Rare Apple trainers with vintage rainbow logo go up for sale in US - Sky News

An ultra-rare pair of Apple branded trainers have gone up for sale for a whopping $50,000 (£38,722).

The shoes were custom-made for company employees in the 1990s and given away at a sales conference.

They feature the vintage rainbow Apple logo, which was adopted in 1977 to celebrate the launch of the firm's first computer that supported colours and remained until 1999.

Auctioneer Sotheby's describes the sneakers - made by Omega Sports - as among "the most obscure in existence".

They are "highly coveted" on the resale market, having never reached the public, it adds.

Its asking price comfortably tops Apple's existing products, from its cheapest iPhone to most expensive Mac.

They do, at least, come with a spare pair of fetching red laces and are in their original box.

More on Apple

"The shoes' condition is consistent with age," says the listing.

"Imperfections include yellowing around the midsoles and glue, and light marks on the toe boxes."

Should you be tempted, you'd better be sure you want them, as they are not eligible for return.

While expensive, the trainers don't come close to the price fetched by an original iPhone at a recent US auction.

The first generation 4GB model sold for more than £145,000, well up on the device's original price of $499 (about £269) back in 2007.
