Hackers have reportedly stolen the source code for FIFA 21 and the Frostbite Engine amid a major intrusion at EA. As first reported by Vice, some 780gb of data has been stolen and is now being advertised for sale.
EA confirmed the breach in a statement to Vice, saying that it is investigating a "recent incident of intrusion" into their network.
"We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy. Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation."
The Frostbite Engine is the tech that powers the majority of EA's major games, from Madden NFL to Battlefield 2042.
In addition to the FIFA 21 and Frostbite Engine source code, hackers also reportedly stole EA software development kits and development tools. EA is the latest publisher to be victimized by a major hack, with Capcom and CD Projekt also suffering major intrusions over the past year.
IGN has reached out to EA and will update this story with any new information.
