Gigi Hadid has the perfect jawline, according to science - Daily Mail

  • Gigi Hadid has a jaw angle of 141.9 degrees viewed from the front of her face
  • That is close to the 'perfect' angle of 142 degrees, according to researchers

Model Gigi Hadid may have the perfect jawline, a study has concluded.

The 28-year-old supermodel, who has a child with former One Direction singer Zayn Malik and has been linked to actor Leonardo DiCaprio, has a jaw angle of 141.9 degrees viewed from the front of her face.

That is close to the 'perfect' angle of 142 degrees, according to researchers.

When the model's face was shown to 32 expert facial surgeons and 16 ordinary people, they unanimously agreed her jawline was neither too steep nor too flat.

Meanwhile an older supermodel, Kate Moss, was found to have a beautiful jaw angle from the front, which 76 per cent of experts and non-experts rated as attractive.

The jaw angle is measured where the vertical part of the jaw, coming straight down from the ear, changes angle to become a more gentle slope towards the chin.

A larger angle tends to be seen as more smooth and feminine, while a smaller angle is more masculine, as seen as in square-jawed celebrities like Brad Pitt.

Stella Maxwell, model and ex-girlfriend of pop star Miley Cyrus and actress Kristen Stewart, was rated highest for how closely the vertical part of her jaw matched the slope of her forehead.

Meanwhile Jessica Stam, who is known as one of the 'doll face' models, was found to have the best ratio of the distance across her jawline compared to the distance across the middle of her face.

The results come from a study reported in the Journal of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery, published by Elsevier.

Dr Robbert Cleymaet, from the division of oro-maxillofacial surgery at University Hospital Ghent in Belgium, who led the study, said: 'It is amazing that relatively small differences in the angle of women's jaws can really have a large impact on people's views of their attractiveness.

'The pandemic has shifted face-to-face meetings onto video calls, making people more conscious of their facial appearance, so it is interesting, not just for scientists, to know which angles and contours of the face are seen to be beautiful.'

Researchers conducted an online survey, in which they asked people to rate different aspects of the jawlines of 53 female celebrities and models.

Actress Amber Heard was rated as having a jaw angle which was not too steep and not too flat by 95 per cent of raters.

Screen siren Brigitte Bardot and the Russian model Irina Shayk, former partner of actor Bradley Cooper, were found to have an attractive slope of their lower jaw, by at least 80 per cent of the raters.

Based on the ratings, the study concludes the perfect jawline is at 142 degrees when viewed from the front and 125.5 degrees when seen in profile.

The ratio of the distance across the jaw, compared to the distance across the middle of the face, is 0.83.

It follows a similar study in 2016 which found men are preferred to have a strong jaw.

For example, two-thirds of people surveyed for that study rated actor Brad Pitt's jaw as having a good vertical position.

The current study, on female faces, concludes that some women might end up having implants to achieve the perfect jawline.

On the importance of jaw structure, the researchers conclude: 'The importance of pleasing facial aesthetics in numerous elements of one's wellbeing, and quality of life is traditionally understated in medicine.

'An attractive face is associated with more opportunities, more success and self-confidence.'
