Drivers flabbergasted by 'mystery' button on rear-view mirror - that only works sometimes - The Mirror

No matter how long you've had your car, there's always something new you can learn about the vehicle - from a trick to open the windows using only your keys, to a hack to help find it when you've lost it in a car park.

Recently, drivers have been left stunned by the discovery that there's a 'magic' button in some cars that will defrost the windscreen in a matter of seconds and now it seems there's another button that many people have been stumped by.

Certain vehicles have a little button, that looks like a power button, located on the bottom of their rear-view mirror and numerous people have turned to the internet in the hopes of finding out what exactly it does.

Over the last few years, there have been posts on Reddit, Quora, GTR.co.uk and Mazda's website where users have shared the "mystery" button and demanded answers.

On Reddit's What Is This forum, someone asked: "What is this button for on my rear-view mirror?"

To which a fellow user admitted they also had no clue about it, saying: "I've had my Jeep for close to four years now and still have no idea what this button does... the only thing that happens when I click the power button is the green light turns off."

People were quick to inform them that the button is used for auto-dimming and will only work at night.

According to the Mazda website, the auto-dimming feature is "really quite simple".

They explain: "When auto-dimming is turned on, your rear-view mirror will automatically darken in order to reduce headlight glare. There is a rear light sensor that can detect when a vehicle behind you is shining its headlights toward your mirrors.

"Anytime the vehicle is started, the auto-dimming feature will be activated."

The experts added: "Though you won’t always need to use the auto-dimming feature, it can be extremely useful for nighttime driving."

Whether or not you have the button will depend on the make and model of your car.

Some vehicles might have two buttons, instead of one and have both an 'on' and an 'off' switch.

Users had mixed responses to finding out what the button does, with one person proclaiming: "Another great life mystery solved."

However some people claimed their button did nothing and they weren't impressed.

A different user shared how they were fascinated to learn new things about their GTR and had been inspired to read their owner's manual, adding: "I'm about halfway through the two manuals, I am learning new stuff every day, the voice recognition is just the best ever, yesterday I discovered the heated seat switch, the most important thing I have learned is how to close the bonnet properly, let it drop from about 12 inches, otherwise there is a risk its not secured properly. This machine is just a real pleasure to learn about and to drive."
