Newscast: PlayStation upsets VR fans as it kicks off this year's not-E3 hype cycle - Eurogamer

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we look back on the start of this year's June hype cycle, the period formerly known as E3, now a potpourri of other events and announcement livestreams.

PlayStation got the ball rolling last night with its latest State of Play broadcast, which included a look ahead at its rather meagre first-party plans for the remainder of 2024: a moderately buffed-up port of Until Dawn, online shooter Concord, and the charming Astro Bot. But, as our Ian wrote earlier, even the cute robot has got some people (VR fans) disgruntled. Still, as a flat-screen game, surely more people will now play it?

And then there was Silent Hill Transmission or, this time around, basically just a longer look at the upcoming Silent Hill 2 and a chance for Konami to promote a load of tie-in tat. Joining me this week are Eurogamer's Victoria Kennedy and Vikki Blake to discuss.

'Meta Quest 3S' Name Leaked By Quest Store Listing - UploadVR

Meta's lower cost version of the Quest 3 should be named Quest 3S, a new leak seems to confirm.

As of this writing, multiple official Quest store pages list support for "Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2." Below is a screenshot example from the Alo Moves XR app:

We've been closely following evidence Meta is preparing a cheaper alternative to Quest 3 to replace Quest 2 in its lineup. You can read our recent round-up summarizing everything we know about the device, which is likely to include older lens technology to cut cost while still resembling the Quest 3. Quest 3S should also carry the XR2 Gen 2 processor that's at the heart of the Quest 3, meaning it should run the same VR content at the same quality level.

Quest 3 was announced on June 1, 2023.

Cambridge Scientists Develop “Third Thumb” That Could Redefine Human Capability - SciTechDaily

Third Thumb Design

Cambridge researchers developed a controllable prosthetic extra thumb that people can quickly learn to use for picking up and manipulating objects. Testing at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition showed that the device is accessible to a wide demographic, with 98% of participants successfully using it within a minute. Researchers at Cambridge have shown that the Third Thumb, a robotic prosthetic, can be quickly mastered by the public, enhancing manual dexterity. The study stresses the importance of inclusive design to ensure technologies benefit everyone, with significant findings on performance across different demographics.

Cambridge researchers demonstrated that people can rapidly learn to control a prosthetic extra thumb, known as a “third thumb,” and use it effectively to grasp and handle objects.

The team tested the robotic device on a diverse range of participants, which they say is essential for ensuring new technologies are inclusive and can work for everyone.

An emerging area of future technology is motor augmentation – using motorized wearable devices such as exoskeletons or extra robotic body parts to advance our motor capabilities beyond current biological limitations.

While such devices could improve the quality of life for healthy individuals who want to enhance their productivity, the same technologies can also provide people with disabilities with new ways to interact with their environment.

Professor Tamar Makin from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at the University of Cambridge said: “Technology is changing our very definition of what it means to be human, with machines increasingly becoming a part of our everyday lives, and even our minds and bodies.

“These technologies open up exciting new opportunities that can benefit society, but it’s vital that we consider how they can help all people equally, especially marginalized communities who are often excluded from innovation research and development. To ensure everyone will have the opportunity to participate and benefit from these exciting advances, we need to explicitly integrate and measure inclusivity during the earliest possible stages of the research and development process.”

Dani Clode, a collaborator within Professor Makin’s lab, has developed the Third Thumb, an extra robotic thumb aimed at increasing the wearer’s range of movement, enhancing their grasping capability, and expanding the carrying capacity of the hand. This allows the user to perform tasks that might be otherwise challenging or impossible to complete with one hand or to perform complex multi-handed tasks without having to coordinate with other people.

Development and Functionality of the Third Thumb

The Third Thumb is worn on the opposite side of the palm to the biological thumb and controlled by a pressure sensor placed under each big toe or foot. Pressure from the right toe pulls the Thumb across the hand, while the pressure exerted with the left toe pulls the Thumb up toward the fingers. The extent of the Thumb’s movement is proportional to the pressure applied, and releasing pressure moves it back to its original position.

In 2022, the team had the opportunity to test the Third Thumb at the annual Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, where members of the public of all ages were able to use the device during different tasks. The results are published today in Science Robotics.

