The Witcher universe is getting its own version of Pokémon Go - Polygon

With The Witcher: Monster Slayer, Geralt of Rivia is going the way of Pokémon Go.

CD Projekt’s version of The Witcher — the mutant monster slayer first created by author Andrzej Sapkowski — has taken many forms. There are the video games of course, but also a spin-off collectible card game, a tabletop role-playing game, and a Netflix series starring Henry Cavil. Soon, there will be an augmented reality game as well.

In a news release issued on Wednesday, CD Projekt said its newest studio — Spokko, which was opened in 2018 — has been busy on Monster Slayer for some time. It included a brief teaser trailer, available on YouTube and embedded above, that shows a player walking through a real-life forest only to encounter an Ent-like abomination visible only with the help of his phone.

Little about the gameplay, other than stumbling upon virtual monsters in the real-world, was revealed in the trailer. The news release, on the other hand, makes this sound like a very interesting game indeed.

Featuring console-grade visuals, Monster Slayer lets players explore the world around them while tracking, studying, and fighting monsters both new and familiar, using time of day and real-life weather conditions to gain the upper hand,” CD Projekt explained. “Preparation is key in order to defeat tougher enemies, as players will need to brew powerful potions and oils, craft bombs and monster bait, and upgrade their character before putting these beasts to the sword and signs in first-person AR combat.”

CD Projekt also said that players should expect to do a lot more than just wander around collecting monsters. The AR game will include “rich, story-driven quests inspired by other games from the series.”

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is headed to both iOS and Android platforms later this year, and will be free-to-play.
