Is this stunning Superstrata e-bike the Tesla of electric bikes? - Express

Superstrata looks unlike any electric bike we've seen before. First revealed on July 13 and clocking up an eye-watering £1million in pre-orders within the first 24-hours, the bike is designed to be made-to-measure. So, chances are, there won't be much of a lively second-hand market as each bike is 3D-printed to perfectly fit the customer.

With the customisation available for the sizing as well as a host of optional extras and upgrades, Superstrata claims there are a maximum of 500,000 possible combinations, which makes it "the most versatile carbon fibre bike ever made," according to its marketing department.

Superstrata is built from an impact-resistant unibody carbon fibre frame and is available as an e-bike and a traditional non-motor assisted version. And at the moment, the US company is offering a pre-order discount on the usual £2,599 (traditional, known as Terra) and £3,699 (e-bike, dubbed Ion) price tags. If you're quick, you can secure the Superstrata Terra for £1,420 and Ion for £1,895.

According to the firm, Superstrata leverages 3D printing technology for a true unibody construction – so there won't be any joints, glue, bolts or welding marks on the frame. Superstrata says the bike is produced using next-generation thermoplastic materials, which is designed to make it extremely impact resistant – while also still staying remarkably lightweight.

In fact, Superstrata says the cycle weighs less than two bottles of water. The pedal-assisted Superstrata Ion will weigh a little more because of the battery, which can help you up hills and reach record speeds on the flat for up to 55-mile range.

“My Olympic race bikes were light, but would crack when pushed too hard or crashed. Having a bike that’s light like other carbon fiber bikes but really tough is a dream come true,” said Sky Christopherson, two-time former Olympian cyclist and world record holder for the velodrome sprint.

While both Terra and Ion models are available to pre-order now, Superstrata doesn't expect any bikes to ship until December 2020.

If you don't fancy pre-ordering based on the glossy images online, the newly-launched Bike Shop in Selfridges Oxford Street includes a Superstrata model to ogle before you place your order. It's unclear exactly when the early bird prices will revert to the eye-watering full price tag... so best to plan a trip sooner rather than later.