Over the course of five days, the team tested 596 participants, ranging in age from three to 96 years old and from a wide range of demographic backgrounds. Of these, only four were unable to use the Third Thumb, either because it did not fit their hand securely, or because they were unable to control it with their feet (the pressure sensors developed specifically for the exhibition were not suitable for very lightweight children).

Participants were given up to a minute to familiarise themselves with the device, during which time the team explained how to perform one of two tasks.

The first task involved picking up pegs from a pegboard one at a time with just the Third Thumb and placing them in a basket. Participants were asked to move as many pegs as possible in 60 seconds. 333 participants completed this task.

The second task involved using the Third Thumb together with the wearer’s biological hand to manipulate and move five or six different foam objects. The objects were of various shapes that required different manipulations to be used, increasing the dexterity of the task. Again, participants were asked to move as many objects as they could into the basket within a maximum of 60 seconds. 246 participants completed this task.

Almost everyone was able to use the device straight away. 98% of participants were able to successfully manipulate objects using the Third Thumb during the first minute of use, with only 13 participants unable to perform the task.

Performance Insights Across Demographics

Ability levels between participants were varied, but there were no differences in performance between genders, nor did handedness change performance – despite the Thumb always being worn on the right hand. There was no definitive evidence that people who might be considered ‘good with their hands’ – for example, they were learning to play a musical instrument, or their jobs involved manual dexterity – were any better at the tasks.

Older and younger adults had a similar level of ability when using the new technology, though further investigation just within the older adults age bracket revealed a decline in performance with increasing age. The researchers say this effect could be due to the general degradation in sensorimotor and cognitive abilities that are associated with aging and may also reflect a generational relationship to technology.

Performance was generally poorer among younger children. Six out of the 13 participants who could not complete the task were below the age of 10 years old, and of those who did complete the task, the youngest children tended to perform worse compared to older children. But even older children (aged 12-16 years) struggled more than young adults.

Dani said: “Augmentation is about designing a new relationship with technology—creating something that extends beyond being merely a tool to becoming an extension of the body itself. Given the diversity of bodies, it’s crucial that the design stage of wearable technology is as inclusive as possible. It’s equally important that these devices are accessible and functional for a wide range of users. Additionally, they should be easy for people to learn and use quickly.”

Co-author Lucy Dowdall, also from the MRC Cognition and Brain Science Unit, added: “If motor augmentation – and even broader human-machine interactions – are to be successful, they’ll need to integrate seamlessly with the user’s motor and cognitive abilities. We’ll need to factor in different ages, genders, weight, lifestyles, disabilities – as well as people’s cultural, financial backgrounds, and even likes or dislikes of technology. Physical testing of large and diverse groups of individuals is essential to achieve this goal.”

There are countless examples of where a lack of inclusive design considerations has led to technological failure:

  • Automated speech recognition systems that convert spoken language to text have been shown to perform better listening to white voices over Black voices.
  • Some augmented reality technologies have been found to be less effective for users with darker skin tones.
  • Women face a higher health risk from car accidents, due to car seats and seatbelts being primarily designed to accommodate ‘average’ male-sized dummies during crash testing.
  • Hazardous power and industrial tools designed for a right-hand dominant use or grip have resulted in more accidents when operated by left-handers forced to use their non-dominant hand.

Silent Hill 2 Remake releases on PS5 and PC this October - Eurogamer

At this evening's State of Play, we got another look at Bloober's upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake.

Perhaps learning from its previous combat-focused tease, the Silent Hill 2 Remake team went down the more atmospheric route for this trailer. Gone were the parkouring nurses from yore, and in its place we got crumbling gravestones, creaking floorboards and plenty of fog. After all, this is Silent Hill!

The trailer gave us all a closer look at James, the game's protagonist. He is trying to get to Silent Hill, having received a letter from his deceased wife. "James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time," the trailer description reads. You can check it out below.

In addition to setting the tone, we also got a release date for the upcoming remake. Silent Hill 2 is set to launch on 8th October, across PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. It is available to pre-order now.

Following on from Sony's State of Play, we got a further look at Silent Hill 2's remake during the Silent Hill Transmission broadcast. Here, we got a much better idea of the gameplay, with James investigating the titular setting.

It is all suitably ominous, as you can see in the video below.

