Star Wars game cancelled as EA cuts 670 jobs - BBC

A man holding a lightsaberEA

Electronic Arts (EA) is cancelling an upcoming Star Wars game and will lay off 5% of its employees globally- approximately 670 people.

The game, which was in early development, would have been a first-person shooter set in the Star Wars universe.

The firm said the "streamlining" would "deliver deeper, more connected experiences for fans".

It is the latest example of the job cuts sweeping the gaming industry.

"With it being an extremely difficult time to obtain funding to start a new game studio, and thousands being laid off by the month, video games run a significant risk of losing top talent outside of the industry and being impacted for years," said Rich Barham, a former executive at gaming studio, Blizzard.

EA announced in December 2023 it would be laying off staff at UK developer Codemasters, known for racing games F1 23 and EA Sports WRC.

In a letter to staff, boss Andrew Wilson said the company had begun contacting affected employees, with the redundancies anticipated to be completed by summer.

He also explained the decision to develop fewer new titles.

"We are also sunsetting games and moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry," he wrote.

"This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities — including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities — to deliver the entertainment players want today and tomorrow."

In a subsequent email to staff, EA entertainment boss Laura Miele said this meant cancelling the upcoming Star Wars title being worked on by subsidiary Respawn Entertainment. It was responsible for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which had "generally favourable" reviews according to aggregator Metacritic.

"As we've looked at Respawn's portfolio over the last few months, what's clear is the games our players are most excited about are Jedi and Respawn's rich library of owned brands," she said.

"It's always hard to walk away from a project, and this decision is not a reflection of the team's talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game."

Yet more lay-offs

This is the latest round of cuts to hit the gaming industry, which in January saw Microsoft reveal plans to lay off 1,900 people in its gaming division, including some at recently-acquired Activision-Blizzard.

And it comes just two days after Sony announced plans to axe 900 staff, as well as close its well known London Studio.

"The impact of mass layoffs resonates deeply within the gaming community, particularly for the talented individuals affected," said Sarah Stevens, head of gaming HR firm e-volveHR.

"Above all, humanity and kindness are the most important ingredients for those navigating these choppy waters."

Karol Severin, senior analyst at Midia Research, said the latest cuts showed how competition was getting more intense in the gaming industry.

"This is not to say that the industry is in trouble, it is just entering a new, more mature, chapter of its life - a chapter, where efficiency, profitability and competitive capabilities are the name of the game.

"The games industry is still a $223bn (£176bn) industry, and will grow by approximately another $78bn by 2030", he said.

"For context, that's more than the current size of the whole global recorded music industry."

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket devs say it won’t have NFTs - Polygon

The Pokémon Company revealed a new virtual card collecting game called Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket on Tuesday. After the reveal, fans online expressed concern that the game would contain non fungible tokens (NFTs). However, it now looks like NFTs won’t play any part in the new game. In a statement issued to Polygon, a representative of the Pokémon Company said it has “not developed or approved” any Pokémon NFTs.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is a new game from the Pokémon Company, Creatures Inc., and DeNA, the developers of Pokémon Masters EX. We only got a first trailer on Monday, but it’s already clear the game will heavily emphasize digital card collecting. Because of this, fans wondered if these digital card collectibles could be sold as NFTs. One person called the new game an “NFT scam” and another said that the developers made “Pokémon NFTs in 2024.”

Polygon reached out to the Pokémon Company to seek clarification of the development team’s plans. In response, a representative told Polygon that the company “has not developed or approved of Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) related to the Pokémon brand and associated intellectual property” and that any NFTs being sold with Pokémon’s intellectual property “are unofficial and in no way affiliated with The Pokémon Company International or the Pokémon brand.”

You can read the full statement below:

The Pokémon Company International has not developed or approved of Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) related to the Pokémon brand and associated intellectual property. Fans should be aware that any NFTs in the marketplace featuring Pokémon intellectual property are unofficial and in no way affiliated with The Pokémon Company International or the Pokémon brand.

