As the first mainline entry in the Final Fantasy series to get a sequel, it never seemed out of the realms of possibility that a third game in the Final Fantasy X storyline would eventually get made. It seems that's now one step closer to happening, after Tetsuya Nomura revealed that a story for the potential sequel has been written – but it likely won't become a full game for a long time yet..
The comments were made in an interview between Nomura, Final Fantasy 10 director Motomu Toriyama, and Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, and were translated by RPGSite. Nomura stated that “If we are to make 10-3, we somehow have a synopsis written by [Final Fantasy 10 writer Kazushige Nojima]”, and that "It's sleeping right now, but the plot itself does exist."
Toriyama similarly expressed interest in returning to the world of Spira, but outlined the challenges that could impede the progress of any development on a sequel. He stated that, "The probability is not zero”, but that, “we are not in a phase where we can talk about it, unless we have finished producing FF7 Remake."
Given that the first game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series (that just focused on the Midgar portion of the game) only launched last year, and will likely see at least two more games before it’s complete, we may be waiting a while for the team to get started on a potential FFX-3.
Nomura previously worked on the character designs for Final Fantasy X, as well as a wide range of other Square Enix franchises (specifically ones where the characters wear a lot of belts – the dude loves belts), so he has been intimately involved with the story, world, and characters of Final Fantasy X.
Final Fantasy X is one of the most popular games in the Final Fantasy series, particularly in Japan where it has repeatedly topped voting polls as the fan-favourite FF game. It makes sense for Square Enix to want to revisit that story, especially after the FFX series was expanded upon yet again in the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, which included a new audio drama that continued the story after the end of FFX-2.
