UPDATE 4: Fortnite Season 4 downtime is over, which means you can play Battle Royale right now.
UPDATE 3: Fortnite developer Epic Games has revealed more details about the Season 4 changes and patch notes.
According to a new post by Epic Games, players will be able to unleash powerful new abilities, such as Doctor Doom’s Arcane Gauntlets and Groot’s Bramble Shield.
"After the Island and the world of Marvel collided, powerful abilities are now at your command," reads the official patch notes.
"During battle, adopt super-powers like Doctor Doom’s Arcane Gauntlets, Groot’s Bramble Shield, Silver Surfer’s Board, and more arriving later in the Season.
"In addition to new super-powers, take action with the Stark Industries Energy Rifle, a distinct weapon from Stark Labs that has a different benefit depending on how you aim.
"Bring your weapons and powers with you as you explore iconic locations both current and upcoming, such as Doom’s Domain, Sentinel Graveyard, and more."
UPDATE 2: Fortnite developer Epic Games has released the Battle Pass trailer, which gives fans a look at some of the changes coming as part of Season 4.
Judging by the new Battle Pass trailer, map changes include the addition of the SHIELD Helicarrier.
Based on the leaked challenges, other new map locations include Doom's Domain and the Sentinel Graveyard. The challenges also suggest that players will be able to use a new Stark Industries Energy Rifle.
New skins include Storm, Groot, Wolverine, She-Hulk, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Mystique, Thor and Doctor Doom (via Lucas7Yoshi).
Many of the skins will have unlockable variants based on the superhero and their alter egos.
The trailer also confirms that the LMG will be unvaulted, while the Pump Shotgun has also been reinstated. Unvaulted items include Bouncepads, Boogie Bombs and Shockwaves.
UPDATE: Fortnite fans are currently unable to login to the game, as Epic takes the servers offline for update 14.00.
"We're beginning to disable services in preparation for Chapter 2 - Season 4 (v14.00)," reads an Epic tweet.
"If you're currently in a session, you can continue to play until downtime starts at approx. 2 AM ET (06:00 UTC)."
Sadly, this grace period has now ended, which means Fortnite is fully offline until further notice.
"Downtime for Chapter 2 - Season 4 (v14.00) has begun. We’ll provide an update when downtime ends."
ORIGINAL: Fortnite developer Epic Games has unleashed update 14.00 for Chapter 2, Season 4 of Battle Royale.
Available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Android (sort of), the new Fortnite update coincides with the release of a brand new Marvel-themed Battle Pass.
The only bad news is that update 14.00 is also accompanied by a period of server downtime on all platforms.
Fortnite developer Epic Games announced the news on Twitter, telling fans that Season 4 has an August 27 release date.
Servers will go offline at 7am BST for fans playing in the UK, and are likely to come back online at around 9am.
"Fortnite Chapter 2 - Season 4 (v14.00) arrives August 27," reads an Epic tweet. "Downtime for the Season begins at 2 AM ET (06:00 UTC)."
Needless to say, the update will be much bigger than usual, so expect a lengthy list of patch notes when it finally drops.
Sadly, Epic's feud with Apple means that iOS users will be unable to update the game and enjoy the new season.
"Apple has blocked your ability to update Fortnite on the App Store, and has said they will terminate our ability to develop Fortnite for Apple devices. As a result, Chapter 2 - Season 4 (v14.00) will not release on Apple devices on August 27."
In terms of patch notes, update 14.00 is headlined by a brand new Battle Pass.
The Battle Pass will contain around 100 different rewards, including skins, emotes, sprays, items and V-Bucks.
Based on the pre-season leaks and teases, new skins include Wolverine, Captain America, Groot, Storm, Iron Man and more.
Map changes will also feature heavily in the 14.00 update. Expect the appearance of a superhero HQ, perhaps like the Avengers Tower, or X-Mansion.
Epic Games will also make various gameplay tweaks and big fixes, some of which can be seen in the early patch notes below.
Express Online will update this article with the full list of patch notes when the update drops at 7am BST.
