Windows 10 May 2020 update: every amazing new feature coming to your PC in latest upgrade - Express.co.uk

Microsoft started to roll out its first feature-packed update of the year last week. Dubbed May 2020 Update, the latest version of the operating system is slowly hitting laptops, two-in-one gadgets and desktop PCs worldwide. As well as the usual bug fixes and security tweaks, there are plenty of shiny new additions to get excited about too.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update contains changes to the Search menu, chatty voice assistant Cortana, and boasts an all-new option to go password-free – handy if you're always having to hit the Forgotten Your Password? button for your online logins. As long as you're not one of the PC users that , there's a lot to like here. Below we've outlined some of the headline features. But if you're ready to take the plunge – and your PC hasn't automatically updated yet – you can find out .

Windows 10 May 2020 Update: Some Of The Most Exciting Features~

Faster, Easier Connections: Microsoft says it's making it easier and faster to pair your Bluetooth devices to your compatible Windows 10 PC. Until now, Windows 10 users had to head to the Settings app to pair new Bluetooth headphones or peripherals. With May 2020 Update installed, you'll be able to take care of everything in the notifications slide-out window with fewer steps.

Go Password-less: This is one of the stand-out features in the latest Windows 10 update. The new feature brings improved security and a simple sign-in experience – you sign-in with your face. Windows Hello already allows PC owners to login to their device with a quick glance, but now you can use the same technology for third-party accounts too. After the update, head to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options on your Windows 10 PC and select On in the new Require Windows Hello Sign-In For Microsoft Accounts.

Memory Improvements in Microsoft Edge: This recently-overhauled Chrome rival is the most used application and where people spend a large portion of their time on Windows, Microsoft says. As a result, Microsoft has made sure that one of the first Win32 applications that will take advantage of segment heap capabilities is Microsoft Edge. The early internal testing results of devices on the May 2020 Update are showing a memory usage reduction of up to 27 percent when browsing with Microsoft Edge. Individual device performance will vary based upon configuration and usage, but the lower memory usage could provide a better device experience because more memory would be available for apps to use.

Name Your Desktops: Now instead of “Desktop 1” or “Desktop 2” you can give your Virtual Desktops more descriptive, clever, amusing, or rude names. Using Virtual Desktop in Windows 10 allows you to expand your desktop beyond the physical limitations of the space, organise groups of related tasks, and easily switch between them. Tackling what you want to –when you want to – should now be a little easier.

It's A Numbers Game: Keep the calculator close by at all times – now you can choose to keep the Calculator app on top of every other window. That means you'll be able to have multiple windows open without worrying about losing your calculator among all the other apps.

Notepad Newness: The beloved 30-year-old text editor has some small but mighty improvements. There’s now wrap-around find/replace, quick text zooming, and when you see an asterisk in the title bar you’ll know you have unsaved changes.

Bringing Smartphones and PCs Closer Together: With the Windows 10 May 2020 Update installed on your machine, you'll find some of the most popular features from Microsoft's companion Your Phone app on the PC. The ability to make phone calls from within Windows 10 will now be found on all ARM-powered PCs from Microsoft and third-party device manufacturers.

No Need To Cursor, It's Right There: Windows Magnifier has a new ability in the latest update – it will keep the text cursor in the centre of the screen, making it easier and smoother to type. That should mean you're not.

If you'd like to check to find out whether the Windows 10 May 2020 Update is ready and waiting to be installed on your PC, here's what you need to do. Open your Windows Update panel – which you can found by heading to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update – and then hit the Check For Updates button. Once the update appears, you can select Download and Install.

If you can't see the update in settings then this means it's not arrived on your machine quite yet. While patience is undoubtedly a virtue, Microsoft does offer an option for those who cannot bear to wait until Windows 10 May 2020 slowly reaches them. You can head to the following page and hit Download to get the disc image of the latest version of Windows 10 and install that onto your machine.