The idea of NFTs in a Pokémon game is an odd one. Sure, plenty of game companies have tried to find ways to incorporate NFTs into games and invested in the technology, but overall NFTs in games have been a bust. Fans of video games have rejected NFTs, and the broader crypto market that propped up NFTs also crashed. On top of all of that, NFTs’ need for blockchain technology would provide logistical challenges to development and seems like a mismatched fit for a family-friendly brand like Pokémon.

Also, in the end, it’s just unnecessary. Video game developers don’t need NFTs to create valuable and limited virtual items — just look at how much people will spend on cosmetics in any live-service game. The developers have not revealed many details of the monetization model for this game, but we know that Pocket will be a free-to-play game and players can open “two booster packs every day at no cost,” the release said.

My personal guess is that Pocket will have in-game purchases where people can buy more packs of cards to try and get a coveted card, just like fans do IRL. And just like in real life, people might be willing to spend exorbitant amounts to get the sparkling cards of their favorite Pokémon.

Helldivers 2 Community Mourns the Loss of 'Space Vietnam' Map Malevelon Creek — but the Fightback Has Already Begun - IGN

The Helldivers 2 community was left in tatters after fan-favorite planet Malevelon Creek, dubbed ‘Space Vietnam’ by players, finally fell to the Automatons.

The community reacted in horror overnight as they discovered Malevelon Creek with the dreaded ‘0% Liberated’ flag, and, even more devastating, a ‘Planet Lost’ retreat order. This made the planet inaccessible, and players have even reported getting booted from its surface mid-mission.

Malevelon Creek is widely thought of as Helldivers 2’s best planet. It sees players go up against Automatons — Terminator-style killer robots - in an atmospheric environment clearly inspired by iconic imagery from Vietnam war movies. Its eternally twilight forest biome is creepy, awe-inspiring, and, if you’re doing well, more than a little heroic.

But overnight, Malevelon Creek fell in a surprise twist in the ongoing meta narrative that makes up Helldivers 2’s Galactic War. Here, Super Earth and the alien enemy wrestle for control over entire sectors of the galaxy as players battle to complete operations (sets of missions) and positively contribute to each planet’s liberation status.

Here's a snippet of the reaction to the fall of Malevelon Creek:

However, as of this morning, the fightback has begun. IGN has verified a tiny percentage pushback on Malevelon Creek as players work to wrestle control away from the Automatons. Malevelon Creek is playable once again.

The fightback has begun.
The fightback has begun.

Helldivers 2’s galactic war is a single, ongoing meta narrative fans have had fun role-playing with since the game's explosive launch. Currently there are no meaningful rewards directly tied to the liberation of sectors (all players get 12,500 Requisition if eight defend campaigns are won against the Automatons, but that's not much of an incentive), so it’s all just a bit of fun. And it’s not entirely clear that players truly control this narrative through their actions, with developer Arrowhead ultimately pulling the strings as the live-service develops. Still, perhaps more than any previously lost planet, the fall of Malevelon Creek really hurt.

Now Arrowhead appears to have sorted out Helldivers 2’s server issues, it has time to return to its original post-launch plan, so hopefully we’ll get an idea of what to expect in terms of new content soon. If you’re playing, be sure to check out IGN’s comprehensive Helldivers 2 guide.

Sony Lays Off 900 PlayStation Employees, Closes London Studio & Cancels Projects - Nintendo Life

PlayStation Jim Ryan
Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan / PlayStation

The video game industry layoffs continue with Sony's gaming division PlayStation this week announcing it would be axing "about 8% or about 900 people" across its workforce as part of an organisational restructure.

This impacts employees "across all SIE regions" and several PlayStation studios. In the UK, PlayStation's London studio is shutting down and there will be staff reductions at Firesprite studio. Staff cuts have also impacted Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games and Guerrilla Games, and some unannounced projects have been cancelled.

SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan: "Ensuring our organization is future ready in this rapidly changing industry, we have concluded that tough decisions have become inevitable...It has become clear changes need to be made to continue to grow the business and develop the company. We had to step back, look at our business holistically, and move forward focusing on the long-term sustainability of the company and delivering the best experiences possible for our community. The goal is to streamline our resources to ensure our continued success and ability to deliver experiences gamers and creators have come to expect from us."

In related news, Deck Nine Games (one of the developers behind the Life is Strange games) has announced it is laying off 20% of its staff, after being affected by the game industry's "worsening marketing conditions".

