Forza Horizon 5 Announced, Takes the Series to Mexico - E3 2021 - IGN - IGN

Xbox and Playground Games have announced Forza Horizon 5, which takes the genre-leading open-world racing series to Mexico for what’s described as the “the largest, most diverse Horizon ever.” It is scheduled to launch on November 9, 2021. Forza Horizon 5 was revealed during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase as part of this week’s E3 2021.

Forza Horizon 5 features a world which stretches from an intimidating, snow-covered active volcano – described as the highest point ever in a Horizon game and boasting “geology detail implemented with precision accuracy using photogrammetry data captured on location” – to idyllic beaches, and everything in between, including rugged mountain ranges, open desert, dense rainforest filled with ancient ruins, and the beautiful and colourful city of Guanajuato. Guanajuato is an undulating city of narrow and twisting alleys and streets, quaint plazas, and a fascinating network of underground tunnels, and was one of the sites that Forza Horizon collaborator Ken Block and the Hoonigan team shot a segment of Gymkhana Ten, the 2018 edition of Block’s viral stunt-driving series.

Forza Horizon 5 will feature a new Expedition mode that encourages exploration, new minigames, and a new suite of custom creation tools called the Events Lab. Events Lab is described as an “incredible new toolset that allows you to create your own races, game modes, and gameplay experiences” where players can “customise everything, right down to the fundamental rules of the game.” Modes like The Eliminator, the battle royale-inspired racing showdown mode added to Forza Horizon 4 in late 2019, will be part of Forza Horizon 5 at launch.

“Forza Horizon 5 is the largest, most fun, and most beautiful open world we’ve ever built,” says creative director Mike Brown. “And it will truly be an astounding showcase for the Xbox Series consoles when it comes to Xbox Game Pass this November 9th.”

Forza Horizon 5 is the first time the globetrotting Horizon festival has returned to North America since the original Forza Horizon in 2012, which was set in Colorado in the United States.

IGN’s in-depth look at Forza Horizon 5 and interview with creative director Mike Brown reveals much more about the size of the map, its amazing new weather systems, what Playground Games learnt from fans of Forza Horizon 4, and the key motivations for choosing Mexico which, according Brown, is “one of those countries that almost feels like it’s the whole world in one country.”
