Emergency alert to make Android phones and tablets go off in national emergency test today - Leeds Live

Emergency alerts are being sent to mobile phones today as part of a UK-wide Government test

Android users may experience siren-like alerts coming out of their phones between 1pm and 2pm today on Tuesday, June, 22.

A trial-run of the planned emergency system, designed to alert people to imminent danger through phones and tablets, is taking place across the UK this afternoon.

The Government website says testing is taking place on some mobile phone networks but does not specify which customers could be affected.

However, it does state that if you own an android device, there is a chance you will get a test alert and your phone or tablet could make a loud siren sound.

The Emergency Alerts service, being put together by the Government, is expected to launch fully later this summer.

The alerts, which are broadcast from mobile phone masts, are designed to be activated if there is a danger to life nearby.

Phones or tablets within range will be able to pick up the warning, which could also come with written advice on how to stay safe.

You may get an alert today if you live in, or travel through, a test area.

The Government website states: "Emergency Alerts is a new service from the UK government. It’s expected to launch in summer 2021.

"Emergency alerts will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.

"In an emergency, your phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe."
