Amazon Event 2020 as it happened: new gaming service Luna headlines huge launch - TechRadar

Refresh

Amazon is lamenting that we can't see all of these devices right now - usually we'd be scrumming in to go and see everything. But instead, they're 'coming soon' and we at TechRadar will hopefully be bringing you previews ASAP.

That looks like it for the live stream - thanks so much for sticking around, it's been a lot of fun*.

*It was hell. They were having to fade people out from talking, such was the speed of the show.

We're hearing from all these gamers playing on the TV, then on the phone, and it's also integrated with Twitch too. The people Amazon has grabbed to be on this stream are very excited by this.

This is pretty big from Amazon - it already feels more thought out than Stadia, and having the Twitch platform on board too is a nice move.

So when playing Luna on the Fire TV stick, you're getting 20ms back, rather than connecting a Bluetooth controller.

There's a game controller - all the 'buttons and sticks and feels' for gaming. But it also has 'cloud direct' connectivity, and that allows Amazon to remove more latency.

It's called the Luna controller, and it's designed to make it easier to move between devices because there's no pairing. It's connecting to the game in the cloud.

You can play games anywhere - TV, PC, laptop, phone, tablet - this is a lot like Google Stadia.

It's built on top of AWS to help stream with low-latency right down from the cloud.

What games are coming though? Erm - we just saw a load of titles but nothing specific. It'll be $5.99 per month.

Oh, wait, there are some games: Sonic, Control, and there will be a tie-in with Ubisoft, so Assassin's Creed: Valhalla right from launch. There will be 100+ games in Early Access, split between the Luna channel and Ubisoft.

There's a new Fire TV Stick for HD streaming, HDR, Dolby Atmos, the Alexa voice remote - it's 50% more powerful than the last generation while using less power.

$39.99 - and there's a Fire TV Stick Lite, a simplified Alexa remote (whatever that means) but that starts at $29.99 to offer the 'most streaming power anywhere' for under $30.

Aaaaaaaaaand we're onto Luna, Amazon's new gaming service. PLEASE STOP, AMAZON.

You'll also get picture in picture, so can view your Ring doorbells, and asking Alexa will now become a small, non-invasive part of what you're watching and answer with cards that don't get in the way.

Here comes the new Fire TV user interface. First up: profiles, to allow tailored recommendations to what you want to watch.

Amazon is bringing in a number of new privacy settings - the top one is 'Alexa, delete everything I've ever said'. That'll be nice - and it'll do that moving forward too. Amazon is going big on privacy with this event.

The new Alexa commands include 'Alexa, turn off motion' and 'Alexa, review my privacy settings' to let you tweak and personalize what you're comfortable with.

The new Echo Show 10 can use the camera to look around the room and act as a security camera - with Sentry Mode in the Alexa app.

It's going to be $249.99 - but there's no word on when these are going to be coming.

Actually, let's be fair - this helps you stay in frame when you're moving around the kitchen. You can have conversations moving around - there's a 10-inch HD screen, a 12MP camera, 2.1 audio system, adaptive sound - it basically looks like an Echo Studio with a screen stuck on the front that can move.

And you can watch Netflix on it!

Right, let's get onto Echo Show. What's happening here? Well, it's the all-new Echo Show 10.

It's using something called 'Intelligent motion' - and it'll follow you around the room, without a noisy motor that'll make noise.

I thought that meant it wouldn't be creepy and watch you move, but no - it's just silent. A 'virtually silent' brushless motor.

I repeat - a drone that will fly around the home, the Always Home Cam. It's 1080p, only indoors, will be loud so it's not being seen and it'll fly on preset routes.

That's a sentry that you can deploy around the house at your whim. It's triggered by Ring or the use and and only records when in motion.

This all feels like a futuristic, pre-dystopian movie. And yet it feels normal.

Next up, Ring car cam - it'll watch your car and give emergency crash assist to. If you crash, emergency responders will be dispatched. That's some futuristic stuff.

