip)

  • £1,149 ($1,392.93) - £1,449 ($1,756.62)

MacBook Air 15" (M2 Chip)

  •  £1,399 ($1,696) - £1,599 ($1,938.46)
The latest MacBook Air models do include the newer M2 Chip

Based on the tagline and finder icon, some insiders have suggested that Apple may be preparing to unveil its long-awaited M3 chip.

Tech writer Mark Gurman claims there will be three of these new Mac chips launched at the event.

'The M3 chip line is destined to be a considerable leap from the M2, bringing vastly improved speeds as well as better efficiency to improve battery life on notebooks,' he said

Most current MacBooks use Apple's M2 chip, with the latest M2 models arriving last summer with the update of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Insiders believe the high-end and expensive 14" and 16" MacBook Pro could be in line for an upgrade.

If these more advanced models do get new chips, it will have been only 11 months since their previous upgrades.

The iMac, Apple's desktop computer, meanwhile still uses the older M1 chip and has not been updated in two years.

Many have speculated that this release could see the iMac at least being upgraded to an M2 model.

Veteran Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the event will see the release of the M3 series of MacBook Pro, despite having previously suggested that the release was unlikely until 2024.

While a Mac-related launch is the most common theory, there have been suggestions that a new iPad might also be on the release schedule.

Earlier this month, rumours circulated that an upcoming release date would see the launch of a new range of tablets.

However, the day only saw the announcement of a new Apple Pencil leading some to speculate that the iPad release may have been delayed to coincide with the Halloween event.

Apple fans can watch the launch via a livestream on the company's homepage and YouTube channel.

It will be unusual because it is happening in the evening instead of the morning like most of the company's other product announcements.

The Apple logo on the event's page transforms into this glowing version of the Mac OS Finder icon
In a possible hint as to what's coming, the event page references Apple's signature line of Mac computers
The inclusion of the Mac Finder icon has left many commentators with little doubt that there will be a new line of Mac computers released at the Halloween-themed event

This event comes after the less-than-smooth launch of the new iPhone 15 range which saw the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models plagued by problems.

Most significantly, some users reported that their phones hit temperatures of up to 48 degrees during normal use

The issue was so bad that Apple was forced to issue a software update to fix a bug which was supposedly causing the overheating.

The new iPhones also experienced discolouration of the new titanium frame and in some cases appeared to crack easily in users' hands.

One review posted to YouTube appeared to show the iPhone 15 Pro Max bending and snapping with only a small amount of pressure.

More recently several users on social media reported that their new phones were showing signs of severe 'screen burn', leaving ghostly images over the display.

Pixel 8 review: Google’s smaller, longer-lasting Android - The Guardian

Google’s standard Pixel 8 gets a little smaller, faster and smarter, while lasting longer than the competition with seven years of updates.

The new Android costs £699 (€799/$699/A$1,199) – a £100 increase on last year’s model – but still undercuts the competition from Samsung and Apple, which cost about £800.

By shrinking a little compared with the outgoing model, the Pixel 8 has become one of the few smaller premium phones available. The 6.2in 120Hz OLED screen is bright, crisp and smooth while still being large enough for apps and video. The rounded aluminium sides and curved glass back feel nice and are easy to hold.

The back of the Pixel 8 showing its aluminium camera bar design.

The phone has the same upgraded 2D face unlock system as the Pixel 8 Pro, with a fast and good under-display fingerprint scanner. It has Google’s latest Tensor G3 chip, which performed great at day-to-day tasks and handled games easily. The battery lasts slightly longer than its predecessor at about 36 hours between charges. It takes about 80 minutes to charge fully using a 30W power adaptor (not included), hitting 50% in less than 30 minutes.

Specifications

  • Screen: 6.2in 120Hz FHD+ OLED (428ppi)

  • Processor: Google Tensor G3

  • RAM: 8GB

  • Storage: 128 or 256GB

  • Operating system: Android 14

  • Camera: 50MP + 12MP ultrawide, 10.5MP selfie

  • Connectivity: 5G, eSIM, wifi 7, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3 and GNSS

  • Water resistance: IP68 (1.5m for 30 minutes)

  • Dimensions: 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9mm

  • Weight: 187g

Android 14 with seven years of updates

The AI wallpaper generation system of the Pixel 8.

The big upgrade for the Pixel phones this year is the promise of seven years of Android and security updates, meaning they will be safe to use until at least October 2030. Few others offers as long, bringing Google up to par with Apple’s iPhones – with only Fairphone providing longer at 10 years of support. Extended support means you can keep the phone longer and its resale value for the second- and third-hand market will probably be much higher.

Google has packed the Pixel 8 with many of its new generative AI features including various image and video editing tools, new abilities for its voice assistant and more promised in updates in the near future. For more on the Magic Editor and other features, please see the Pixel 8 Pro review.