Amazon slammed after listings with racist abuse including the N-word appeared on UK online store - The Sun

AMAZON has been slammed after listings with racist abuse appeared on its UK online store.

Customers searching for Apple AirPod headphones and similar products were instead confronted with messages that included the N-word.

Hundreds of people reported the images before they were eventually taken down by Amazon.

They appeared on the first page of results of Amazon’s UK site, mostly on searches for “airpods” or “bluetooth headphones.”

Screenshots and video grabs were shared on Twitter, with users blasting the retailer.

It comes as race riots erupt across the US after the death of George Floyd.

Journalist Nadine White posted online: “Being black right now is hard enough.

“We don’t need to be called the N-word while shopping online.”

Another user said: “Disgusting and disrespectful Amazon for letting some racist idiot advertise on your site.”

It was also criticised for not removing them fast enough.

Amazon blamed the messages on a trouble-making third-party seller, or “bad actor”.

A spokeswoman said: “We are removing the images in question and have taken action on the bad actor.”

Last month the US added five of Amazon’s websites to its “notorious markets” report on marketplaces known for selling fake items.

But the company strongly disagreed, claiming that it was a “purely political act”.

Amazon UK website defaced with racist abuse - BBC News

Amazon has blamed a "bad actor" for racist abuse that appeared on multiple listings on its UK website.

The abuse, now removed, appeared when users searched the online shop for Apple AirPods and similar products.

It was unclear how long the racist language remained on the site, but it sparked outrage on Twitter and the sharing of screenshots and video grabs.

"We investigated, removed the images in question and took action against the bad actor," Amazon told the BBC.

The company did not elaborate on the "bad actor", nor give details of how many products were defaced and how long the abuse was visible on the listings.

Nadine White, a journalist for the Huffington Post, tweeted that the abuse "needs to be acknowledged, removed, explained, apologised for asap. Being Black right now is hard enough; we don't need to be called the N- word while shopping online, to boot".

Another Twitter user said Amazon should have been able to remove the offending messages in minutes. "They're still on Amazon UK. Extraordinarily poor site administration," he said during early hours of Sunday.

Amazon also allows third-party retailers to sell goods through its website, with the company making about half its retail revenues from this.

But the Amazon Marketplace platform has come under scrutiny.

There has been concern about counterfeit goods appearing in the listings, and during the coronavirus pandemic Amazon was criticised for not doing enough to stop sellers inflating prices.

In April, five Amazon e-commerce websites, including the UK, were added to the US trade regulator's "notorious markets" report on marketplaces known for counterfeiting and piracy concerns.

Amazon disagreed strongly with the move, saying in a statement that "this purely political act is another example of the administration using the US government to advance a personal vendetta against Amazon".

New 2020 BMW 4 Series Coupe leaked ahead of Tuesday's reveal - AutoExpress

BMW has confirmed that the next 4 Series Coupe will be officially revealed on 2 June but the new car has slipped out early, pictured in what appears to be an official image leaked online. The radical design overhaul that has been on the cards for the new 4 Series is confirmed along with the oversize front grille that's been attracting so much interest in the run-up to the launch.

Advertisement - Article continues below

As expected, the nose of the new BMW 4 Series is dominated by a pair of large, vertically oriented kidney grilles, quite unlike those on the current 3 Series saloon it shares its platform with. As such, BMW will employ a new strategy with its new coupe. Until now, it’s been intrinsically linked to the 3 Series, but the brand will clearly market the newcomer as much more than a sibling to the saloon, with an entirely separate design. No other information has been published so far.

The new 4 Series is being pushed through the final stages of its development cycle, with the latest spy shots showing a lightly camouflaged test mule undergoing handling assessment at the Nurburgring. It will go on sale later this year, with four and six-cylinder power anticipated. A convertible will follow, as will a hot M4 version.

We’ve already driven a prototype version of the 4 Series Coupe – in both middling 430i and hot M440i trims – and the early signs show a huge amount of promise. Here’s everything we know about the car so far.

