Games Inbox: Are you planning to get a PS5 this year? - Metro.co.uk

PS5 console
Is your mind made up? (pic: Sony)

The Thursday Inbox tries to guess how The Last Of Us Part 2’s permadeath will work, as one reader is doubtful of a Tomb Raider 2 remake.

Purchase planned
So the DualSense controller battery news sound good, in fact everything sounds pretty good about the PlayStation 5 so far, even though they haven’t gone into much detail about the console itself. I’m not surprised to hear a lot of people have already made their minds up to get it though and I’m wondering for those that are on the fence what more they need to hear?

I think it’s fair to say at this point that Microsoft hasn’t got any secret weapons ready to be unveiled but I doubt Sony has either. Some people are holding out for them to announce an equivalent of Game Pass but even though I think that would be a good idea I really don’t see it happening. Sony are too proud for that and it would really interfere with how they use and promote their first party games.

I think the only thing I really want to hear from Sony at the moment, other than the price, is a detailed roadmap of when their exclusives are going to be released. They don’t have to be dates but months, or at least seasons and years, would be very reassuring. I don’t want to find out everything but Spider-Man isn’t out till 2022.

Other than that though I think I’m sold. If the console turns out to be super expensive, I’ll delay getting it till next year, if not I’m ready to jump in now.

Track record
I have to say I find it very hard not to blame Microsoft for the problems with Halo Infinite. As other readers have pointed out they’ve had five years to work on Halo Infinite and even if they didn’t do a days work after the lockdown started in March I fail to understand how the game can be in this bad a state this close to their intended launch.

Actually, maybe it’s not Microsoft so much as 343 Industries who are at fault. They’ve not exactly enjoyed a faultless record since taking over from Bungie, with Halo 4 and 5 not being particularly loved and Halo: The Master Chief Collection being an absolute technical disaster for years. Sure, they’ve fixed it now but, as usual with games companies, they seem to have learnt nothing from that when making Halo Infinite.

I don’t know what incentive there is now for anyone to buy the Xbox Series X, especially as they still haven’t shown us anything remotely close to proof that it is the most powerful console. What are they going to demo that with now? Assassin’s Creed?! I wasn’t going to get either console this year but I’m definitely not getting an Xbox.

No second life
Don’t think I’ve played a game with permadeath (other than XCOM) so not sure if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick regarding the new mode in The Last Of Us Part 2. But I’m assuming you’d save regularly (as it’s a 30+ hour game) and if you die you’d just got back to your last save point, rather than the start?

Or is it smart enough to not allow that (even allowing for saves)? I’m assuming the latter as otherwise it would be just like playing it normally (albeit with more spread out save points as you’d save manually).

Appreciate this question makes me sound stupid but my curiosity outweighs any thoughts of appearing foolish.
TheTruthSoul (PSN ID)

GC: It doesn’t make you sound stupid as the option is almost unknown in action games. We assume it would be closer to Iron Man mode in XCOM, where you only have one save and it’s deleted if you die. Or perhaps not, we don’t know. Unless the option was also patched into the first game and we’re not aware?

Digging up the past
The Tomb Raider 2 remake won’t happen for some time and here’s why.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are not interested in rebooting the game as they want to move away from it and concentrate on the games they’ve been releasing and moving it on.

A good friend of mine worked on the recent Tomb Raider: Dark Angel album by composer Peter Connelly and it’s evident both Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are very hard to communicate with and basically just don’t want to know when it comes to the diehard fans.

Trust me, if they were ever to make a reboot of the game in the franchise it should be the games that were very poor in gameplay, such as Tomb Raider Chronicles, etc.

This could also pave the way to using Peter’s new music too.

Digital trigger
The supposed re-release of Super Mario Sunshine would have been ideal now with all tropical weather. One thing that I remember from the game was the F.L.U.D.D. being triggered by the shoulder button, which I think on the GameCube were analogue.

