Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G Confirmed - But No XL Model - Gizmodo UK

We've known for a while that new Google Pixel phones were imminent, but we now have new details about what they'll be called, which gives us carte blanche for all kinds of fun speculation.

The clever bods at 9To5Google dove into the code for the latest version of the Google Search app to see if they could find anything juicy, and came up trumps:

Those random nature words and fish names are the codenames for the phones that the tech community has been aware of for a while now, plus the real, official names. So the two phones we didn't yet know the names of are the Pixel 4a (5G) and the Pixel 5.

This is interesting because when two codenames leaked, we naturally assumed they'd be the Pixel 5 and 5 XL, based on previous releases. Now, it's looking like there won't be a Pixel 5 XL – the first time a Pixel will be released without an accompanying XL model – and instead we're getting a 5G version of the 4a that honestly, no one really asked for.

It seems a bit odd to us to release a separate 5G version of a budget phone. The Pixel 4a pricing leaked a little while back and it's looking to be in the £400 range: we're struggling to imagine many people who want a budget phone but also want 5G, and if they do, why not just make one model with 5G built in?

Still, we're sure the Big G know what they're doing.

The 4a recently cleared certification and its predecessor the 3a was discontinued, so it's not looking like we'll have long to wait to find out exactly what Google has lined up for us phone nerds. [9To5Google]
