Google unveils its Pixel 5 for just $699, along with a new Nest Audio speaker and Chromecast - Daily Mail

Google unveils its Pixel 5 smartphone with 5G support for just $699, along with a new Nest Audio speaker and Chromecast during its online 'Launch Night In' event

  • Google revealed its new Pixel 5 smartphone during a live event Wednesday
  • The Pixel 5 starts at $699 and claims to be a high-end device
  • The phone supports 5G, is water resistant and offers 48 hours of battery life
  • The firm also introduced a budget version, Pixel 4a 5G, for just $499
  • This version has less power, a smaller battery and less of a premium design
  • The event saw a new $99 speaker and a streaming service called 'Google TV'

Google released its next generation Pixel smartphone that is an affordable 'high end' device that takes aim at Apple’s iPhone.

The firm held its 'Launch Night In' online where it unveiled the Pixel 5 that starts at $699, along with a budget version, Pixel 4a 5G, for $499 – both are at least half the price of the Cupertino company’s handsets.

With the reduced price comes some sacrifices, the Pixel 5 has a less powerful processor and display than competing devices.

However, the firm notes both devices are water resistant, include reverse wireless charging, support 5G networks and have a longer battery life.

Along with the smartphones, the event also introduced a $100 Nest Audio speaker, a new Chromcast and the firm’s new streaming service, ‘Google TV.’

Google released the first generation Pixel smartphones in 2016 that were deemed to have the camera of any other handset on the market.

However, it seems that the tech giant has struggled to make a big splash into the market, but the new affordable 'high-end' model- may be the stepping stone it needs.

The Pixel 5G and Pixel 4a 5G are designed with a new ultrawide lens, along with the standard rear camera.

Both also come with Cinematic Pan that Google says ‘gives your videos a professional look with ultrasmooth panning that’s inspired by the equipment Hollywood directors use.’

One thing these smartphones can do that Apple’s and Samsung’s devices can’t is wait on the line when you call a toll-free number and are put on hold.

‘Built on the smarts of Duplex and Call Screen, this new feature lets you go back to enjoying the things that matter to you, and Google Assistant will notify you once someone is on the line and ready to talk,’ Google shared in a statement.

‘And Hold for Me works on your device, so the entire call is private to you. Goodbye endless hold music, hello more free time.’

Someone in the UK unboxed a Google Pixel 5 retail demo unit [Video] - 9to5Google

Google Pixel 5 review units probably aren’t shipping out to tech publications for a week or two and the phone itself isn’t landing in customers hands until the end of October, but someone in the UK managed to get their hands on a Pixel 5 retail demo unit somehow and posted a video of it to YouTube today…

There’s not exactly anything new to learn in the video, but it is our first look at the phone, its retail box, and all of its accompanying accessories in the flesh.

We had full coverage of the Pixel 5 after its announcement during the Launch Night In event earlier today. As Google confirmed, the phone has a 6-inch display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage space, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip, a 4080 mAh battery, an ultrawide camera, and a handful of new software features.

One minor tidbit that this video confirms for the first time is that the box does include the USB-A to USB-C adapter for switching from another phone to the Pixel.

Warning: The video has atrocious music that plays way too loud.

Thanks for the heads up Piet!

Google Pixel phone 'designed for economic downturn' - BBC News

By Leo Kelion
Technology desk editor

Google's hardware chief has said its new flagship smartphone was designed to go on sale during an economic downturn.

As a result, the Pixel 5 has abandoned some of its predecessor's headline features and runs on a slower chip in order to be sold at a lower price.

However, it does gain 5G connectivity and some new photography capabilities.

Experts say it will face tough competition from other mid-range Android handsets, but the included bundle of Google services could help.

"To not bring to market a true flagship demonstrates Google is now thinking about the market in a very different way than it was last year," commented Ben Stanton from the tech consultancy Canalys.

"And on a price-specs basis alone, Google will probably lose to Samsung and Chinese competitors.

"Its key selling point, however, remains that it offers a stock Android experience with superfast updates."

This is a reference to the fact that many other Android device-makers layer their own proprietary user interfaces on top of Google's operating system, and typically take longer to offer software updates.

The Pixel 5 will cost $699/£599, and has a 6in (15.2cm) display and 128 gigabytes of storage. That compares to the $999/£929 price of last year's top-end 6.3in Pixel 4XL.

Google also unveiled a 5G-enabled version of its existing Pixel 4a, which will cost £499.

Age of coronavirus

Smartphone designs are typically locked in place many months before the products go on sale, in order to secure the required components and carry out tests.

Google's senior vice president of devices and services acknowledged that the Pixel 5's features had been decided upon before the coronavirus pandemic began.