Deck Nine Games: "These people are amazing, talented, and awesome developers. They have made a huge impact during their time at Deck Nine Games and we did not take this decision lightly. Please hire these people if you can, they're amazing."

Supermassive Games (The Dark Pictures Anthology, Little Nightmares III) also released a statement yesterday announcing a reorganisation.

These latest layoffs follow companies like Microsoft, Riot Games, and Embracer Group letting go of staff in recent months as part of company restructures. You can check out our sibling site Push Square to learn more about everything going on with PlayStation right now.

Samsung confirms Galaxy Ring battery life ahead of launch - 9to5Google

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is quickly on its way and new information keeps coming, including an official estimate on battery life.

Speaking to FNNews, Samsung has confirmed that the battery life of the Galaxy Ring will fall somewhere in-between five and nine days. That estimate puts Samsung’s ring in pretty good company, potentially beating the 4-6 day estimate of rings from UltraHuman and RingConn, while also potentially beating out the one-week estimate of the Oura ring.

This extended battery life falls in line with Samsung’s pretty obvious vision for this product, which is to have a health-tracking device that largely fades into the background.

Beyond that, though, Samsung also confirmed to The Elec that the Galaxy Ring will see its release in the second half of this year. That comes as no surprise, as previous reports have pointed at July 2024 for the launch, but it’s nice to have further confirmation nonetheless.

Yesterday, we had a chance to take a first look at the Galaxy Ring at MWC 2024 to check out its charging method, colors, and various sizes.

Android's February feature drop adds 9 new nifty features - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Just in time for this year's MWC, Google is seeding new Android updates that could potentially make your life a bit easier. Most of the features leverage AI, while others are just enhanced functionalities of existing features.

If you are on the road and someone messages you, you can let the AI-powered assistant summarize your incoming messages, even if they are from a group chat, and then offer contextual replies or actions. For instance, you can make a quick call with just one tap or simply send your route and ETA.

The AI can also describe an online image, photos or a picture embedded in a message for people with visual disabilities.

The Lens feature in apps becomes more powerful now as you can point your phone at your surroundings, and the TalkBack function will read out loud relevant information - opening hours, reviews, ratings, contacts, etc.

Another AI-powered function is the ability to chat with Gemini right in the default Android Messages app. You can carry out a full conversation with Google's AI chatbot right from Messages.

The mobile version of Google Docs gets a markup option so you can highlight important text and attach notes to it.

Spotify gets native casting controls right from the notification shade, just like YouTube Music. You can easily switch between your devices and control their volume on the fly. It's the same as Spotify Connect, but you don't have to open the app to switch anymore.

The Fitbit app gets deeper integration with other health data sources so you can view all your health-related stats from MyFitnesspal, AllTrails, Oura Ring, etc., all in one place.

Wear OS also gets some love this month. The dedicated Wallet app now supports boarding passes, membership and loyalty cards, event tickets, etc. It's now a full-fledged Wallet app like the Android version. And last but not least, Wear OS Google Maps version now supports public transit directions so you will know when to get off the bus, tram, train, etc., and it will guide you to your next destination.

Samsung unveils the Galaxy Ring as a way to 'simplify everyday wellness' - Engadget

After teasing it (again) yesterday, Samsung has finally shown off the Galaxy Ring in physical form at Mobile World Conference (MWC 2024) and revealed some additional details. The device is of course centered around health and wellness and will come in three colors, platinum silver, gold and ceramic black. It's set to go on sale later this year.

Samsung didn't say much about the Galaxy Ring when it first displayed a render of the device at Unpacked last month. All we knew at the time was that it would be a wellness-oriented wearable positioned to rival Oura and that it would have a suite of unknown sensors.

Journalists weren't allowed to photograph it today, but some additional images from Samsung show it to be a chonky, concave ring about the same size as the Oura, according to a supplied image (below). The extra girth isn't surprising, given the electronics cached inside.

Still, The Verge noted that it was lighter than expected and will be offered in sizes 5 to 13, marked S through XL inside the band. The size of the battery (and thus time between charges) will vary depending on the size, ranging from 14.5mAh to 21.5mAh. Battery life is unknown, but the Oura can go up to seven days between charges.