Camera

A Pixel 8 taking a macrophotography shot.

The Pixel 8 has the same excellent main camera as the 8 Pro, which includes a 2x optical zoom using the centre of the sensor. It is a big upgrade on predecessors, offering better low-light performance and faster, sharper shots. The 12MP ultra-wide camera is also solid and now used for a fun macrophotography mode for closeup shots of objects.

The Pixel 8 also gets most of the same generative AI tools as the 8 Pro including Best Take, Magic Editor and Audio Magic Eraser. But it lacks full manual control in the camera app and some more advanced features.

Overall, the Pixel 8’s camera is one of the best on the market but the lack of an optical zoom lens is disappointing.

Sustainability

The end of the Google Pixel 8 showing the USB-C port.

Google does not provide an expected lifespan for the battery but it should last in excess of 500 full-charge cycles with at least 80% of its original capacity. The phone is repairable by Google and third-party shops, with genuine replacement parts to be available from iFixit soon. Out-of-warranty screen replacements from Google cost £66 and batteries £36.

The Pixel 8 is made with at least 18% recycled materials, including aluminium, plastic and tin. The company breaks down the phone’s environmental impact in its report. Google will recycle old devices free of charge.

Price

The Google Pixel 8 costs from £699 (€799/$699/A$1,199).

For comparison the Pixel 7a costs £449, the Pixel 8 Pro costs £999, the Samsung Galaxy S23 costs £849, the Fairphone 5 costs £649 and the iPhone 15 costs £799.

Verdict

The Pixel 8 is not quite the same smashing bargain its predecessors once were – that honour is now the realm of the Pixel 7a – but it still offers a lot of phone for the money.

The fit, finish and feel is top notch. The phone is responsive and smooth. The battery life is decent. The main camera is excellent but the lack of an extended optical zoom is slightly disappointing, even if it has been a similar formula for Google for several years.

The 6.2in screen moves the Pixel 8 closer to the underserved market of smaller but top-end phones, of which there are only a handful to choose from. Google’s generative AI features are certainly novel, but it is the extended seven-year software support that truly sets it apart.

It does not shine quite as bright as its bigger sibling but the Pixel 8 is still a great smaller phone worth looking at.

Pros: seven years of software updates, good camera, great screen in smaller body, solid battery life, recycled aluminium, impressive local and generative AI features, undercuts rivals on price.

Cons: price increase, no extended optical zoom for camera, 2D face unlock not as advanced as 3D scanners, raw performance short of best in class.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 looks likely to launch in January - TechRadar

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series
The Samsung Galaxy S23 phones launched this year (Image credit: Samsung)

The Samsung Galaxy S23 phones were unveiled on February 1, 2023, but it looks increasingly likely that the Samsung Galaxy S24 series is going to show up earlier in 2024 – probably before the end of January.

As per seasoned tipster @UniverseIce on Chinese social media site Weibo (via @Tech_Reve and Google Translate), the Galaxy S24 has now entered mass production, which puts it on course for a "mid-to-late January" launch.

That said, sources speaking to SamMobile suggest an "early-to-mid January" launch is still a possibility, though "things could go either way". Everyone seems to be agreed that January is the month, though the exact date is yet to be fixed.

It's certainly plausible that there's still some uncertainty even inside Samsung, and that a specific date for the launch has yet to be decided on. No doubt there will be another Samsung Unpacked event attached, and we will of course cover it all live.

Starting early

Samsung Galaxy S24 launch date rumors have been rather thin on the ground up to this point, but January has previously been mentioned by one tipster, so it's almost certain that Samsung wants to get its flagship phones out earlier than it did this year.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series launched on February 9, 2022, while the Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup was unveiled on January 14, 2021. These launch dates aren't quite as consistent as they are for, say, the iPhone, but they're always early in the year.

Even with a potential launch date several months away, the Galaxy S24 rumors and leaks are continuing to appear on a regular basis. In recent days we've heard updates about more RAM, better screens, and satellite connectivity for these phones.

Another rumor we've heard is that Samsung will go back to using both its own Exynos chip as well as the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 inside the Galaxy S24, so the performance you get from it might depend on where in the world you happen to buy it form.

Google bans 12 popular Android apps - millions warned to delete them immediately - The Mirror

If you have an Android phone in your pocket you might want to check it without delay. Security experts at Dr.Web, have discovered a dozen popular applications that are infecting phones with highly irritating adware that bombards screens with annoying sponsored messages. Although it might not sound that concerning this type of scam can end up generating huge sums of money for cyber crooks whilst users face phones that are clogged up with content that they’ve never agreed to see.

What makes this latest attack even more concerning is the amount of downloads some of the apps have received along with the way criminals cover their tracks.

One app, called Super Skibydi Killer, has amassed over one million downloads whilst another, called Agent Shooter, managed to get itself installed on around 500,000 devices.

