WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #17, available now from Marvel.
The latest threat to the Marvel Universe has just arrived in the form of a planet-sized Dormammu, and in Guardians of the Galaxy #17 (by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC's Cory Petit) things have just gotten worse. While the Guardians express different opinions on how to best deal with the situation, the Dormammy-possessed Ego, the Living Planet has just gone through yet another transformation by way of a power boost that makes an already terrifying threat even more deadly.
After some lengthy debate about how to handle the onslaught of Mindless Ones overrunning the galaxy, the Guardians finally settle on splitting up with Gamora and Nova leading the charge to a distant world. When they arrive to offer assistance, the two heroes discover that their teammates Quasar, the Super-Skrull, and Mantis are already engaged in combat with Dormammu's army.
Nova speaks to Quasar, who confirms that Galactus once imbued Ego with a portion of his power. As Wendell tells it, this "Galactus Boost" resulted in Ego sprouting a massive body to match his literally planet-sized head. Quasar believes that the power boost has since dissipated and that Ego is no longer able to sprout a body. Unfortunately, he is soon proven very wrong, to the chagrin of his teammate.
Galactus has a long history of imparting the Power Cosmic upon his various heralds like the Silver Surfer, but even that pales in comparison to the Galactus Boost. When the Devourer of Worlds was transformed into the Lifebringer, he reached out to Ego in hopes of putting aside their former differences.
Once an alliance had been reached between them, Galactus imparted enough of his power to Ego that the Living Planet sprouted an appropriately sized humanoid body. This gave Ego the edge he needed to stand with the Eternity Watch and a bevy of other heroes against the might of the First Firmament in 2017's Ultimates 2 #100 (by Al Ewing, Travel Foreman, Filipe Andrade, and Marco Lorenzana).
Following Eternity's rescue and the First Firmament's defeat, Ego detached himself from his new body, although it looks like the power to grow a humanoid form never left the Living Planet. As Nova has just discovered, Dormammu has tapped into whatever was left of the Galactus Boost within his new host, and with it, he has literally made himself into an even bigger threat.
All that Nova can do is stare at the impossibly huge threat that now looms before him. With each world that falls under the control of the Dormammu/Ego hybrid, his power only seems to increase.
This new development also further informs how badly the Guardians are outmatched against the supernatural. Even the mystical knowledge of Doctor Doom has proven to be ineffectual against the power of Dormammu, who has proven to be capable of regularly taking on Doctor Strange. With the power of the Galactus boost granting this colossal threat with even more power, there may be little that even the Guardians of the Galaxy can do to stop "The Last Annihilation."