This is interesting - you can say 'Alexa, I'm being pulled over' to your Ring Car Cam and it'll start recording. That's going to be big for police stops.

Ring Car Conenct will work with any car and will leverage any existing system - and coming to Tesla first. The Alarm is $59.99, the Car Cam $199.99, and the Car Connect system will be $199.99.

OH MY WORD AGAIN THERE'S A FLYING CAMERA FOR YOUR HOME.

OH MY WORD we're already onto Ring. What's happening here?

Interesting, Ring is talking about how it was the first to add two factor authentication in the industry, and that it's now end-to-end encrypted to make things even faster.

What now there are more things? There's a Ring Car Alarm, making it affordable and it'll monitor for activity and will send activity to the ring app. It's got sirens and wait that was the end of it.

There's an all-new line of Eero products, with the Eero 6 and the Eero 6 Plus coming for $129.99 and $229.99 to bring Wi-Fo 6 tech, allow you to connect more than 75 simultaneous devices, and - of course - mesh Wi-Fi.

I literally can't keep up. This is hard to follow.

Now we're talking about Amazon Guard - Alexa is now starting 1 in 5 interactions based on being prompted by many sounds.

Now Alexa can hear snoring, babies crying, barking dogs - and you can set up routines so that something happens to soothe the situation.

Alexa Guard Plus is coming too, bringing enhanced features for $4.99 per month with the first month free.

'Alexa - join our conversation' is a new feature so that people can interact better. You can have a conversation with Alexa, stop her in the middle of the list, talk over Alexa chatting and confirming things - more like a 'normal conversation'.

This is both amazing and frightening - Alexa will always be listening, will know when she's being addressed or other people aren't talking to her. Who should she respond to? What is being asked? It's using acoustic, linguistic and even visual cues.

It feels like you suddenly realize someone has been in the room the WHOLE TIME when you think you're alone.

Our Executive Editor Gerald Lynch just said in big, bold letters: THIS IS ALL A BIG DEAL.

Now we're hearing about how Alexa has a more conversational mode - so there are pauses, commas and almost breaths as you'd expect to hear from a human.

It's thankfully still clear that it's not a person - but it's not far off. See that point below - the charge of the machines.

You can basically set your desires: 'Set Gareth's reading mode' and Alexa will ask what you mean - and remember it.

Every time I hear stuff like this, I wonder if this is the moment we should have realized the machines are about to take over.

Now we're hearing about the AI being used to help Alexa figure out when she's made a mistake. Say 'Alexa, that's wrong' and she'll learn. Now she'll ask questions of humans to help her understanding.

'What do you mean by...' will help her get more contextually understanding - you can create settings based on your desires.

Oh my, there's going to be a lot of stuff today. There's a new Echo Dot ($49.99), that is the same spherical design. The Echo Dot with Clock is there too, coming for $59.99.

And an Echo Dot Kids Edition - with voice profiles for kids, and there's a Reading Sidekick that helps them read along... but that feels like it's taking away from, you know, being a parent.

Amazon is building wind and solar farms to try and be more balanced in terms of the new devices and products it's making.

Oooh, there's a new Echo - it's spherical.

(Sorry, that's not to say that renewable energy isn't really - it is-  but the new Echo will have loads of functions, including the Alexa light ring around the base, it'll automatically adapt to the acoustics of the room, and will cost $99.99).

Is that an Amazon Halo on Dave's wrist? Yes, yes I believe it is.

We're going to certainly see new devices from the Echo range and more, and Amazon is committed to being more sustainable - and that the new Echo and Fire TV will be made with more sustainable materials.

Devices will be given low-power modes to allow you to use less energy, and a dashboard to see how much they're using.

Here we go - we're hearing about how great Amazon's device and services are - being able to call, see and communicate with others using the wonder that is Alexa.

We're live in the Amazon HQ - but then again, is it live? It's Dave Limp - SVP of devices - getting inspired and lucky to be part of his team.