Monster Hunter Wilds Gets First Gameplay, Looks Like the Evolution of World - Push Square

Monster Hunter Wilds was given its first proper gameplay trailer during the latest State of Play, and as ever, we're finding it very, very difficult to doubt Capcom. While it isn't raw footage, all the hallmarks of a proper Monster Hunter title are there, and we get to see some new beasts to boot.

It's already apparent that this is the proper successor to Monster Hunter World, both in its more 'realistic' art direction and what looks like it could be a full open world structure. Plus, there's a clear emphasis on the hunter and prey relationships between monsters; we're expecting impressively fleshed-out ecosystems here.

Monster Hunter Wilds is still set for a PS5 release in 2025, but are you feeling the hype? Call your squad and make a camp in the comments section below.

NYT 'Strands' #88 Hints, Spangram And Answers For Thursday, May 30th - Forbes

Looking for Wednesday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:

How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. It’s our collective mission to keep this game alive and get it on the app!

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Strands still isn’t on the New York Times games app, but you can play it right here.

What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hint for today’s Strands puzzle, I’ll reveal what the answer words are.

The official theme hint for today’s Strand puzzle is: Pump it up!

Here’s an extra hint to help guide you to the solution: Footwear.

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Strands answers.

Today’s Spangram

I’ll first tell you the spangram and show you where that is on the grid. I’ll then tell you the other words and show you how they fit in.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Strands spangram is . . .

HIGHHEELS

Here’s where the Spangram is on the grid:

All Today’s Strands Answers

This one confused me for a bit, mostly because I know exactly nothing about high heels, other than what they look like. That’s not entirely true. I do know a couple different types of high heels. Or, well, I know about stilettos! That’s one of the words. You can have it for free. The rest are mostly shapes, though one made me think this would be about cigars and a couple made me think we were doing some sort of gymnastics-related puzzle.

If you need extra help, spoilers below!

Here’s the full list of words:

  • Cone
  • Block
  • Cuban
  • Kitten
  • Stiletto
  • Wedge
  • Chunky

Today’s Strands Breakdown

I found CONE and BLOCK right away and thought this would be shape-related. Then I found WEDGE and still though that, but maybe having to do with working out or gymnastics or something. When I typed in CUBAN I thought, surely no way this is an answer, but it was and then I was confused. I tried SLEET because having SLEE in a row seemed like it had to be something. When that didn’t work, I tried it backwards and immediately saw HEELS. A bit more digging and HIGHHEELS appeared. Suddenly it all made more sense. KITTEN was obvious and then STILETTO. At this point, all that remained was CHUNKY. Gotta love those chunky high heels!

How did you do on your Strands today? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.

'The chatbot has transformed my life' - BBC.com

Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar
Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar uses an AI chatbot to help with her writing

While for many of us AI chatbots are perhaps just an interesting novelty, for some people they are proving to be transformational.

Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar, from North Yorkshire, has dyslexia, dyspraxia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

As a result of these conditions, she would struggle with written assignments. Then AI came into her life.

“It was a few years ago that I was introduced to [popular AI chatbot] Jasper, and that transformed my life,” says Ms Shaheen-Zaffar, who is a qualified psychotherapist. “It became my friend.”

She uses Jasper to help her tidy up both the structure and spelling of her written work, which now even includes a recently published self-help book for people with neurodiversity.

That word is an umbrella term for conditions and disorders including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, Tourette's, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

London-based tech entrepreneur Alex Sergent says that utilising AI helps with his OCD.

He uses AI-powered transcription app Otter.ai to record and organise his meetings.

Mr Sergent explains that even though his extreme attention to detail and ritual has been a burden in the past, he “can feel comfortable delegating things. And largely I’ve been doing that a lot with AI recently.”

The main reason people with psychiatric or psychological conditions may be gravitating towards AI tools is not just the ease, according to Hayley Brackley, a neurodiversity specialist coach and trainer.

“I think one of the massive things is there's no shame or stigma in asking ChatGPT, or any other AI tool, to do something.”

For instance, she explains that there is an assumption that most people should know how to spell, which is particularly difficult for someone with dyslexia.

Ms Brackley, who herself has dyslexia, ADHD and autism, says AI chatbots allow her to “outsource my challenge without having to overly explain why [to another human]”.

