Thousands of Britons now regret splashing out on luxury items such as pizza ovens and gym equipment - Daily Mail

Why that lockdown hot tub is money down the drain: Thousands of Britons now regret splashing out on luxury items such as pizza ovens and gym equipment during Covid shut-ins, research shows

  • One in 20 adults bought a hot tub for relaxation but 36 per cent regret it
  • Most regretted impulse buys include home gym equipment and gaming gadgets
  • Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty gifted Jacuzzi swim spa in 2020 to train

Nine out of ten Britons made it through lockdown thanks to a spot of retail therapy – but thousands who splashed out on hot tubs and pizza ovens are now regretting their purchases, research shows.

During the pandemic we spent on average more than £1,200 each at a collective cost of £57.6billion. But £6.6billion worth of these purchases are no longer used.

The most bitterly regretted impulse buys include home gym equipment, gaming gadgets and musical instruments.

While one in 20 adults bought a hot tub for relaxation time, 36 per cent of them wished they hadn't opened their wallet.

One in eight of us purchased an instrument, but this hit a bum note with 37 per cent of buyers. A third of those surveyed had bought a new smartphone or tablet, according to data from the How We Live report, with 30 per cent regretting this investment in new technology.

Eight per cent of consumers never even used their new items, which included bread-makers and scooters, while another nine per cent used them at first – but they're now gathering dust. Less pricey goods such as clothes and shoes were in demand, with more than half the population treating themselves to new wardrobes.

A quarter of those surveyed blamed spending more time at home or wanting to cheer themselves up for their spending spree.

Nicola Charles, of insurer Aviva, which polled 4,000 adults, said: 'Faced with weeks or months at home, many of us made purchases to entertain ourselves, often costing hundreds or even thousands of pounds.'

Other reasons included needing equipment for new hobbies and having and more disposable income as they were missing out on holidays and socialising.

Ms Charles added: 'So much has changed since the start of 2020.

'The way we work, how we interact with others...and it seems the contents of our homes too.'

But buyers' regret has not appeared to have affected everyone.

Peaty moved into a bigger house following his success this summer in Tokyo and now has two hot tubs in his back garden.
