Call of Duty maps ‘are finely honed’
Call of Duty: Vanguard hits shelves this week and in anticipation of its launch, we sat down with Sledgehammer Games’ studio GM Greg Palstra for the lowdown on the multiplayer.
“[Tactical destruction] is very deliberate in where we use it,” explains Palstra.
“And that’s because the Call of Duty maps are…finely honed.
“Every sight line we know what’s going on, and we spend a ton of time making sure that all of our main pathways and everything else are there perfect.
“So the reactive environments are used in very specific, dedicated ways to open up new lines of sight, or open up new pathways within the map.

Huge GTA 6 leak debunked: It’s ‘just my opinion' says tipster
Gaming outlets in the US and UK are going crazy over a GTA 6 leak that's nothing but one journalist's speculation on the game.
French journalist Chris Klippel of R* Mag has a solid track record with leaks.
So when a couple of his recent videos on his YouTube channel about Grand Theft Auto 6 mentioned a missed 2020 release date, and setting for the game, the media pounced on it.
Unfortunately, what Klippel posted wasn't a leak at all and simply his speculation on the game and it's development.
NeoGAF appears to be the source of the snafu, and reels off 'facts' that Klippel had dropped about the title including:
- GTA 6 being scrapped and development starting over
- GTA 6 missing its slated 2020 announcement date
- GTA 6 taking place in two time periods
The thread states that – according to Klippel – after Dan Houser's departure, GTA 6 had been "restarted", although the plot had already been changes before he actually left.
Fortnite world first as player hits level 1000 and sets new record
A FORTNITE player has just set the record for the highest level achieved in the game yet.
YouTuber Rages Revenge hit the milestone this week, hitting level 1000 since starting Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8.
They're the first Fortnite player to have reached the loft heights of the max Battle Pass level.
The game resets player levels at the start of every season, so everyone is grinding their way up together.
Season 8 has been criticised for bring stingy on the XP, with Epic Games acknowledging the complaints.
There have been a few glitches in the game that have allowed players to make faster progress but it's been a slog.
So the achievement of hitting level 1000 is not to be sniffed at.
New zombie artifact abilities
According to PCGames, the new artifact abilities are:
- Energy Mine
- Aether Shroud
- Ring of Fire
- Frost Blast
More on the Vanguard Warzone integration
The new Caldera map drops at the beginning of Season 1 on December 3, or December 2 if you own Vanguard.
Warzone itself is getting renamed 'Warzone Pacific' and we'll see a dedicated playlist in Vanguard Royale.
Vanguard Plunder mode will drop soon after, and there's all sorts of vehicles to play with across both modes.
But that doesn't mean the ones you've accumulated prior are being phased out. All of the original Warzone vehicles and skins aren't going anywhere.
All of the Operators and Calling Cards from Black Ops Cold War and Modern Warfare will be available, as well as cross-progression and Seasonal Prestige.
Vanguard players get EXCLUSIVE first access to a brand new Warzone map
After Vanguard's launch, players will be dropping into Call of Duty: Warzone Pacific with a lush and verdant map to boot.
Caldera is described as "just the beginning of Vanguard’s full integration into Warzone."
It's around the same size and its design has been "informed by two years of research and community feedback."
It won't be available until December, but there is a way to get exclusive first access for 24 hours.
All you have to do is pick up a copy of Call of Duty: Vanguard and you'll be able to dive in from 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm GMT on December 2.
Everyone else will have to wait until 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm GMT on December 3.
New playlist and other additions
The hotly-anticipated new season also features a new Battle Pass, new iconic WWII weapons, Multiplayer maps and more.

Warnzone release date, new map and vehicles explained
Unsurprisingly, Warzone is back with a fresh lick of paint for the release of Vanguard.
A new map drops at the beginning of Season 1 on December 3, or December 2 if you own Vanguard.
The new location is based in the Pacific: an entirely new island called Caldera.
It's apparently roughly the same size as Verdansk, with more than 200 points of interest for players to explore.
You'll explore a variety of locations such as beaches, forests, a small river settlement populated by huts, and even a dormant volcano.
Players will also have access to new vehicles with which to survey up their surroundings.
They include AA trucks and even propeller aircraft – a first for Warzone.
Activision has said the map's design is "based on two years of research and listening to the community".
Ahead of Caldera's release, a number of special events in Verdansk will play out to gear players up for the new season.