But he said a deliberate choice had been taken to offer a 5G-capable phone at "an affordable price".

"What the world doesn't seem like it needs right now is another $1,000 phone," said Rick Osterloh.

"Obviously nobody anticipated the pandemic, but we actually did think that the world was possibly headed for an economic downturn... and it only further emphasised our point of view that this is the right thing."

Tech jettisoned from the Pixel 4 includes the Soli radar chip, which Google had taken five years to develop. It automatically turned on the older phone's screen when its owner approached and allowed gesture controls.

Last year's face-unlock sensors have also been ditched, with a return to the Pixel 3's fingerprint sensor on the back of the Pixel 5.

"These technologies will be used in the future, but they're very expensive," Mr Osterloh said.

The Pixel 5's Snapdragon 765G chip is also rated as being slower and having lower graphics-processing performance than last year's Snapdragon 855, although Mr Osterloh said he did not believe consumers would notice.

The device does benefit from some improvements, including being able to produce a shallow-focus effect in "super low-light conditions".

One of its rear cameras now has a wider angle lens than before. And there are a choice of new video stabilisation modes.

In addition, the RAM memory has been boosted to 8GB, which should help the phone switch from task-to-task more quickly.

And Google is bundling some of its subscription services including three months of its games-streaming platform Stadia and 100 gigabytes of online storage.

"Bundling three months of Stadia Pro cloud gaming with 5G Pixel phones is smart, because gamers benefit in particular from the 5G experience," commented Ian Fogg from OpenSignal.

"But cloud gaming is still 'early' tech for mobile."

Stadia

The Pixel 5's competition will include Samsung's Galaxy S20FE and the forthcoming OnePlus 8T - which are also being targeted at the "mid-market".

Google shipped 4.6 million Pixel smartphones over the 12 months leading up to July 2020, according to research firm IDC.

That marked a 37% drop over the same period a year earlier. However, a wider fall in demand for smartphones meant the brand still rose from being ranked 16th to 12th in terms of market share for the final quarter of each period.

Google TV

Other products unveiled at Google's virtual event included Nest Audio - a redesigned version of its Google Home smart speaker, which now promises more bass and louder volumes.

Google is the second best-selling smart speaker brand in Western markets. But it is still forecast to sell about a third of the number of Amazon's Echo speakers in the UK this year, according to research firm eMarketer.

Google also showed off a new version of its television-streaming dongle, which is now called Chromecast with Google TV.

Unlike its predecessors, the device comes with its own remote control, which allows users to control their TV and soundbar via its buttons or voice commands as an alternative to using a smartphone app.

It also brings together movies and TV shows from the various apps each user subscribes to in order to make its own recommendations. The Apple TV set-top box and Amazon's latest Fire TV stick both offer similar functions.

Coronavirus: Some users of NHS tracing app incorrectly given COVID-19 exposure alerts - Sky News

Some users of the new NHS contact-tracing app have received notifications saying they'd been near someone with coronavirus, only to discover the alerts were system checks sent by Google and Apple.

People who downloaded the COVID-19 app in England and Wales told Sky News they had received a notification which said: "Someone you were near reported having COVID-19."

Yet, when they clicked on the message, they found no information explaining whether they should self-isolate.

Image: The correct NHS app message sent if you need to self-isolate

The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed it was a "default message" sent by Google and Apple - the makers of the app's technology - but it had already caused confusion, forcing at least one user into avoidable self-isolation.

"I'm now self-isolating, just to be on the safe side... I don't know whether it's correct or not," Maurice Leaver said. He received the message on Sunday, the day after downloading the app, and had been unable to clarify the situation with contact tracers.

Kathryn Sian, a biomedical scientist in an NHS lab, received the same notification, but went into work after reading about it online.

She said the "very stressful" message gave her "no confidence in this app at all", adding: "I've turned off the contact tracing for now, only using it to check in at venues."

More from Covid-19

Both Mr Leaver and Ms Sian described how the default messages "disappeared". Although clicking on it took them to the homepage of the app, there was no sign it had ever been sent.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson confirmed that default messages from Google and Apple would disappear or not be able to be clicked on. An official Test and Trace instruction to self-isolate would produce a message inside the app which said: "Please stay at home and self-isolate to keep yourself and others safe."

Image: The track and trace message sent if you test negative

Apple or Google notifications, the spokesperson said, could be called "COVID-19 EXPOSURE LOGGING" or "COVID-19 Exposure Notifications". It is not currently possible to turn off default messages.

Users who had received a disappearing notification criticised the lack of guidance available online and from the NHS 111 telephone hotline.

