PlayStation 4 system update 8.00 warns your party voice chat can be recorded and sent to Sony for review - TheSixthAxis

As part of update 8.00 Sony have announced that all party voice chats may be recorded and the internet is not having it, with angry tweets about invasion of privacy and consent.

The internet isn’t very good at reading the small print as, since launch, the PlayStation Network Terms of Service has included the following text:

Information we get can include your content, voice and text communications, gameplay videos, the time and location of your activities, your real name, your PSN Online ID and IP address.

By using the PSN you implicitly agree that your voice could be recorded, this is nothing new. What is new is that the 8.00 update shows the following message which seems to suggest your fellow players will now be able to report a voice chat to Sony who can listen back and see if there was anything unsavoury going on. Unfortunately as update 8.00 has completely screwed the friends list on the PSN we can’t check to see if that is the case.

The message does clearly state that the chats must be “sent to us by other users” so Sony are not monitoring every single voice chat, just the ones that get sent to them.

Update 8.00 also links Party and Messages much more closely, so a group message chat has an associated party chat.

New avatars are being made available for you to select for your profile, including Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and more.

The update also enhances the options you have for account security, adding 2-Step Verification (2SV) that lets you use third party authenticator apps to sign-in across PS4, mobile and web browsers. This will exist alongside the current 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) system which pings you a quick text message.

Parental Controls see ‘Communicating with Other Players’ and ‘Viewing Content Created by other Players’ combined into one setting – ‘Communication and User Generated Content’. This covers both areas of communication and UGC sharing. Kids will be able to request access from their parents, who will receive email notifications and can make exceptions to a rule.