Others use clever tricks to hide themselves on the devices meaning users often then forget they've ever been installed.

Along with that annoying adware scam, some of the applications in question have also been found to push users to dangerous investment scams along with sending others to dubious casino sites.

All of the applications were readily available on Google ’s Play Store although all have since been banned by the US technology giant.

Although that means they can no longer be downloaded, anyone who has already installed them will need to make sure things are removed to keep their devices safe.

Here are all of the apps discovered by Dr Webb and how many times they have been installed.

• Super Skibydi Killer – 1,000,000 downloads

• Agent Shooter – 500,000

• Rainbow Stretch – 50,000

• Rubber Punch 3D – 500,000

• Eternal Maze (Yana Pospyelova) – 50,000

• Jungle Jewels (Vaibhav Wable) – 10,000

• Stellar Secrets (Pepperstocks) – 10,000

• Fire Fruits (Sandr Sevill) – 10,000

• Cowboy's Frontier (Precipice Game Studios) – 10,000

The gift boxes include a pair of AirPods Max headphones, an Apple cap, and a selection of "sweet and spooky" snacks and drinks.

As shared by influencer Lamarr Wilson, the boxes also include an invite which reads:

It's almost Halloween and Apple has some treats in store for you.

On the evening of October 30th, we'll unveil something special and invite you to join the online watch party.

To make your viewing experience a bit more "spatial," we hope you'll enjoy immersive listening with AirPods Max, along with a few sweet and spooky snacks.

Hints suggest the event will be all about the Mac, and the company is expected to refresh several Macs in the lineup with new high-performance (or "Scary Fast") M3 chips, including the 24-inch iMac and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

That said, given the unusual late timing of the event at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, not to mention the confusion surrounding the Mac lineup right now, this is one of the more mysterious events Apple has promoted in recent years, so we could well be in for some surprises.

Apple plans to stream the October 30 event live on its website, on YouTube, and through the Apple TV app. For those unable to watch, MacRumors will be providing full event coverage on MacRumors.com and the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

Call Of Duty celebrates its 20th anniversary - and some gamers say they still play nothing else - Sky News

It may come as a shock to many gamers, but Call Of Duty is 20 years old.

It's a franchise that has entertained hundreds of millions of players, and generated billions of dollars for its developers and publishers.

Since it first appeared as a PC game in 2003, it's been called many things - not all of them complimentary.

But there's no doubt that gamers around the world love the franchise which transports the player from the Second World War to the future, via real and imaginary conflicts ranging from Vietnam to the Cold War. In fact they love it so much that Call Of Duty is often cited as the most valuable game in history.

In a world where games releases regularly challenge Hollywood blockbusters and the biggest music releases for profitability, Call Of Duty can say it was there at the start. And it is still posting phenomenal numbers.

Since it first appeared there have been 20 different Call Of Duty titles from various teams making spin-off releases under the Modern Warfare, Advanced Warfare, Black Ops, Ghost, and Vanguard titles. Diversity which has meant gamers can pretty much expect a new COD game every year.

In total, it's made an estimated $30bn with publisher Activision saying the game has generated $3bn in the past 12 months alone.

More from Science & Tech

That's possible because there are roughly 250 million gamers who play Call Of Duty, and of those, a million or so say they play nothing else.

Piers Harding-Rolls, research director at Ampere Analysis, says: "It is obviously up there with some of the biggest intellectual properties within the game space. I think lifetime revenue from the series of games is over $30bn. You compare that with any other entertainment property, and it's out there with some of the biggest.

"It doesn't seem to have the kind of knock-on merchandising opportunity that some of the biggest entertainment franchises have, but it does. It's huge. And in the context of gaming."

Jon, known online as Mr Dalek JD, makes a living from playing the game online. A streamer and content creator with over 2.5 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, he thinks the game has become a cultural phenomenon.

It has achieved that status despite, or perhaps because of, its ability to court controversy.

"There was one Call Of Duty game in 2009 that had a mission called 'No Russian', which is now a pop culture phenomenon. If you say those words, most people my age will know what you're talking about," he says.

"It was a mission where you played as terrorists going into an airport. And at that time, I don't think any video game had ever really gone that far. And even nowadays I don't think video games would ever go there again, because that was a real, disturbing, cool, sort of shocking level."

Shocks and all, the financial success of the franchise put it at the centre of a controversial $69bn buyout by one of the worlds largest software companies, Microsoft. A deal that was eventually given the go ahead by competition regulators earlier this month, despite objections by rivals like Sony.

The UK's regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority, said it gave the go-ahead to after the restructured deal substantially addressed its earlier concerns that the US computing giant would gain too much control of the new cloud gaming market. Eventually changes were made to the deal to get it over the line.