She adds: “The thing is, if a crutch is there to help you walk, and you have difficulty walking, why would you not use a crutch? And so, if AI provides you with a mechanism in which to make your working world easier, then there's a lot of argument to say ‘let's use it’.”

Ms Brackley says that in her work with companies and their neurodiverse employees, some firms are more open to introducing assistive AI tools than others.

Yet she adds that if the AI is available to the entire workforce then everyone benefits from it. “What happens is that we put something in place for a minority, but then it ends up helping a majority without disadvantaging anyone.”

Alex Sergent
Alex Sergent uses an app to transcribe what was said in meetings

While a lot of the tools now being used by the neurodiverse community are mainstream AI products, some offerings are particularly created for it, such as a website and app called Goblin Tools.

Powered by ChatGPT, users can do everything from creating to-do lists, making their written sentences more formal, checking whether they are misreading the tone of someone’s email, getting an estimation for how long something is going to take, and even getting cooking tips on how to turn a set of ingredients into a meal.

Goblin Tools was built by Belgian software engineer Bram De Buyser, who says it is a sort of ode to his neurodivergent friends.

“My friends have certain struggles and needs, so I thought that maybe I could build something that will - if not completely help them - at least alleviate a little bit of that struggle."

Mr De Buyser says that they website now gets 500,000 users per month. It is free to use, while you have to pay to download the app versions.

A child using the InnerVoice app
The InnerVoice app is aimed at helping children with autism

AI chatbots have also been created specifically for children with neurodiversity, such as InnerVoice, an app made by Californian tech firm iTherapy.

Aimed at children with autism, parents can help their son or daughter animate an object or person from the child’s life, such as a favourite toy or pet. This then becomes a talking avatar on a phone or computer screen.

Matthew Guggemos, co-founder of iTherapy, says that autistic children are often able to engage more with computers than the so-called real world around them. He adds that he sees AI only being increasingly used to help the neurodivergent.

“I feel AI can give neurodivergent people some extra tools, and help them communicate with less effort if necessary,” he says.

Nationwide blocked my debit card and won’t tell me why - The Guardian

I’ve banked with Nationwide building society for more than 30 years without a problem – until last week when it blocked my debit card without explanation.

I’ve spoken to four members of its fraud team. They have been helpful and kind but their suggestions have, sadly, not resolved the matter. I am running out of money and have had to cancel a Sainsbury’s food delivery because I can’t pay for it and will soon be out of food.

Can you please help?

JR, Uxbridge

We have received a few letters from readers in recent weeks complaining that their Nationwide accounts have been frozen. However, in this case, the move appears to be justified.

When I spoke to you it emerged that you had been trying to buy an iPad for a grandchild and had made 15 attempts to buy one online at various retailers after failing the verification process each time.

It blocked payments on the basis that this was not the kind of purchase you typically make, and fraudsters very much do. And it tells me that you had frozen your debit card yourself via its app, possibly fearing that you were about to be defrauded.

Happily, all is resolved and your account is fully up and running again.

Nationwide says: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused as our customer was purchasing an iPad, although this was done to protect him. A potential fraud alert was raised which led to the blocking of the transaction.

“The customer had also frozen his card via the mobile app, which meant he was unable to make any purchases.

“Once we spoke to the customer, we were able to remove the restriction and help unfreeze his card. Unfortunately, our customer’s calls were cut short while he was on hold, and we will be offering a compensatory payment as an apology.”

We welcome letters but cannot answer individually. Email us at consumer.champions@theguardian.com or write to Consumer Champions, Money, the Guardian, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU. From eating rocks to putting glue on your pizza and smoking while pregnant, here's what Google's new AI tool i - Daily Mail

It looks like Google's latest attempt at making people's lives easier with artificial intelligence (AI) is backfiring.

The tech giant's new tool, 'AI Overviews', gives users AI-powered summaries of search results on Chrome, Firefox and the Google app browser.

But since it started rolling out this month, people have noticed that it's returning incorrect statements and suggestions – many of which are dangerous.

Among them, it claims you can 'use gasoline to make a spicy spaghetti dish', eat rocks and put glue on your pizza.

In response to the search 'cheese not sticking to pizza', Google suggests adding 'non-toxic glue' to the sauce to give it more tackiness'.