The event begins

We're now 15 minutes away from the start of today's Amazon event – and we're starting to get excited for some of the more 'out there' devices we could see today.

No Amazon event is complete without the announcement of bonkers smart home devices. Last year, the company announced its first smart glasses, the Amazon Echo Frames, and the Echo Loop, a smart, Alexa-powered ring (yes, you read that correctly).

Both devices are only available under invitation only, so perhaps the 2020 event could be when the smart wearables are released to the general public.

2019’s event didn’t stop at wearables, however; Amazon also brought us a smart oven and a smart lamp, while previous years have seen the likes of the Amazon Echo Wall Clock. You can almost be certain that the 2020 event will bring more Alexa-powered home appliances, as smart home devices become more and more popular.

Today's event won't be just about audio, though:

New Amazon Fire TV devices

It's been a while since we've seen new Amazon Fire TV streaming devices; the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K launched in 2018, and while the Fire TV Cube was updated in 2019, it could be time for an 8K Fire TV device, to complement the new wave of 8K TVs in 2020.

Alexa improvements and service updates

The invitation to the hardware event that was sent to the media mentioned “Devices and Services” – and that means we could see some updates to Alexa, as well as new products.

Last year, Amazon announced a new Alexa skill that allows the voice assistant to speak with actor Samuel L. Jackson’s voice (for a fee). It’s possible that more celebrity voices for Alexa will be announced, although the sombre global mood in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic could put a damper on more frivolous announcements.

Today's event could also see some updates to Amazon’s services, including Prime Video, Amazon Music, Audible, and more.

Right, so let's get onto what we're going to see? Yeah, it's all about the sound to start:

amazon echo studio

New Amazon Echo speakers

Last year’s hardware event gave us a bevy of new Amazon Echo speakers, and we’re expecting more of the same in 2020.

Some of Amazon’s smart speakers were given updates, like the Amazon Echo and the Echo Dot with Clock, while some were completely new models, like the Amazon Echo Studio, which is the brand's high-spec, audiophile-targeting Dolby Atmos speaker

It’s possible that the 2020 hardware event will bring a smaller, cheaper version of the Echo Studio – perhaps sold as a pair of stereo speakers, to boost the Studio’s home cinema capabilities.

What would be even better than that? An Amazon Echo soundbar, complete with Dolby Atmos to compete with the Sonos Arc.

2019 also saw in the budget-friendly Amazon Echo Flex, which brings Alexa smarts to your home by plugging into a mains power socket and connecting to your home’s Wi-Fi network.

Since then, Amazon has announced a new accessory for the tiny speaker that turns it into a clock too. Called the Smart Clock For Echo Flex, this handy attachment tells you the time and can also automatically adjust its brightness throughout the day.

We could see more Echo Flex accessories later today; we’d love to see a modular speaker add-on, to boost the Flex’s tinny audio quality.

It’s probably about time for Amazon to update its range of smart displays, too; last year brought us the Echo Show 8, which combined the audio quality of the 10-inch Echo Show, with the camera shutter of the Echo Show 5, all in a new eight-inch form. Now that the line up is complete, could we be in for a complete refresh of the Show series? Only time will tell.

New Amazon Echo Buds

The 2019 hardware event gave us the Amazon Echo Buds, which were the company’s first true wireless earbuds to rival the Apple AirPods

While we were impressed by their budget-friendly price and excellent noise reduction, the sound quality and battery life left a lot to be desired – and that means the Echo Buds are due an upgrade in 2020.

Updates to Amazon’s wireless earbuds could include noise cancellation, to bring them in line with the AirPods Pro, improved audio quality, and longer battery life.

We're t-minus just-under-an-hour away from the event starting - we're not hearing too much in the way of exciting news emanating from the (virtual) event hall itself.

This time last year we were sat in the audience, unaware that there was going to be a tsunami of Amazon products coming our way - Echo Dots with clocks on, better-sounding speakers, clocks with countdown LEDs on... the list is endless.

Well, not endless. There were about two dozen of them.
