PS5 release latest – Playstation 5 on sale TODAY at 8am with Curry’s, BT and Amazon stocking as well as GAME p - The Sun

THE wait is over!

The Playstation 5 went on sale in the UK at 8am this morning - and if it's anything like last week's launch of the XBox Series X and S, you can expect consoles to sell out extremely fast.

Those fortunate enough to have secured pre-orders from GAME will in theory be able to collect their consoles in person between 8am and 2pm, although some GAME stores didn't open until 30 minutes later.

If you've not yet bagged a pre-order, chances are your morning will be spent scouring the internet looking for places where PS5s are still in stock.

Don't worry, though, you can follow all the latest news and in-stock locations here on this live blog throughout the day.

The Sun’s tech editor Sean Keach will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest PlayStation news throughout the day, including deals, fan reaction, tips and more.

And you can read Sean's review of the new console, here.

  • DUTY CALLS

Many of you will be scrambling to play the latest Call of Duty game.

Black Ops Cold War has been out for just shy of a week – and players are already racing through the Campaign and Multiplayer levels.

If you want to play on PS5, you'll be in for a wait.

The total file size for Call of Duty Cold War on PS5 is a staggering 133GB.

That's most of your day spent downloading, even on a decent internet connection.

It's a cracker of a game though…when you eventually get on!

  • CURRYS CONUNDRUM

It's looking increasingly unlikely you'll be able to buy a PS5 from Currys.

The queue now stands at 83,000 and rising as the retailer warns of “huge demand”.

Sorry, folks – get ready for Amazon at noon…

  • ARGOS CHAOS

Argos has sold out entirely of the PlayStation 5 proper.

But its PlayStation landing page still lists stock for the Digital Edition.

However, clicking through is coming up with an error page for now.

It's worth keeping an eye on in case the website starts working again…

  • BIRDS OF A FEATHER

You'd rightly wonder what the differences are between the two PS5 models.

The main one is price: the all-digital PS5 costs £100 less.

That's because it ships without a disc tray.

And this means you'll also find it's a bit slimmer around the waist when standing vertically.

If you're strapped for cash or cabinet space, the all-digital model is the way to go.

  • QUEUE MADNESS!

Although Currys has listed as having stock, you might now struggle to get a unit.

“We are seeing an unprecedented demand for our amazing tech. Please hold on and we’ll get you in soon,” Currys warned.

The current queue stands at close to 40,000, and is constantly growing.

Thankfully, more stock will turn up on Amazon at noon – so ready your clicking finger for then.

  • PLAY BACK…

Can you play PS4 games on your PS5? YES!

Sony says more than 99% of the 4,000+ games for PS4 will also work on PS5.

Some games will see increased loading speeds on the PS5, as well as improved or more stable frame rates.

For some titles, you'll be able to upgrade to a special PS5 version of the game at no extra cost.

Examples include Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

However, others may incur a charge.

  • CURRY IN A HURRY

Currys STILL appears to have some stock online.

However, the website is now loading very slowly, and has begun queueing users.

We're seeing numbers in the hundreds, and even thousands, as desperate gamers flock to secure limited units.

  • LOAD IT UP

While you scramble for a PS5 order or tear open the packaging, let's dive into how the PS5 loads so fast.

You'll soon notice that games load incredibly quickly – especially compared to the PS4.

That's because Sony has fitted the PS5 with an ultrafast SSD, or solid state drive.

Unlike big physical hard-disk drives, an SSD is flash memory and has no moving parts.

Sony has opted for a particularly fast SSD that's very well-optimised for its games.

It promised an incredible 5.5GB/s of read bandwidth, and is described by Sony as a “true generational leap”.

So it means you'll spend less time waiting, and more time playing.

  • HONEY, I'M HOME!

PlayStation 5 boxes are now arriving at doorsteps up and down the country.

Beleaguered couriers are racing to get hundreds of thousands of consoles to customers – some of which won't arrive for a while.

    Some of the happy gamers…

  • TELLY TALK

Your brand new PS5 (or Xbox, if you're that way inclined) is brimming with next-gen gaming tech.