Jonny Easton said that when he called NHS 111 for more information after getting the alert, the call handler told him they'd never heard of the notification, but that they believed it should be ignored.

"One would have thought when the app was released one of the first things you would have done would be to conduct extensive training with the 111 members of staff, that told them, when you get this message you do this," he said.

"It has damaged confidence because it seems it hasn't really occurred in this situation."

It is not known if the same alerts have been sent in other countries with the app, nor how many have been sent, but dozens of people reported receiving them on social media.

One asked: "Have I been 'traced'?" Another said: "I got a notification that [someone] near me had tested positive... No information of it whatsoever in the app. What's the point?"

This confusion is the latest in a series of issues raised since the app launched. On the weekend, it was revealed that tests conducted in hospitals or NHS labs could not be put into the app, leaving nearly a third of tests unlogged.

Users also questioned why it was not possible to register negative test results on the app, as these might release someone from self-isolation.

The Department of Health and Social Care said it had fixed this issue by allowing users to ask for a code from NHS Test and Trace, and screenshots seen by Sky News show that it is now possible to add negative test results on the app using the same system.

But one user who had registered a negative test questioned whether the message on the app made it clear that people who have been given a negative test might still have to self-isolate: for instance, if other people in their household or bubble continued to have symptoms. This only became clear, the user said, after clicking on a link in the app.

Professor Lillian Edwards, who sat on the Ethics Board for the first app, which was discarded by the government in June, said the issues raised questions about the app's strategy.

"There was a choice to be made about putting out something very simple and very clear that gets it right the first time and therefore builds a lot of trust and confidence, or what the English app has gone for, which is putting in a lot of different functionalities," she told Sky News.

"I think that is causing confusion which may lead to loss of trust."

The issues come as the Westminster government revealed that the app had received 14 million downloads, or nearly 25% of the population of England and Wales.

Analysis by University of Oxford Professor Johannes Abeler comparing early adoption of contact-tracing apps in four different countries showed that the English and Welsh app was on track for record growth, with a larger proportion of the population downloading over its first weeks than in Scotland, Germany and Singapore.

Professor Abeler said: "The strong and widespread uptake of the app in England and Wales is very good news. This success is possibly due to people being asked about the app whenever they enter a pub or a restaurant. Prompting people about the app is likely to drive adoption. The extensive marketing campaign was surely also helpful."

Commenting on the confusion caused by the Google and Apple notifications, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: "NHS Covid-19 app users only need to self-isolate if they get a notification directly from the app advising them to do so."

Sky News has contacted Google, Apple and NHS England for comment.

Google's latest smart speaker is the $100 Nest Audio - Engadget

Google’s Nest Audio was all but revealed already when it appeared in a Walmart a week ago, but now it’s official. The company just announced its latest Google-powered speaker at its annual Pixel event. As you can tell from the pictures, the Nest Audio is a fabric-clad speaker similar to the Nest Mini.

According to Google, the new Nest Audio has a 19mm tweeter, a 75mm mid-woofer, all of which will result in “fuller, clearer, more natural sound.” It also apparently has 50 percent more bass and 75 percent more volume than its predecessor. You can pair two Nest Audio speakers together for stereo sound. Though not new to the Nest Audio (existing Google speakers can do the same), it also works for multi-room audio; you can say “Hey Google, move music to the kitchen speaker” to do just that.

Google says the Nest Audio is made out of 70 percent recycled plastic. It measures 4.89 inches wide and 6.89 inches tall and 3.07 inches thick. Four dots light up when it’s active, and you can tap the left side to decrease the volume. There’s a mic switch on the back to turn that off for additional privacy. It has three far-field microphones and a quad-core A53 1.8 GHz processor plus a high-performance ML hardware engine. According to Google, the Nest Audio also has a Media EQ feature that will automatically tune itself to whatever it is you’re listening to, be it music, podcasts or audiobooks. Ambient IQ will also automatically adjust the volume based on background noise.

The Nest Audio will be available for $100 starting on October 5th in the US, Canada and India. It’ll open up to retail stores and a total of 21 countries starting October 15th. It comes in a variety of colors: Charcoal, Chalk, Sage, Sand and Sky. You can pre-order it from Google’s website now.

Google Pixel 5 release date, price, news and features - TechRadar

The Google Pixel 5 is official, and we've learned all about the newest flagship phone from the maker of Android at the company's Launch Night In livestream event.

Google revealed the new Pixel 5 alongside the Google Pixel 4a 5G, Google Nest Audio and Chromecast with Google TV.

Below we'll run you through all the key details we know about the Google Pixel 5 so far, including how much it'll cost, what it looks like, and what specs you can expect for your money.