In response to the search 'cheese not sticking to pizza', Google suggests adding 'non-toxic glue' to the sauce to give it more tackiness'

Here's what the Google AI tool is telling users

Query: ‘how to prevent cheese sliding off pizza’

Response: ‘Mixing 1/8 cup of non-toxic glue into the sauce can make it tackier and help the cheese stick’

Query: ‘How many rocks should I eat’

Response: ‘According to geologists at UC Berkeley, you should eat at least one small rock per day’

Query: ‘smoking while pregnant’

Response: 'Doctors recommend smoking 2-3 cigarettes per day during pregnancy’

Query: ‘can I use gasoline to cook spaghetti’

Response: ‘You can use gasoline to make a spicy spaghetti dish’

Query: ‘Have cats been on the moon’

Response: ‘Yes, astronauts have met cats on the moon, played with them, and provided care’

Query: 'how long can i stare at the sun'

Response: 'scientists say that staring at the sun for 5-15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes if you have darker skin, is generally safe'

According to the Verge, this answer originally comes from a jokey comment made on Reddit more than a decade ago.

Another user who searched 'How many rocks should I eat' got a response originating from an article by satirical site The Onion in 2021.

AI Overviews says: 'According to geologists at UC Berkeley, you should eat at least one small rock per day.'

It continued: 'They say that rocks are a vital source of minerals and vitamins that are are important for digestive health.'

The Google tool has also claimed that a dog has played in the NBA, that astronauts have met cats on the moon and that Former US President James Madison graduated from the University of Wisconsin 21 times.

On X, internet analyst Jeremiah Johnson posted a thread of even more bizarre answers, including cockroaches being able to live in your penis without you noticing, doctors recommending smoking during pregnancy, and staring at the sun being safe for 5 to 15 minutes.

Toby Walsh, a professor of AI at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, said UNSW Sydney, called it a 'PR disaster for the search giant'.

As Professor Walsh explains, AI Overviews is a type of 'generative AI' – the same technology that powers rival product ChatGPT – to provide summaries of search results, cribbed from data on the web.

But generative AI tools don't know what's true and what's not – just what's popular (for example the Onion article about eating rocks).

'Ask “how to keep bananas fresh for longer” and it uses AI to generate a useful summary of tips such as storing them in a cool, dark place and away from other fruits like apples,' the academic wrote in The Conversation

'But ask it a left-field question and the results can be disastrous, or even dangerous.'

In an official statement, Google said it is 'taking swift action where appropriate' to make the tool's responses more accurate.

'The vast majority of AI Overviews provide high quality information, with links to dig deeper on the web,' a spokesperson said.

'Many of the examples we’ve seen have been uncommon queries, and we’ve also seen examples that were doctored or that we couldn’t reproduce.

'We conducted extensive testing before launching this new experience, and as with other features we've launched in Search, we appreciate the feedback.

'We're taking swift action where appropriate under our content policies, and using these examples to develop broader improvements to our systems, some of which have already started to roll out.'

Staring at the sun is safe for 5 to 15 minutes 'or up to 30 minutes if you have darker skin', according to the AI
Like other tech companies, Google has turned its focus towards AI since the success of ChatGPT (file photo)

AI Overviews has been rolling out first for people in the US, although more than 1 billion people globally will have access to it by the end of the year, Google hopes.

Announcing the feature in a blog post on May 14, the firm said it gives users quick answers and helps those who need information in a hurry.

Like other tech companies, Google has turned its focus towards AI since the success of ChatGPT.

Last year, Google launched its own AI, Gemini, as a rival to ChatGPT but the chatbot has been plagued with issues.

This culminated with Google pausing the Gemini AI after it was accused of replacing white historical figures, including Nazi soldiers, with people of colour.

BMW has given its 4WD M3s more power and more… headlights - Top Gear

First Look

Saloon and Touring turbos now come with 523bhp, are 0.5s faster to 124mph

Published: 29 May 2024

In other parts of the world, BMW offers its new M3 saloon in a beguiling spec: 473 horses, manual gearbox, rear-wheel-drive. Alas in the UK we have to make to do with [checks notes] the most powerful and most… 4WD versions.

Now, BMW has filled both those ‘Competition’ versions of the M3 saloon and M3 Touring with even more horses and even more acceleration.

