Former Arsenal and England footballer Alex Scott’s meteoric rise as a pundit has seen her land a job in FIFA 22, where she’ll appear as a side-line reporter digging into events occurring off-screen. The broadcaster – who’ll become the first ever female voice in the franchise – will fulfil Alan McInally’s role, providing insight into events unfolding at other grounds around England.
She’s part of a shake-up to the commentary team in this year’s soccer sim, with Lee Dixon replaced by ex-Arsenal player Stewart Robson, who’s perhaps best known for his appearances on ESPN. Derek Rae will return as the main anchor, meaning Manchester United fans may have to endure another season of ‘Bruno Fernandsh’.
Scott has become a staple of UK television these past couple of years, and will takeover as host on Football Focus next season, while also featuring as part of the presenting crew at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She’s also branched out into other, non-sporting topics – including a series of BBC reports on mental health.
It’ll be interesting to see whether FIFA eventually incorporates female teams outside of internationals, as rival sports game NBA 2K21 added a full campaign for the WNBA last year, while superstar Candace Parker is on the cover of an NBA 2K22 special edition. There’s no word on the Women’s Super League being in FIFA 22, so perhaps not this year, then.