Call of Duty: The latest
Jumbo jet loaded with PS5 stock arrived at Heathrow
The rare devices - being flogged for £1,000 on eBay - are in desperately short supply and the company has struggled to get them to fans.
The consoles sell out as fast as they arrive with retailers - with no UK stores having stock last night.
But in a bid to placate gamers, jets weighing 100 tonnes have been specially chartered to get the PS5s here.
A third dedicated cargo flight arrived at Heathrow on Flight KE9503 from Seoul yesterday. It originally took off from Tianjin in north-west China.
Korean Air Cargo’s Boeing 747 jet touched down at 2.30pm in London, stacked high with almost 50 pallets full of the gaming kit.
Twelve articulated lorries were needed to ferry the PS5s from the airport’s cargo hub to distribution centres around the UK - with just four of the monster three-metre-wide pallets fitting in each truck.
It was the third chartered jumbo delivery of PlayStation 5s to land in the UK - with two identical flights arriving on Monday and Thursday last week

- Thunderhead Submachine Gun: includes special Tracer Rounds and eight pre-configured attachments. This is an accuracy-focused Submachine Gun. Increase fire rate with extended mag (9mm ammo), short barrel to increases fire rate slightly and damage range significantly, and recoil-boosting muzzle that uses that force to

Forza Horizon 5 release date – when is it out and supported platforms?
Forza Horizon 5 is currently slated for release on November 9, 2021.
However, you’ll be able to play it before then if you cough up some extra cash.
Buyers of the Premium Edition will be given early access to the game on November 4.
The game is currently in development for Microsoft platforms only.
That means you’ll be able to get it on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series X, Xbox One and Windows 10.
But PS5 and PS4 owners will be out of luck.
It’s no surprise, of course: Forza titles are published by Microsoft’s own Xbox Game Studios.
Explained: What is Call of Duty?
Call of Duty is one of the world’s most popular video game franchises published by Activision.
The original game, released in 2003, was set during the Second World War, and Vanguard is its the 18th title.
Although there is a Modern Warfare spin-off series set in the near modern day most of the CoD games are set in different theatres of war during the 1940s.
Vanguard is set at the end of the war with a story line about the emergence of the special forces as the world faces a new threat.

The release times for North America are listed below:
- 9pm PDT
- 10pm MDT

Call of Duty: Vanguard file size
Call of Duty games are notoriously large when it comes to file size, causing quite the problem for console players with small hard drives.
However, Vanguard's install launch size is going to be slimmed down by 30% to 50% compared to previous instalments in the series. Although that only goes for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Activision has listed the approximate file sizes for install, pre-load, and space needed to play the game so you can start making room or invest in a new SSD now.
More gaming news
Zombies mode doesn't feature a campaign
To rub salt into the would for Zombies fans, the mode is launching without a campaign either.
But on the plus side, we know it's definitely coming; it's just delayed.
"Starting on December 2nd, new Zombies content & features will begin to roll out in Vanguard, including a new Objective, additional Covenants, new weapons, Zombies Season Challenges, holiday-themed updates, and more," reads the blog post.
"Players will also encounter some other surprise elements later in Season One that will set the stage for our upcoming Main Quest."
Apparently the main quest will be "tied to the arrival of an unexpected ally after Season One, which will further expand the narrative of the Dark Aether, and reveal more details about the characters and entities that players will have encountered thus far."
So in short, no round-based zombies (at all, possibly) and no Zombies campaign at launch.
There should be plenty of other content to keep you entertained but if you're a diehard zombie fan, the news could be a blow.
COD: Vanguard operators
Operator-wise, Vanguard will launch with 12, including the four from the campaign:
The Operators are spread over four Task Forces, and each one is hugely customisable:
- Hellhounds
- Daniel Take Yatsu
- Wade Jackson
- Halima Zambardi
- Sentinal
- Constanze Trude Muller
- Arthur Kingsley
- Padmavati Balan
- Barbarian
- Lucas Riggs
- Roland Zeimet
- Beatrice Mercier
- Shadow
- Shigenori Ota
- Polina Petrova
- Solange Hardewijk
- Hellhounds
Multiplayer mode features new Combat Pacing system
A new Combat Pacing system switches up the multiplayer experience even more.
You can opt for Quick Play to get a taste of everything, or pick the one that suits you best:
- Tactical: Tactical Combat Pacing always has a 12-player maximum in matches for traditional 6v6 play
- Assault: A middle ground between Tactical and Blitz featuring matches with 14 to 36 players (7v7 to 18v18) depending on the size of the map
- Blitz: Matches here range from 16 to 48 players (8v8 to 24v24) depending on the size of the map
Tactical offers the usual pacing CoD fans will be familiar with. Assault is "balanced" and gives players "room to breathe and a lot of targets to kill."
Blitz is described as "high-action" at "frenetic levels" so feel free to dabble in all three to find your favourite.