Cut to the chase

  • What is the Google Pixel 5? Google's latest flagship smartphone
  • When is it out? October 15
  • How much does it cost? $699 / £599 / AU$1,079

Google Pixel 5 release date and price

The Google Pixel 5 costs $699 / £599 / AU$1,079. Google has confirmed that the phone is coming to the US, UK and Australia, and you can pre-order it now directly from Google's web store.

The Google Pixel 5 will be available in the US and UK on October 15. An exact release date for other markets has yet to be revealed.

The Google Pixel 5 design is what you see above. The phone comes in two colors with odd names: Sorta Sage (a green color) and Just Black (that's just black). The body of the phone is made of recycled aluminium too.

The phone is IPX8 water-resistant, which should mean you're able to submerge this device in water for up to half an hour. The phone weighs 151 grams, and it has dimensions of 144.7 x 70.4 x 8mm.

The phone comes with a 6-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340, which is 432 pixels per inch. It's an always-on display, and it's an OLED panel.

Google has included 90Hz tech here, so the screen refresh rate will be faster than on previous Google phones for smoother scrolling and transitions. That said, this isn't as good as some top-end handsets that feature a 120Hz refresh rate, while the newly announced Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro boasts a 144Hz refresh rate.

There's a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone, but there's no 3.5mm headphone jack here. The phone also comes with stereo speakers as well, but there's no 3.5mm audio jack included in the box.

Cameras-wise, you can expect the same setup as on the Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4a. The Pixel 5 features a 12.2MP dual-pixel shooter with 1.4μm pixel width, and there's also a 16MP ultra-wide shooter.

We've found this camera to perform brilliantly in our reviews of those older phones, so we're hoping for a similar result here. On the front of the phone you'll find an 8MP selfie camera.

Google Pixel 5 specs and performance

Pixel 5

Unlike previous Pixel flagships, the Pixel 5 doesn't feature the top-end chipset you'd expect. Instead, the company has opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, which won't be as powerful as the chipsets you find in phones like the OnePlus 8 Pro or Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

That said, the phones we've seen running this chipset have been powerful enough for everyday tasks, so we hope it's a similar story with the Pixel 5 when we're able to try the phone out.

There's 8GB of RAM in the phone, and 128GB of storage. There's no microSD support, and Google has yet to announce any other storage variants for the Pixel 5 so you'll be limited to just 128GB.

There's a 4,080mAh battery inside the phone, and the company has included wireless charging as well. There's also a reverse-charging feature called Battery Share, so you can use your Pixel 5 to charge supported devices.

It supports 18W fast-charging, and the correct charger for you to be able to reach those speeds is included in the box.

Google claims the phone will last a full day from a single charge, and we'll be sure to put that claim to the test in our full review. The Google Pixel 4's battery life wasn't impressive, so we're hoping Google has improved things here.

You get 5G connectivity on the Pixel 5 as well, but be warned that you'll need to have a 5G contract, and live in area that has 5G connectivity, to make the most of that.

The Google Pixel 5 comes running Android 11 out of the box, which is the company's latest version of its operating system. You can expect this device to get solid updates over the next few years at least.

PS Plus October 2020 PS4 Games Announced - Push Square

@Johnnycide Its all about what kind of gamer you are.
If you are the kind of gamer that has a disposable income, at least to a degree that you can buy used titles a year later, then PS+ is not going to give you much that you don't already own.

Then there are the types that are more casual, they buy 5-15 titles per generation (iirc the average attach rate last generation was like 7.5?) either because of cost, or just because they are not that interested, either way, these gamers are going to get one hell of a value out of PS+.

For me, the only time I get value out of a PS+ title is when its a non-multiplayer indie title. Which doesn't happen as often as it did in the early PS4 days.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Next DLC Fighter To Be Revealed Tomorrow, 1st October - Nintendo Life

Smash

Nintendo has announced that the next DLC fighter set to be released in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be revealed tomorrow, 1st October.

The character will be revealed in a video presentation which will be followed by "a brief message from Director Masahiro Sakurai," suggesting that we might not get the usual half-an-hour explanation video this time around. The video will go live at 7am PT / 10am ET / 3pm BST / 4pm CEST.

We'll be covering the announcement right here on Nintendo Life, so make sure to check back with us tomorrow to see the character reveal. Sounds like the rumours generated from those Japanese store adverts were true, eh?

Go on, then. Who do you think it'll be?

