Freeview viewers complain as popular channels lost on hundreds of TVs - Express

Some Freeview users hoping for a quiet afternoon in front of the television are facing some serious disappointment. The popular free television service appears to be having big issues with hundreds of complaints that all TV channels including BBC and ITV have suddenly vanished without any notice.

The gremlins appear to have begun at around 1.30pm with the issues still ongoing. Numerous reports have flooded in that a mast, which supplies the Freeview signal to thousands of homes, is on fire at Bilsdale. This has since been confirmed by Freeview with the company saying: "There is a fire at the Bilsdale transmitter disrupting services in North East England. There is no need to retune your device, services will be restored once the problem has been fixed." It's unclear how serious the problem is but a fire could clearly disrupt things for some time.

The problem is now causing major disruption with Downdetector - a service that monitors outages across the world - currently showing a large number of complaints with most centred around the North East. Speaking on its forum page one frustrated user said: "All channels of on my Bisdale tuned TV are off. I use indoor aerial and was working fine until approx 1:30 pm."

And another Freeview fan added: "Signal in Wingate disappeared on all channels around 1.15pm today. It's raining now but was sunny at the time. Very annoying."

Along with Freeview users complaining on Downdetector, many have also taken to social media to vent their frustration at the outage with one saying: "Hi. I have 161 channels currently, in the Mendip area. I have Freeview HD, so is that all of them, or am I still missing any please?"

And another added: "Suddenly no signal in Darlington. all stations down."

Freeview's advice page on Twitter has responded to numerous customers with the team saying, "Deepest apologies, the Bilsdale transmitter currently has reported faults. There are engineers onsite resolving the issue."

There's no word on when things will be fixed but Express.co.uk will update this article when we hear more and it's worth remembering that there's no need to retune your Freeview box.