The Switch doesn’t have analogue buttons. Not sure how Nintendo will get around this if the re-release does materialise. I am I right in thinking a lot of GameCube games were analogue triggered?
Alek Kazam

GC: It’s not a re-release, the rumour is for a remaster or remake – which would imply a number of changes as a matter of course. But you’re right that the analogue triggers do present a problem. We’re sure there’s some way round it though, perhaps by using motion controls. Although they are still making the GameCube controller, for Smash Bros., so maybe there’ll be an old school option too.

Locked in
Got a feeling the day the Xbox Series X is coming out is 7 November. On the Halo suit the number was 711 and they really did focus on that number which to me was a massive clue. But to me what’s the point now? It’s delayed till 2021, what’s the point of the Xbox coming out this year?

They should delay it till Halo Infinite is ready but they will never do that. I mean Sony would have a good six months head start and we all know what happened to Sony in the PlayStation 3 days when they did a staged launch, Xbox 360 smashed them. I wonder what Sony are thinking now. I think they’re all relaxing in the sun with an ice cold drink, laughing at another mess up by their rivals.

Cheaper option
Regarding the next gen consoles, I was already needing a reason to be an early adopter, and that would have to have been the games available at launch.

Discussed this with not-so-mini-WoD and he’s thinking the exact same, there’s nothing out there at the minute to drive us to getting new consoles.

For once I’m more than happy to wait and see how the new Halo turns out and look at the Xbox then, when Microsoft, most likely, do a relaunch to coincide with the release of the game. The boy, who’s friends all have the PlayStation, will also wait… certainly make’s Christmas shopping trickier this year (but hopefully a little cheaper).

Negative hype
Of course there could be further revelations to come, as I wouldn’t trust Phil Spencer to organise a heavy drinking session in a brewery, and I think after the launch of the Xbox Series X he needs to resign as I can’t see what improvements he’s ushered in at all, but I will probably still buy a Xbox Series X… and even as I type that I can’t help thinking back to my purchases of the PS Vita, Wii U, or even the 3DS at launch – which while occasionally enjoyable were mostly less than stellar decisions.

But saying that, as I was wanting to replace my Xbox One with the Xbox One X earlier in the year and never got round to it, I may as well buy an Xbox Series X instead.

Halo Infinite was one of the games I was looking forward to this year but not as much as Cyberpunk 2077, so to play that on a machine that will make the current gen version perform the best it could still be worth it.

I made the decision to not get a PlayStation 5 months ago – well it wasn’t even a decision really, I missed out on the last few years’ big hitters, from God Of War to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, due to going travelling and I’ve just never had the compulsion to catch up. Also, most of my online gaming with my mates is done through the Xbox so unless they go PlayStation, which I know they won’t, then neither will I. Game Pass is another incentive but to be fair I find myself going ‘game blind’ when looking at the selection and spend more time procrastinating than playing.

This console launch cycle though is leaving me wearier than others I can remember. Maybe with the sheer amount of (dis)information and opinions on anything nowadays I’m just overloaded and bombarded with a whole lot of nothing, but by the time we get to the launch of the consoles I think I could be so negatively hyped I can’t even be bothered to buy anything.

Inbox also-rans
I wonder if Xbox Series X and Microsoft Studios will give us a Halo Wars 3 which would be done right in a way to offer healthy competition to EA’s Command & Conquer series. Would be nice to have something like this wouldn’t it?
gaz be rotten (gamertag)

GC: It would, but we’re not sure what competition Command & Conquer itself is offering. Apart from the PC-only remaster it hasn’t had a proper new game in 10 years.

Total War Saga: Troy is free today on Epic Store for one day and then it goes to full price. Also free is Remnant: From the Ashes and The Alto Collection.

This week’s Hot Topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Grackle, who asks what franchises are you most looking forward to in the next gen?

With the next gen consoles almost upon us which long-running series are you most looking forward to getting a new sequel or reboot? What do you hope to see from the new game and how do you think the next gen hardware will help to change and improve it?

As long as it’s still an active franchise, that has had a recent new entry this gen, it doesn’t matter whether it’s been announced yet or not, so feel free to make assumptions about what will eventually be coming to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