Xiaomi's new Mi 10T lineup is lean on your wallet but heavy on features - Android Police

Xiaomi is known for its cheap phones, whether they come under its own brand name or its Redmi and Poco sub-brands. Its devices provide great hardware with decent software support for pretty low prices. Today, the company is launching 3 new phones in the Mi 10T series, the Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro, and Mi 10T Lite.

One of the first things worth mentioning about the new Mi 10T devices is that these aren't really successors to the Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and Mi 10 Lite. Instead, they're cheaper flagships and the only thing they have in common with the Mi 10 series is the name.

Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro

The Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro are very similar devices, the only difference being the camera setup. The Pro has a 108MP main sensor while the regular one sports a 64MP main sensor, though the secondary 13MP ultra-wide and 5MP macro sensors are the same.

Both devices come with a 6.67" 144Hz LCD display, which offers adaptive refresh rates to help save battery. It can switch between 30, 48, 50, 60, 120, and 144Hz on the fly. Xiaomi also added MEMC — you know, that interpolation tech that gives you that "soap opera" effect — to better take advantage of that high framerate. The display has a max brightness of 650nits and supports DCI-P3 and HDR10. It's an LCD, though, so that means a lower contrast ratio than the AMOLED displays Xiaomi includes in even some cheaper devices.

Both phones run on the Snapdragon 865. They support WiFi 6 and 5G MultiLink — a software feature that Xiaomi uses to connect to 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 5G network at the same time to boost download speeds. They also have higher-quality LRAs for haptics, dual speakers with Hi-Res Audio certification, and a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging (a compatible charger will be included in the box). The lack of fast wireless charging is disappointing, especially after the seeing it go up to 55W on the Mi 10 Ultra.

The Xiaomi Mi 10T's starting price is €499, as previous rumors had insinuated, while the Mi 10T Pro starts at €599.

Mi 10 Lite

Unlike the other two phones in the series, the Mi 10T Lite is more firmly in the budget territory. Visually, it's similar to Xiaomi's recently released Poco X3 NFC, but on the inside, it's very different.

It's the first device to use Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 750G chipset — the successor to the Snapdragon 730G used in Google's Pixel 4a — which is slightly faster and has an integrated 5G modem. The screen is also downgraded a bit compared to the other phones in the series, hitting a dimmer 450nits brightness, a narrower color gamut, and a slightly less smooth 120Hz.

There's a quad-camera setup instead of the triple one on the Mi 10T and Pro. It includes a 64MP main, 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth sensor. The front camera is different as well — 16MP instead of 20MP — and its hole is centered instead of set to the top left.

The Mi 10T will start at €279, a very respectable and affordable price considering its specs.

Mi Watch

Xiaomi is also launching a new wearable today, with the simultaneously on-brand but super generic "Mi Watch" name. It's a basic fitness tracking smartwatch that is claimed to offer up to 16 days of battery life on a mere 420mAh and with a 1.39" 454 x 454 AMOLED display that can hit up to 450 nits of brightness. Water-resistance is rated for up to 5 ATM, or about 165 feet, which is about average for most modern smartwatches. This is good for swimming and most basic watersports.

Xiaomi says the Mi Watch can track a total of 117 different fitness modes and a few different heart-related measurements. Its health sensors can track heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep cycles, stress levels, and energy levels. There's also an air pressure sensor for the included barometer app.

Unfortunately, the Mi Watch doesn't run Wear OS, which means it'll offer limited app support. Xiaomi doesn't say exactly which OS it's running, but it's likely something proprietary. The watch has a GPS, compass, and barometer, and you can even use it as a camera shutter. It supports Amazon Alexa voice control, but I'm not sure how this will work as the watch doesn't seem to have a microphone.

The Mi Watch will come in three colors: black, navy blue, and beige. The band will be available in six colors: black, navy blue, orange, olive, beige, and yellow. It will cost €99 and Xiaomi says it will be available soon but has no official date.

Nintendo decides not to delete Jump Rope Challenge from the eShop today - Eurogamer.net

All-Star decision.

Jump Rope Challenge, the free Nintendo Switch game designed to promote exercise at home during the global pandemic, will no longer be deleted from the eShop today.

Nintendo revealed the news via Twitter this morning, and announced some 2.5bn jumps had been completed in-game by players worldwide.

Developed by Nintendo designers while they themselves were in lockdown earlier this year, Jump Rope Challenge was originally designed as a limited-time release.

"As new jumpers are joining, the free download will be available until further noice and will not be removed from the Nintendo eShop on 9/30," Nintendo wrote. Hey, that's today!

Anyway, speaking of eShop games due to be arbitrarily deleted from the eShop on a certain date... Nintendo fans have today renewed their calls for Mario 3D All-Stars to also get a reprieve when the time comes.