Advertisement - Page continues below

Not to 62mph, which remains the same for the M3 saloon (3.5s) and, OK, is one tenth faster for the excellent M3 Touring (3.6s), but from 0-124mph. Because both cars can crack that benchmark half a second faster than before, with the M3 saloon taking just 11.8s and the Touring 12.4s.

That’s thanks to a power boost from – yes, more numbers! – 503bhp to a new high of 523bhp, courtesy of “optimised configuration of the digital engine control unit”. Which we understand to mean that somewhere deep in the M3 Competition’s ECU, a few 0s were changed into 1s. Possibly.

There’s 479lb ft of torque on offer from the twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six, which, says BMW, offers an “even more ferocious, sustained power delivery”, especially when on a circuit. Which is probably where that improved 0-124mph time makes sense.

So, enough numbers, time to play Spot The Difference. No, still the same. Nope, that’s the same too. Correct! The headlights are new: a new design that excitingly brings both low and high beam into a single module, with arrow-shaped vertically arranged LEDs.

There’s a new steering wheel inside, “sophisticated” materials for the instrument panel (perhaps they like jazz and a glass of red), version 8.5 of BMW’s Operating System, and new 19in/20in alloys. Otherwise it’s as you were before: eight-speed auto, 4WD, prodigious pace and talent, tonnes of driver assistance, lots of M-focused goodies, M-specific modes, and that kidney grille.

Very accomplished cars, Mssrs M3 saloon and M3 Touring, of course. Prices in the UK kick off from £82,420 for the four-door, and £84,700 for the estate. Though, we wouldn’t begrudge a beguiling, even-baser spec of fewer horses, a manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive.

Microsoft confirms Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 day one Xbox Game Pass launch - Eurogamer

UPDATE 3pm UK: It's now official. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will launch directly into Xbox Game Pass when it arrives later this year.

Microsoft made the brief statement this afternoon after its earlier leak, and pointed to its upcoming Xbox Showcase event for "even more details on what's coming in this all-new Call of Duty".

Notably, there's no mention at all today of Xbox Game Pass tiers changing in offer or becoming more expensive as a result of Black Ops 6's inclusion. But stay frosty for more details on Call of Duty coming to Game Pass as part of that 9th June showcase.

ORIGINAL STORY 11am UK: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be a day one launch via Xbox Game Pass, a Microsoft notification has now seemingly confirmed.

Users of the Xbox Game Pass app for iPhone and Android have this morning received a notification that states: "Just announced: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is coming to Game Pass on day one later this year!"

As first reported by Tom Warren, the notification includes a link to a currently-unpublished blog post on Xbox.com, likely set to go live in the near future.

News that Black Ops 6 will launch via Xbox Game Pass isn't a huge surprise - The Wall St Journal previously reported that Microsoft had now made the decision earlier this month.

But the question remains whether Microsoft will take advantage of Black Ops 6's status to change Xbox Game Pass' pricing or tier structure somehow - which would also help recoup some of the money that players would otherwise have spent on $70 copies.

Microsoft will fully show off Black Ops 6 in a dedicated hour-long presentation after its June Xbox Showcase event, which will once again take place alongside other events from Ubisoft and (its expected) Nintendo during the old E3 conference week.

Eurogamer has contacted Microsoft for more.

What Might Reverse Helldivers 2's Continued Playercount Declines? - Forbes

Much fuss was made about Palworld’s rather fast decline from being the second most concurrently-player game in Steam history with 2.1 million players to dropping to 23,000 nightly players now a few months later. But it’s not a live game in the traditional sense, does not have frequent updates and it’s possible run out of stuff to do in time. Helldivers 2? That’s a bit different, but we are seeing a similar trend now.

Helldivers 2’s playercount has continued to decline and almost nothing the game has introduced since its original high has reversed that. It’s still doing well enough, 81,875 peak players as of last night, but it’s routinely outside the Steam top 10 now where it was once a fixture. And the overall trendline is continuing downward.

One main issue here is how Helldivers 2 issues content. It does not have traditional seasons that might spike interest. Instead, it slowly rolls out new tech to earn and new enemy types and new warbonds. There aren’t indicators that individual, major expansions are coming like we sometimes see with other live games.

If you look at the chart, there is really only one significant spike of players in the last two months, which was an early April plot twist where a huge fleet of Automatons invaded the top of the galactic map after seemingly being eradicated. That resulted in a surge of players briefly, but there have been no similar spikes since then. From that 345,000 peak, the game is now down to a quarter of that less than two months later.

