Microsoft held their Xbox Games Showcase today in an effort to turn around the negative PR the company has been hit with over its lack of first-party titles and the disastrous “Redfall” launch. They may have succeeded.
Outside of the impressive “Spider-Man 2” presentation, the PlayStation Showcase the other week came under fire for its lack of first-party titles and focus on live-service games.
Microsoft appears to have avoided that criticism and offered fresh looks at some upcoming first-party games in including an extended “Starfield” presentation and a confirmed October 10th release date for “Forza Motorsport”.
There was also the first gameplay from the new “Fable” with British comedy legend Richard Ayoade appearing in the clip for the game which still doesn’t have a release window. There’s also a brief bit of gameplay from fantasy “Avowed” and a new look at “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II” with both those titles said to be coming in 2024.
In addition “Sea of Thieves” is getting a free DLC expansion based on “The Secret of Monkey Island”. Titled “The Legend of Monkey Island,” it will be released in three monthly chapters starting on July 20th. Players will visit freely explorable versions of both Mêlée Island and Monkey Island, solving puzzles in a point-and-click style adapted for Sea of Thieves first-person view.
There was also the fantasy action-adventure “South of Midnight” set in the U.S. deep south and from the makers of “We Happy Few,” and “Clockwork Revolution” dubbed a time-bending steampunk first-person RPG in development at InXile Entertainment. No dates for either.
In terms of third party titles coming to all platforms including PC and PlayStation, “Payday 3” is coming September 21st, the DLC “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty” hits September 26th, and “Cities Skylines 2” arrives October 24th.
Third party titles also coming next year include the remake “Persona 3 Reload” and “Yakuza: Like a Dragon” sequel titled “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth”. Finally in terms of hardware, a carbon black Series S with 1TB of storage is on the way and be available from September 1st at $349. Check out some of the trailers below.