Samsung

According to a blog from Samsung VP Dr. Hon Pak, the ring will track sleep based on heart rate, movement and breathing, then provide users advice based on that. The company will also glean data from partner Natural Cycles, which already does fertility tracking on the Galaxy Watch, matching a key Oura feature.

The Galaxy Ring will also offer a new tool called My Vitality Score that measures alertness so users can see if they're at their best. Feedback will be available via "Booster Cards" that offer science-based tips using sleep and other data gathered by the device.

The Galaxy Ring will be part of the Samsung Health ecosystem and be compatible with the Galaxy Watch. That means you'll be able to use both devices at once to track your health and get higher quality data as a result. That said, the advantage of a ring wearable is that it's far less annoying to sleep with it.

We'll learn more in the months ahead, including the exact sensor suite, pricing and sale date. The Galaxy Ring will only be compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones, though the company is planning to make it work with other Android devices later on. iOS compatible is still to be determined, though, Pak said.

Honor unveils MagicBook Pro 16 with Core Ultra 7 155H processor, NVIDIA 4060 graphics - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Honor just unveiled its most powerful laptop to date. The MagicBook Pro 16 packs an Intel Core Ultra 7 155G processor, an 8-gig NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU, 1 TB of storage, and 32 GB of RAM.

The metal body laptop comes in a cool rainbow-like white color that Honor says uses 3D Coloring Spray Technology to achieve the effect.

The MagicBook Pro 16 has a full-sized keyboard with a Numpad at the right side. Below is a massive glass trackpad, and flanking the keyboard are two speaker grilles. The laptop has a total of six speakers and Honor says it supports Spatial Audio. There are 2 microphones on board.

Users can authenticate with Windows Hello courtesy of a fingerprint reader inside the power button and an infrared camera in the bezel above the display.

Upfront is a 16-inch FullView display with a 3072x1920px resolution, 500 nits of brightness, 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 and sRGB gamuts, as well as HDR support. The screen is surrounded by 3mm bezels and commands a 93% screen-to-body ratio.

Ticking inside is Intel's Core Ultra 7 155H - the latest from Intel's revamped Meteor Lake chips. It has 16 physical cores with 6 performance, 8 efficiency, and 2 new low-power efficiency cores, 22 threads, and 2x Intel Gen3 Neural Compute Engines. That last bit is key - all of Intel's new CPUs sport a neural processing unit (NPU) for AI-accelerated CPU and GPU tasks - background blur, eye tracking, generative fill, etc.

The NVIDIA RTX 4060 discrete GPU has 8GB of memory and comfortably beats Intel's built-in Xe GPU for games and content creation.

The MagicBook Pro 16 has a 75Wh battery, which Honor says achieves 10 hours in PCMark 10's battery test. The laptop weighs 1.86kg, which isn't bad considering the amount of hardware inside and its size.

Is your Gmail account about to be closed? Google issues update on worrying rumours - Express

Millions of users have suddenly begun seeing a concerning message online warning them that their email accounts will soon be shut down for good. The post, which has been circulating on X (formerly Twitter), suggests that will 'sunset' Gmail in August 2024 and leave millions without access. The thought of losing messages and contacts along with being forced to change to a new email provider has clearly angered plenty of people with one named Daniel posting a message on X saying,"This insane, I hate this company."

Here's the post - which features Google's logo and official font - in full.

"We are reaching out to share an important update about Gmail," the message read.

"After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close.“As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service. This means that as of this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails."

If you're thinking that Gmail closing down sounds very farfetched you'd be right. It appears the post that's gone viral on Twitter is just part of an elaborate hoax that's actually an adapted message Google sent out when it closed down it Gmail Basic platform.

In response to the worries, Google has simply replied, "Gmail is here to stay." That means you don't need to worry about your emails and your account is not going anywhere. The only way you might lose access is if you don't use things enough with

That means those who don't log in within two years could find their accounts are closed - Google will send plenty of reminders before this happens though.

"If a Google Account has not been used or signed into for at least 2 years, we may delete the account and its contents – including content within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar), YouTube and Google Photos," Google's Ruth Kricheli confirmed.

