PlayStation Temporarily Pulls the Plug on Facebook, Instagram Advertising - Push Square

PlayStation Facebook

PlayStation has added its name to a growing number of brands that have temporarily ceased advertising on Facebook, as firms put pressure on the social network to reduce the amount of hate speech appearing on the platform. Juggernauts such as Coca-Cola, Ford, Starbucks, Unilever, and Honda have also suspended Facebook advertising.

The social network has attracted strong criticism for its rules regarding hate speech and misinformation; competitors such as Twitter have already started to crack down on this kind of content. PlayStation will also temporarily halt any paid promotions its running on Instagram, which is a subsidiary of Facebook.

“In support of the #StopHateForProfit campaign, we have globally suspended our Facebook and Instagram activity, including advertising and non-paid content, until the end of July. We stand for working (and playing) together for good.” The wording suggests that it’ll cease updating its pages as well, but with the last updates only 14 hours ago we’ll need to wait and see if that’s truly the case.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
