Pro Max unveiled alongside new Apple Watch and iPad - The Sun

A NEW year, a new iPhone – with brand new colour options to enjoy.

The iPhone 13 was unveiled at a special Apple event on September 14.

It boasts a powerful A15 chip and improvements to the camera, and comes in four variants: iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 is available to pre-order from Friday, September 17.

The Apple Watch 7 is also upping the ante on the fitness front this time around, by detecting when you're riding a bike and prompting you to start your workout.

Meanwhile, the new iPad 2021 houses the new A13 bionic chip, making it 20% faster in "every aspect".

  • IOS 15 RELEASE DATE ANNOUNCED – SORT OF

While Apple did not mention the release date of iOS 15, Apple said in a press release for its new iPad that the iPadOS 15 operating system will arrive on Monday, 20 September.

It is usually released alongside the latest iOS for the iPhone, so it’s safe to assume that iOS 15 will also come out on that date.

  • TOUGH STUFF!

Apple says the new model is the most durable so far.

    There’s a new crack-resistant crystal cover.

And it’s dust-proof and water-resistant – more so than any other model.

  • SPEED BOOST

The new iPhone 13 is powered by Apple’s brand new A15 processor.

It’s a custom built chip with a 6-core CPU (four of which are high-efficiency cores).

And the processor is built on a 5nm process, which means more transistors can be squeezed onto the chip.

In fact, Apple says it’s got 15billion transistors – they’re the tiny electronic switches that allows computing to happen.

More transistors on a chip generally means more computing potential.

So expect the iPhone 13 to be wildly fast. Even speedier than the very nippy iPhone 12!

  • I-SEE!

Face ID now fits into a 20% smaller space – slightly reducing the notch.

There’s a bigger battery (thanks to some internal re-engineering).

Apple has also created a smaller version of the iPhone 13 called the iPhone 13 Mini.

This is a similar format to last year’s iPhone 12.

Peak brightness on the iPhone 13’s screen is 1,200 nits – making outdoor use easy, even on sunny days.

Apple says the display has a high contrast ratio, so you can see true blacks.

That’s courtesy of a custom-built Apple OLED screen.

  • WHAT’S NEW WITH THE iPHONE 13?

Base storage has doubled from 64GB to 128GB, and there’s a new top-tier model with a whopping 1TB of space on board.

And it comes in four variants: iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 is available to pre-order from Friday, September 17.

All four models will then start shipping (and turn up in stores) from Friday, September 24.

  • PRO GO!

The iPhone 13 Pro has a 6.1 inch screen, rising to 6.7 inch for the Pro Max.

It starts at $999, or $1,099 for the Pro Max.

    This year, there’s a new 1TB storage option – in addition to 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options.

Pre-orders are live from Friday for the iPhone 13, all of which are available from September 24.

  • PICK N' CHOOSE

There are four colour options available for the new iPhone – including a new blue option.

The notch is smaller thanks to a reduction in the Face ID module, giving you more screen to enjoy.

There’s IP68 water resistance, a new display, and an improved camera system.

It’s also powered by Apple’s powerful new A15 Bionic chip – as seen in the standard iPhone 13.

  • C ME!

Apple has switched iPad Mini to a USB-C connection.

This is in line with the iPad Pro and MacBooks, and is an increasingly common cable.

It means the iPhone is looking increasingly isolated with its Lightning connector.

AND the new iPad Mini supports 5G internet – if you pay for a cellular model. Huzzah!

  • IT PAYS TO BE IN THE UK

Apple's top-end iPhone model has had a price cut for TWO years in a row in Britain.

Each year Apple has shaved £50 off the price of the high-end Pro model – including for this year's iPhone 13 Pro.

    • iPhone 13 Pro – £949

It sports an 8.3-inch liquid retina display while retaining the same compact footprint as the previous model.

  • APPLE QUIETLY SCRAPS THREE BELOVED IPHONE MODELS AFTER LAST NIGHT’S IPHONE 13 EVENT

Unsurprisingly, last year's iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max met the chopping block.

They're now totally gone from the Apple website – unless you're willing to buy a refurbished model.

However, the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 are both still available to buy, albeit with discounts.

That's not all: Apple has also killed off an older smartphone.

The iPhone XR – launched in 2018 as a "cheaper" model – is no longer available.

  • WHO HAS THE BEST BLACK FRIDAY DEALS ON IPHONES?

Phone deals are always subjective – some people prioritise low monthly costs; others want to pay as little upfront as possible; others still are after data boosts.

Whatever’s most important to you, we suggest you take a look at this selection of leading retailers:

    • Fonehouse – here
    • Mobiles.co.uk – here
    • Carphone Warehouse – here
    • Affordable Mobiles – here

Don’t forget to check network-specific deals from the likes of ThreeO2EE and Vodafone.

  • EXPLAINED: WILL THERE BY BLACK FRIDAY DEALS ON THE iPHONE 13?

We doubt it. While the iPhone 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max and 13 Mini will have hit shelves by that point, we’re not expecting any contracts that you might class as deals per se.

Similarly, it’s all-but-impossible that Apple will reduce prices on a series of handsets that have only been on sale for a couple of months.

  • EXPLAINED: IPHONE 13 PRICE LIST IN FULL

Here’s the starting prices of all the new iPhone 13 models:

    iPhone 13 Mini - $699 (around £505)

    iPhone 13 - $799 (around £580)

    iPhone 13 Pro - $999 (around £725)

    iPhone 13 Pro Max - $1,099 (around £800)

  • WATCHING TIME

One of the biggest announcements tonight could be the Apple Watch Series 7.

This mystery device could feature a new design – possibly squarer, in line with newer iPhone and iPad models.

A faster chip powering the device looks certain.

And there will inevitably new health and fitness features, but they remain a mystery for now.

There was early talk of a blood sugar monitor being built into the Apple Watch 7, but this may not arrive until the Series 8 in 2022.

  • SNAP HAPPY

Apple says the iPhone 13 has the most advanced dual-camera system yet.

The snapper gathers 47% more light, apparently.

Apple showed off some examples of low-light photography that looked very impressive.

The camera system also includes an ultra-wide snapper, for those really broad shots.

On video, there’s a new Cinematic Mode.

This lets you adjust focus between people and objects while filming in a very cinematic way – this is called Rack Focus.

    The examples look extremely good.

Also, here’s a quick recap on the new A15 chip…

  • SUPER SNAPPER

Apple is talking up huge improvements in low-light photography.

That means “you’ll get beautiful photos in any situation”, according to Apple.

There’s also better astrophotography when shooting the night sky with a tripod, as rumoured.

Apple has also added a new Macro Photography mode, letting you magnify subjects with a minimum distance of 2cm.

  • IPHONE 13 HAS NEW ‘SPACE MODE’ THAT TAKES AMAZING PICS OF THE NIGHT SKY

The new smartphone was unveiled last night – with a faster processor, improved camera and double the storage.

But one quiet improvement was only briefly mentioned during the Apple event.

Apple has actually improved astrophotography on the iPhone 13 Pro with a number of tricks.

This capability already existed in the iPhone, but it's now better with iPhone 13 Pro.

Night Mode lets you take photos in the dark without using flash by having an AI automatically brighten your snaps for you.

  • GET THAT JUICE: iPHONE 13 PRO MAX HAS LONGEST EVER BATTERY LIFE

The iPhone 13 Pro Max also has the longest battery life ever in an iPhone.

Compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro Max users should have 2.5 hours longer battery life throughout the day.

Users of the iPhone 13 Pro should get 1.5 hours more battery life than iPhone 12 Pro users.