Imre Jele is co-founder of Bossa Studios and a creative director for video games. He understands why there were concerns about Microsoft becoming dominant in the games market, but says criticism from other huge corporations about the deal is more than a little ironic.

"You know, Sony has been playing this game about exclusives for a very long time," he says.

"I think no one can morally now attack Microsoft for doing the exact same thing. It's just business. And I applaud the success, right? I mean, this is a huge success for everyone involved.

"That said, as a creative and just looking at any industry, I am worried about any industry being taken over by these huge companies and dictating every aspect of that."

Some would argue that games like this glorify violence, and promote war. Others might say, it's just a game.

Whatever the moral stance may be, there's no denying that Call Of Duty has revolutionised software development, online gameplay, immersion and interaction. And while doing that, has entertained millions of gamers, and made its developers and publishers huge amounts of money.

Le Mans-winning Ferrari 499P spawns £4.6m track car - Autocar

Ferrari has made its Le Mans-winning 499P prototype racer available for purchase as a no-holds-barred track toy, costing £4.6m and equipped with an 777bhp hybrid V6.

Based on the 499P endurance racer that claimed victory at La Sarthe this year (Ferrari’s first top-flight endurance outing in 50 years), the "strictly limited" track car is reserved for non-competitive use by "gentleman drivers".

Speaking at its Mugello debut, the firm's non-homologated vehicle leader Manuela Cecconi said it has been designed "for customers to enjoy the thrill of a racing prototype", adding that it is "the firm's most exclusive project", with each car costing €5.1m (£4,620,600), excluding VAT.

It has been designed for a "very select clientele", each of whom will have access to the car for two years and will be able to take part in nine racing events organised by Ferrari each year. If the customer wants to use a specific racetrack at his or her own request, an additional fee will be charged. The customer also gets access to the firm's F1 maintenance team.

Ferrari 499P Modificata

The car spearheads the brand's new Sport Prototipi Clienti programme, which will see customers able to purchase modified versions of Ferrari’s race cars, though the firm did not comment on what subsequent Prototipi Clienti cars will be.

Power comes from the same mid-rear mounted 3.0-litre hybridised V6 as the 499P, but the 499P Modificata's engine has been "pushed further" to produce a combined 697bhp. An additional 80bhp is on offer for seven seconds at a time, after the driver presses a red "push to pass" button mounted behind the steering wheel.

The race car is limited by Balance of Performance regulations to a total output of 670bhp.

A Formula 1-derived 800V electric motor drives the front wheels, and can be charged under deceleration and braking.

Ferrari 499P Modificata

The firm remains tight-lipped on its 0-62mph time and top speed, but Ferrari racing driver Antonio Fuoco achieved 213mph during testing of the 499P racer, and it is expected that the more powerful 499P Modificata will at least match this figure.

Ferrari said it was a "huge challenge" to engineer the powertrain so that the 499 Modificata’s on-track behaviour is accessible to customers with less experience. The engine mapping is said to have been tuned to easily manage torque, even at the car's limit.

While the firm did not comment on torque output, it has revealed that the electric motor produces 132lb ft, and in the 296 GT3, the V6 produces 525lb ft, meaning the two together could produce as much around 660lb ft in the Modificata.

During the development of its bespoke Pirelli tyres, Cecconi said the firm prioritised "vehicle dynamics and powertrain delivery management", meaning they are designed to withstand long, continuous runs with a bespoke tread pattern and are easier to manage during warm-up.

Ferrari 499P Modificata

Not being homologated, its output is not restricted by Balance of Performance constraints, which allowed Ferrari to make the car "more accessible" for less experienced drivers, chiefly through aerodynamics.

The firm's ambassador driver Olivier Beretta commented on how "surprised" he was at how well the car performed "despite how far (the firm) pushed it."

Designed by Flavio Manzoni, renowned for sketching the F12 Berlinetta and Monza SP1, it relies heavily on ducts, channels and vents to smooth airflow over its cab-back body.

At the front, thin headlamps sit above a carbonfibre front splitter, with a flat bonnet and single windscreen wiper that sits on top of a curved windscreen.

Meanwhile, it gets a bumper-width light bar at the back, as well as a large downforce-inducing rear spoiler, carbonfibre bumpers that leaves the wheels and suspension exposed to the elements, and an air intake (also carbonfibre) that extends the length of the rear glasshouse. This cools both the V6 engine and the battery.

Ferrari 499P Modificata

Its body sits on a carbonfibre monocoque chassis and F1-inspired push-rod suspension, which, according to Ferrari, has been "designed to maximise driving thrills and ensure that the car behaves predictably in all conditions."

The engine itself is load-bearing, forming a part of the car's backbone and increasing its torsional rigidity.

Inside, it gets quite a bare interior for weight purposes, but does feature a digital rear camera, fixed bucket seats, an adjustable pedal rack, and a racing steering wheel.