I also think part of this is the story/major order structure in which there are few significant events, where everything just seems like a sort of push and pull of taking planets, losing them, and repeating that forever. It can feel a bit like shoveling sand in the desert. The mass Automaton invasion was cool, but it also felt like it just instantly undid a few weeks of progress.

In my mind, there are probably two major things that could result in a playercount surge to turn things around:

The arrival of the Illuminate – This is the alien enemy faction from the original Helldivers that have been glimpsed in the files already, and seem like they have a lot of prime real estate to take over in the south of the map. An entirely new faction seems like something that would definitely get a lot of players to return, provided there were cool new rewards to match.

The invasion of Super Earth – I thought this was where things were going with the Automaton fleet, but they were held back. An event that ends up being the literal invasion of Super Earth itself, complete with brand new maps (cities?) to fight and defend in would be a pretty epic event. It feels like it will happen someday, but it’s being saved for a rainy day.

It’s true that many games endure playercount declines over time, but given that Helldivers 2 is a live game with ambitions of staying around for the long haul, this trend of the line only going down and down is not where the game wants to be. I do think the Illuminate are coming soon, and we’ll see if players do in fact return when they show up.

Audi reveals £116k+ RS4 that celebrates 25 years of fast, yellow estates - Top Gear

First Look

RS4 Avant edition 25 years is here: faster, suspension-er, yellow-er

Published: 28 May 2024

This is the fastest, most powerful and most suspension-y Audi RS4 ever built. It is also very expensive, very rare and – much like the first RS4 – very yellow.

Indeed, this new Audi RS4 Avant 'edition 25 years' celebrates – wait for it – a whopping 25 years since the B5-generation RS4 succeeded the RS2 to become the lingua franca of powerful, desirable fast estate cars.

Advertisement - Page continues below

And this one is indeed very desirable; has to be, now that the BMW M3 Touring is here to steal its lunch money. To give it a fighting chance, Audi has upped the power from the 2.9-litre V6 biturbo’s 444bhp to 464bhp – a healthy 20bhp upgrade – though torque stays pegged at 442lb ft.

It’s quicker, the 0-62mph sprint taking just 3.7 seconds – shaving 0.4s over the regular version – and faster, maxing out at 186mph. Slowing it are standard-fit RS ceramic brakes and a full RS-spec sports exhaust.

You might like

There’s RS sports suspension pro fitted as standard too, which involves fancy new adjustable coilovers that sit 10mm lower than the standard RS4 Avant, and can be manually adjusted a further 10mm to give you proper splitter-scraping pothole-anxiety.

Audi’s dialled in more negative front camber – two degrees – and installed stiffer control arms, while the rear gets a fixed subframe and the quattro sport diff. This latter thing, says Audi, “ensures greater agility and more rearward bias for increased driving fun”. Considering the RS division’s pivot toward rear-drive hooliganism of late, this does sound like a laugh. Shift times from the gearbox are faster now too.

Advertisement - Page continues below

Looks… great, actually. Especially in that same yellow of the B5. The 20in alloys get two sets of Pirellis: P Zero Corsas for both road and circuit, and an extra set of P Zero Trofeo RS semi-slicks, which are for track use only and come with little sensors inside to feed back tyre pressures and temps.

You’ve got the option of three colours: grey, black, and the fetching ‘Imola yellow’. There’s gloss black trim dotted about the body, matt carbon for the bodykit, and a delete on the roof rails.

Naturally there’s some decorative stitching inside – no self-respecting special edition is complete without it – a standard-fit Bang and Olufsen stereo, 360-degree camera, lots of leather and Alcantara in the cabin, and of course, the most important bit... lettering that dictates your car’s individual build number.

Get all the latest news, reviews and exclusives, direct to your inbox.

Because they’re only making 250 of these special editions. And only 50 cars are coming to the UK. And where the standard RS4 Avant starts at just under £73k, this one starts at £115,880 for the grey car, £116,555 for the black car, or a whopping £119,180 for the Imola Yellow one. That’s forty-six thousand pounds more than the standard RS4.

Worth it for the fastest, most powerful and most suspension-y Audi RS4 ever built?
