343 Already Knows ‘Halo Infinite’ Multiplayer Battle Pass Progression Must Get Better - Forbes

Everyone is thrilled to be hopping into Halo Infinite multiplayer three weeks early after Microsoft’s surprise anniversary announcement yesterday. But as people have started to play the game, a common refrain has formed already.

“This is a lot of fun, but what’s wrong with this battle pass?”

Because this is a shooter that exists in 2021, Halo Infinite now must adopt the seasonal battle pass model if it wants to keep pace and generate revenue. But while it has the fundamentals of combat down, the battle pass system, where progress is made only by completing challenges, is exhausting players even on day one here.

The thing is, 343 already knows this system is bad. This was a complaint even during the technical flights, where there was a little mini battle pass you could work on. But now that the full one is live, 100 ranks with 160+ items, players are seeing just how daunting it really is.

The problem is that the battle pass only gives out XP through challenges, meaning there is almost no bearing at all in terms of XP giving for how well you perform in a match. Yes, every so often you’re given a kill objective or a win objective, but this is very, very unlike most games, where if you say, go nuts and put up a ton of kills in a game, that’s worth a lot more XP than someone who stumbles through a match barely doing anything.

Halo Infinite has a daily challenge that is essentially just 100 XP for every two matches (at least that’s the only one I’ve seen so far), meaning the “pure” grind with no other challenges is 20 games for a single level in the battle pass. Weekly challenges give more XP, but they can be tied to some things you have no control over, like randomly getting into a specific match type, or landing a map that has a certain type of weapon you need for a kill.

Again, 343 already has taken feedback on this, and they say they’re working on improving the system. Here’s what they said back when the technical flights were happening:

"While we understand the community's feedback around wanting a steady drip of match XP and more ways to earn XP for the Battle Pass, we are optimistic that the system available at launch will give players adequate means of continually having something to accomplish and a means to progress," 343 said. "Looking further ahead beyond launch, we expect these systems to evolve in direct partnership with player feedback."

So in short, they said they weren’t changing anything by launch, but they would evolve the system in the future. But I don’t think their optimism here was well-placed, as surprise, everyone still hates the challenge-only system. It often doesn’t feel like you’re making progress, because if you’re not in X mode with Y weapon available you may have literally zero things to accomplish in a match other than getting one of two match completions for a daily challenge. It’s obviously frustrating to throw up a 20 kill game and potentially get the same amount of progress as someone with 3 kills. I can’t think of another game in this genre that has a system this limited in XP in place.

Perhaps this will start to feel a little better as XP boosts are unlocked, and things like events or double XP weekends start. But even now, there’s a special reward for completing all weekly challenges, so players feel like they have to engage with the current system, lest they miss some cool cosmetic (this week, a gold visor).

This current season lasts until May 2022, so that would be half a year under this current system if no changes are made. I really hope something shifts before then, but if not, I guess we’ll just have to concentrate on having fun while playing, and trying to ignore the unrewarding grind system currently in place.
