Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade: How much does it cost – can you REALLY update for free? - Express

ended support for its Windows 7 operating system at the start of this year. Those who continue to use Windows 7 could consequently find themselves vulnerable to hackers happy to capitalise on Microsoft focusing solely on its successor. An upgrade to ensures software will receive the latest updates, best bugs fixes and more – but at a price.

On its advice on its Windows 7 support page, Microsoft revealed the attraction of upgrading to Windows 10.

The tech company said: "For most Windows 7 users, moving to a new device with Windows 10 will be the recommended path forward.

"Today's PCs are faster, lightweight yet powerful, and more secure, with an average price that's considerably less than that of the average PC eight years ago.

"We recommend that you don’t install Windows 10 on an older device, as some Windows 7 devices are not compatible with Windows 10 or could experience reduced feature availability."

How much does a Windows 10 upgrade cost?

The cheapest option available is the Windows 10 Home edition, which is considered the best for personal or household use.

Home edition costs £119.99 for a single license, meaning it is valid for only one PC.

Windows 10 Pro is optimised for small businesses or users needing enhanced functionality and costs £219.99 for one license.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, designed for advanced users and small businesses requiring enhanced functionality with the ability to compute intensive workloads, costs £339.

Users who have already saved the most important data via an external drive or cloud storage option could see huge performance gains from a completely clean installation.

However, keeping all of your files and apps intact is probably the best option for most users.

Upgrading to Windows 10 may take a few hours to download everything.

Your PC reboots itself several times but the software should eventually revive itself with everything as you left it on the desktop.

Microsoft makes you tap through a few privacy arrangements and sign in to your Microsoft Account if you have one – or create one if you do not.

The final step in the whole process is to launch the Start Menu and search for the word Activation.

Click on the first hit to check whether your existing Windows 7 licence has successfully been migrated across into an activated version of Windows 10.

If your Windows 10 is not showing as activated, you will need to pay for a licence.
