Can I see Mum this Mother's Day? Rules for what you can and can't do - Leicestershire Live

It might be Mother's Day, but people are being reminded that's no excuse to break the lockdown laws.

While schools are back and there are some relaxations on the rules about visiting care home residents and meeting in public, the rules about going to each other's homes are still in place.

Although there are exceptions for welfare, and for entering homes as part of your job, the only excuse generally for visiting other people is if you are in a social support bubble with them.

Bubbles can only be made up of a maximum of two households, and one of those households should only have one person in it.

The bottom line today is that you can see your mum, but if do - where there isn't a bubble - you must do so outside. You cannot go to her home nor garden, nor she to yours.

And with temperatures in Leicestershire not expected to get into double figures today, you might want to take a flask of hot drink.

The rules also mean that only one person at a time can be with their mum outside today. The rules on the government's website state: "People will be allowed to leave home for recreation and exercise outdoors with their household or support bubble, if they are eligible for one, or with one person from outside their household."

The next change to the lockdown laws comes on March 29, when the 'Stay at Home' order is being dropped and people will be able to have get-togethers in one another's gardens with either two households or up to six people from different households being allowed to gather outdoors.

The rules for March 29 states: "From 29 March, when most schools start to break up for the Easter holidays, outdoor gatherings (including in private gardens) of either 6 people (the Rule of 6) or 2 households will also be allowed, making it easier for friends and families to meet outside."

A survey carried out for the Observer by the Parent Ping app asked more than 2,000 people about their Mother's Day plans and about a quarter indicated they intended to break the law to meet their mothers.
