Apple releases iOS 14 today, surprising many iOS developers - Eurogamer.net

"A big WTF."

Apple last night threw the covers off a range of new iPads and Apple Watches, and fully unveiled its new iOS 14 operating system.

But while app developers knew iOS 14 was coming - indeed, developer versions have been available now for a few months - they did not know when it would arrive.

It was a little surprising, then, when Apple announced it would begin iOS 14's rollout... today.

Numerous app developers reacted in surprise at the news, and there was a scramble overnight to inform users that updating to the new operating system might break unsupported apps.

Other developers expressed frustration they were not able to capitalise on the traditional planned release day for Apple's latest operating system - a lucrative moment when App Store browsing peaks.

iOS 14 adds app support for Android-style home screen widgets and introduces App Clips - bitesize parts of an app which let you use your Apple ID to pay or log-in to a service without having to download its full app.

Pokémon Go was one of several games to warn users against upgrading - though in the last few hours it announced it has rushed out an update to ensure compatibility with iOS 14.