So you'll want to make sure your TV has all the bells-and-whistles to get the most out of the machine.

If you're buying a new telly this year, here's what to look out for…

  • STOCK ALERT!

Currys is selling the PS5 right now – and it's still promising release day delivery.

The delivery time may be a mistake, but there's absolutely stock available if you're fast.

However, you can't collect – so this is a delivery-only offer.

    Find it here…

  • RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

There's already lots of anger at GAME and Yodel over the bungled delivery fiasco.

Plenty of pre-order customers are taking to Twitter to moan that their new consoles won't arrive today.

    Take a look…

  • SALE WARNING!

Remember: Amazon is restocking the PlayStation 5 at midday today.

Units will be limited, so it's going to be first-come, first-served.

Make sure you're online at noon on the dot, and you've got your credit card details and address ready to go.

It's likely they'll sell out extremely quickly.

Don't forget: Amazon's delivery times for the PS5 are estimates only.

There's every chance it won't arrive before Christmas – so brace yourself for that very deep pain.

  • GONE WITHOUT A TRACE

There was fury overnight as PS5 pre-order customers at GAME were warned their consoles might not arrive on time.

The shock email blamed couriers at Yodel for capacity issues.

It means some pre-orders simply won't arrive today.

Thankfully, GAME says that all of these missing deliveries will turn up on Friday.

It's also worth noting that not all GAME deliveries are affected – check your emails to see if you'e been stung.

  • IT'S A BIG BOI

Some of you will probably be wondering exactly how big the PS5 is.

    MASSIVE!

    For the full-size PS5, you're looking at 390mm x 104mm x 260mm (width x height x depth).

It weighs a whopping 4.5 kilos to boot.

And the slightly more svelte PS5 Digital Edition comes in at 390mm x 92mm x 260mm.

    It's marginally lighter at 3.9kg.

  • KNOCK AT THE DOOR

Gamers are awake and already pining for their PS5 deliveries.

Twitter is being flooded with players ready to unwrap their new toy – and play right through lockdown into the new Year.

    Check it out…

  • WHAT A VIEW!

Sony has adopted a brand new space-age design for the PS5.

It's got a seriously curvaceous white outer casing that bends in and out.

And the core column is black, with a glowing blue trim.

It looks cool but it's absolutely enormous, standing at around 40cm tall.

Make sure you've got space for yours…

  • SEE THE LIGHT!

Ray-tracing means that a game can realistically map out how light moves around, against and through objects.

So light will move realistically, but it also means you’ll get more effective shadows and reflections too.

You’ll notice this in the new Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS5!

  • HEY, RAY!
The PS5 is offering ray-tracing – but what is it?

It’s one of the biggest graphics improvements for next-gen gaming, and is also offered on the new Xbox – as well as PC.

For years, lighting has been poor and unrealistic in games.

But ray-tracing changes that by using your PS5’s hardware to trace the rays of light.

  • SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES

The PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man reboot was a huge success when it launched in 2018, with more than 9million gamers picking up a copy.

The sequel is confirmed for a PS5 launch release, and follows the story of 15-year-old Miles Morales, a superhero friend of Peter Parker's.

  • SACKBOY: A BIG ADVENTURE

The PS5 is getting a new Sackboy game, starring the iconic character from LittleBigPlanet.

Like entries to the LittleBigPlanet series, it's a fun, colourful platformer.

  • NBA 2K21

Everyone's favourite basketball video game is back and it'll be hitting the PS5 and Xbox Series X with next-gen graphics.

  • FORTNITE

Everyone's favourite battle royale shooter is back with a bang, hitting both the PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch.

The game will be optimised to take full advantage of the consoles' beefy specs, developer Epic Games says.

  • FIFA 21

EA Sports' latest football game came out earlier this month and will also launch on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

  • DESTRUCTION ALLSTARS

Destruction Allstars is a full-throttle monster truck game out on the PS5 at launch.

It looks like a great option for adrenaline junkies, and anyone who likes smashing things.