The latest hoax is a good time to think twice before believing things you see on social media. Fake news can go viral fast and leave you worrying about something that may never happen.

MWC 2024: all the phones, wearables, and gadgets announced in Barcelona - The Verge

It’s that time of year again. Mobile World Congress is returning to Barcelona, where it’ll fill the halls of the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via convention center from February 26th to February 29th.

The trade show bills itself as “the largest and most influential event for the connectivity ecosystem” with tens of thousands of attendees from manufacturers, mobile operators, and other companies.

From a consumer tech perspective, in practice, this means smartphone and other mobile device launches. Expect Chinese giants like Xiaomi and Honor to use the show as a venue to bring their domestic phones to a global audience, while others like OnePlus and HMD could have all-new devices to show off. And we wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few flashy concept devices shown off for good measure, even if many will be destined to stay in the lab.

Read on for all the biggest news coming out of the show, and be sure to check back, as we’ll be updating this page regularly throughout the course of the week.

Without looking up any leaks or rumors, I’d bet that you could probably sketch most of the phones rumored to be launching at Mobile World Congress next week. Over the years, smartphones have settled on a relatively consistent design formula of big rectangular touchscreens, small selfie camera cutouts, app-based interfaces, and large camera bumps with an array of different lenses. But more than a decade and a half into the smartphone era, I’m getting more and more curious about what’s going to come next and why existing attempts to reinvent smartphones like foldables have struggled to go mainstream.

To my mind, much of the answer comes back to apps. We barely think about them because it’s so easy to take for granted that all your third-party software will work on your next phone, but you’d never consider buying a device that can’t run your banking app or ridehailing service of choice. Just look at Huawei, which went from challenging Apple to be the world’s second-biggest smartphone manufacturer to getting its Android license revoked and dropping out of the top five altogether. First-party apps are the foundation of a smartphone, but it’s the third-party software that makes it feel like your personal tool.

Xiaomi’s phone lineup has a new leader. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra has just launched in China and features a range of impressive photography specs including a main camera with a large one-inch-type sensor (specifically the Sony LYT-900) and a variable aperture with 1,024 stops between f/1.63 and f/4.0. Prices start at ¥6,499 (around $904) for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, rising to ¥7,799 (around $1,084) for 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage when the phone goes on sale on February 27th. There’s also a special-edition titanium model that’ll retail for ¥8,799 (around $1,224).

Although Xiaomi only shared Chinese release details of the 14 Ultra today, it won’t be long before the phone’s international launch. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has said that the phone will make an appearance at the company’s presentation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday, where it’ll appear alongside the Xiaomi 14 that launched in China last October. Expect the handsets to be made available in Europe but not in an official capacity in the US.

Is Google Closing Gmail Service Down On August 1? - Forbes

An email message seemingly from Google stating that the Gmail service will be closing down on August 1 has gone viral.

The realistic-looking email message was posted to X (formerly known as Twitter) and had the headline “Google is sunsetting Gmail.” Addressed to Gmail users, the apparently real statement served to inform all 2 billion account holders that “Gmail is coming to a close” as of August 1 and from this date it will no longer support “sending, receiving or storing emails.”

“Up until August 1, 2024” the email read “you will be able to access and download all of your emails.”

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, lots of people took this very seriously indeed. Not least as there have been genuine stories over the last few months concerning Google deleting old Gmail accounts and new rules to reject certain messages sent by bulk senders to Gmail accounts.

Add to this the fact that Google does have some history when it comes to closing down services that many people find useful - remember Google Stadia, to name but one - the email sent shockwaves across X.

However, eagle-eyed readers would spot soon enough that the posting on X had been flagged as manipulated media. The manipulated media policy states that posts containing media that has been “significantly and deceptively altered, manipulated, or fabricated” are prohibited. It would appear that the statement being circulated had, indeed, been so altered. It was actually a modified copy of a Google statement regarding getting rid of the basic HTML view in Gmail messages.

Although some can think of such posts as just a bit of fun, such disinformation can cause unwanted anxiety to service users. Google itself responded by posting to X with a message that said: “Gmail is here to stay.”

I have reached out to Google for a startement and will update this article if one is forthcoming.
