Horizon Forbidden West State of Play: Lots of New Gameplay, But No Release Date Yet - IGN

We now know a bit more about Horizon Forbidden West. Sony showed quite a bit of gameplay today in its State of Play stream, as well as some new enemies. However, PlayStation declined to reveal a new release date for its anticipated tentpole release.

In a PlayStation Blog following the State of Play, Guerilla Games narrative director Ben McCaw wrote, "We don’t have an exact release date yet, but development is on track and we’ll have an update for you very soon."

Instead, we were treated to an extended snippet of Horizon Forbidden West gameplay. Over the course of 14 minutes, we got to see new tools, combat techniques, and machines as Guerilla Games showed off the upcoming sequel. Here's some of what we saw.

Horizon Forbidden West Offers Glimpses Of Its Underwater Gameplay, Combat

The demo begins with Aloy finding an ambush survivor, who says that local raiders have machines on their side. Sure enough, a raider appears riding a velociraptor-like machine as Aloy takes cover. We're given a glimpse of Aloy being chased by the machines, using smoke bombs to throw off their pursuit as they try and flank and surround her. Aloy is finally pushed to leap into the water, where we're treated to a gorgeous rendition of the new underwater exploration. The footage shown is reminiscent of Subnautica, with schools of fish swimming about as leviathan-like machines glide past.

In the next section, Aloy creeps around ruins inhabited by raiders. Some more of the combat is shown here, including a stealthy takedown, and a battle with a raider wielding a massive hammer. In a nifty sequence, Aloy does a kick jump off the raider and takes him out with a shot from her bow.

Following the battle, Aloy catches a glimpse of the Golden Gate bridge, at one point using an energy glider to float down to the beach. She takes control of one of the machines and rides in to battle more raiders, only to find herself face-to-face with a massive machine resembling an Oliphaunt from The Lord of Rings — a Tremortusk. What follows is the sort of intense and enjoyable battle that made Horizon Zero Dawn so popular on its initial release.

The demo finishes with Aloy looking over a map for her next destination, and the arrival of a strange red storm — a blight that could destroy all life. A storm is coming, and it's almost here.

An anticipated sequel

Horizon Forbidden West was first announced during Sony's PS5 reveal in June 2020. It will take place in a post-apocalyptic version of the American West, with Aloy exploring locations including the ruins of San Francisco and the Yosemite Valley. Underwater exploration will be a major component of the gameplay.

Horizon Forbidden West is currently set for release on both the PS4 and PS5. The PS5 version will of course take advantage of the Dualsense's unique features, allowing players to feel elements like the resistance of the bow string as Aloy draws it back. It will also feature an updated version of the Decima engine.

Horizon Zero Dawn was originally released in 2017. We praised its vast and beautiful open world and the way that it juggled its moving parts with polish and finesse. Horizon Zero Dawn has since become one of PlayStation's biggest franchises, and expectations will be high for the sequel when it eventually launches on PS5.
