The popularity of pimped-out commercial vehicles shows no sign of dipping in the UK. Ford certainly knows all about it, with the Ranger continuing to top the class not just in this country but across all of Europe. So happy is it about this that firm has delivered a new Raptor Special Edition to temporarily head the line-up, combining the rugged, 213hp diesel Ford Performance-tuned base with more kit and a plusher interior. It’ll launch proper across Europe this October, but we’d advise anyone tempted to notify dealers of their interest pronto...
On the outside – finished in either Performance Blue, Conquer Grey and Frozen White paint – the Special Edition wears twin matte black racing stripes with red edges. They’re applied to the bonnet, roof, lower body sides and tailgate, and come matched by red tow hooks, as well as matte black wheel arches, door handles and Ford logos.
Inside there's a unique double cab interior finish thanks to contrasting red stitching, which is applied to the steering wheel, centre console and door cards. As standard, the car gets Ford’s top-spec high-grain leather seats, as well as a Special Edition-specific Raceway Grey instrument panel. Otherwise, you get all of the other features of a regular Raptor, which is a well finished thing as is. Certainly, it’s nice enough to have lured plenty of commercial vehicle drivers out of vans and into a pick-up.
Of course, much more of the appeal in the Raptor comes from its rugged off-road abilities, which remain unchanged in the Special Edition. The strengthened chassis comes complete with aluminium double wishbone and multi-link suspension with FOX shock absorbers, Ford’s ‘Position Sensitive Damping’ and Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres offer maximum grip on loose surfaces. The Raptor sits on 150mm wider tracks and 51mm higher than its siblings, with power going to all four wheels via Ford’s 213hp bi-turbo diesel 2.0 EcoBlue. While it’s no V8, the four-cylinder is tractable and – key for its popularity in Britain – offers over 30mpg combined.
We’ve no word on pricing yet, but it’ll obviously sit above the normal £50k (with VAT) Raptor, at the top of a line-up that also includes Wildtrak and MS-RT models. Ford has not said how many of the limited run Special Editions will be made, but something tells us this’ll be another pick-up where demand outstrips supply.
