OnePlus shows off the OnePlus 8T design before launch - Ars Technica

OnePlus is gearing up to launch the OnePlus 8T, a Q4 2020 followup to the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, both of which launched around April. The phone is officially launching on October 14, but as part of the company's usual trickle of information before launch, today it posted a video of the phone, confirming what it will look like.

The video is just a quick teaser, but it shows off the back of the phone and the new camera block, along with a sketch of the front of the phone. The back camera block is a lot bigger compared to the OnePlus 8 Pro. Now it houses not only the usual strip of three camera lenses but also the extra camera equipment. From top to bottom, the three circles on the right side look like an LED flash, laser autofocus, and a fourth camera lens. On the OnePlus 8 Pro, these components were just flush with the back of the phone. While phone manufacturers seem to never want to give us thicker phones with bigger batteries, bigger camera blocks are a way to ever-so-slightly move in that direction, freeing up more internal space for battery.

We also know what the front of the OnePlus 8T will look like, thanks to OnePlus accidentally including an image of the phone in an OS update. It's the usual all-screen design with a hole-punch camera, and it looks a lot like the OnePlus 8 Pro. (Here's hoping that 2021 is the year of the under-display camera.) The only major difference is that the display of the OnePlus 8T looks flat rather than curved like the sides of the OnePlus 8 Pro. Curved displays don't add anything positive to a phone; they just distort the screen and pick up glare from overhead lights, so this is a big improvement.

We also have a spec sheet leak thanks to an early Amazon listing posted by Ishan Agarwal on Twitter, showing that the device has a 6.5-inch 120Hz 1080p OLED display, a Snapdragon 865, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 4500mAh battery. There's a higher-spec option for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The company has already talked about the 65W "Warp Charge" capability of the OnePlus 8T in an interview with PCMag; the feature is supposed to give double the speed of the 30W charging that ships on current OnePlus devices. PCMag relayed the speed expectations from OnePlus, saying, "According to OnePlus, this means the 8T will charge to 40% in 10 minutes, to 58% in 15 minutes, and to 100% in 39 minutes." In the interview, the company also admitted that the phone won't have wireless charging.

It doesn't seem like there's a huge distance between the OnePlus 8T and the OnePlus 8 Pro, which released earlier this year. It's hard to know what to make of the phone without knowing how much it will cost. With a pandemic-depressed economy and this being a cheaper, non-"Pro" model, we're hoping for a low price.