New BMW 4 Series: styling

Before the leak, BMW had released some official images of the new 4 Series Coupe – and while the car in those pictures wears heavy camouflage, our spy photographers had also spotted a range of scantily clad test mules elsewhere – giving us a good indication of the styling. The big talking point is the car’s new front end.

Advertisement - Article continues below

BMW says that the polarising look is a fresh interpretation of the vertical grille seen on the brand’s famed 328 sports car and the E9 coupe of the late sixties and early seventies. The controversial appearance is also intended to further distance the 4 Series Coupe from the 3 Series saloon on which it’s based.

Elsewhere, the 4 Series Coupe’s styling is almost identical to the BMW Concept 4 from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. A pair of slim LED headlamps, flared haunches, and a squared-off tail all feature.

New BMW 4 Series: chassis and performance

Like its predecessors, the 4 Series is based on the 3 Series saloon, albeit with several mechanical and structural tweaks which should make it a sharper car to drive. The roofline of the coupe body is 57mm lower than the four door, which not only improves aerodynamic efficiency slightly, but also lowers the car’s centre of gravity by 21mm.

Further attention has been given to the suspension setup. The coupe’s rear track has grown 23mm from the saloon, while revised dampers and a strengthened front bulkhead promise more precise steering response.

The 4 Series line-up will show an increased focus on performance. We expect a hot M440i xDrive variant to arrive early marked out by a more aggressive body-kit and will be powered by a 369bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine, which will send its power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

BMW has also confirmed that the M440i xDrive model will feature a 48-volt mild hybrid setup. The electric motor adds an extra 11bhp, and is claimed to improve throttle response and deliver smoother getaways from standstill. The motor is powered by a small additional battery that is charged up from energy that would otherwise be wasted during deceleration.

Four-cylinder petrol versions and diesel versions of the new 4 Series will also join the fold in time.

BMW will also engineer a flagship M4. This isn’t due until 2021, but it too will be powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six engine – one developed specifically by BMW’s M Division. Shared with the current X3 M, this twin-turbocharged unit makes up to 503bhp and 600Nm. Plus, for the first time in an M4, a selectable four-wheel-drive system will be used.

New BMW 4 Series: price and release date

BMW is yet to officially announce prices for the next-generation 4 Series Coupe, but buyers should expect to pay a small premium over the equivalent 3 Series saloon. We expect prices for the range-topping M440i model will start from around £47,000, while the lesser-specced 430i variant should be priced from around £42,000.

Has BMW made the new 4 Series’s grille too big? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below below…

You're overpaying for phone data during the outbreak - TechRadar India

We’re certainly using our phones a bit differently while we shelter-in-place to ride out the outbreak – binging more media, chatting over video, and taking breaks from social media. But it took us a couple months to realize something else: since we’ve spent most of our time in our apartments and homes, we’re rarely out of Wi-Fi range, and our LTE data consumption has plummeted.

Which has led us to a new suggestion: perhaps it’s time to dial down your data cap and save some money on your monthly plan, at least for the foreseeable future.

This advice isn’t for everyone: there are still plenty of you who are still leaving home often enough to keep your data plan right where it is, and are benefiting from US carriers relaxing late fees, UK carriers giving 10GB of extra data per month, or other such relief amid the outbreak.

Data use (in GB) by month: March, April, and May

Data use (in GB) by month: March, April, and May (Image credit: Future)

But we, working from home, found our cellular data use plummeting: one of our editors, who regularly used more than 14GB per month, saw their LTE data consumption drop down to just over 1GB. To be clear, everyone’s still downloading more data as they watch and video chat more – they’re just accessing it over their Wi-Fi instead of tapping into their data plan.

First up: check your data

Before you consider jumping ship on your reliable data plan, it's probably wise to check how much data you’ve used. Now that we’re a couple months into a new stay-at-home reality, you should have some idea how that’s changed your data consumption habits.

Most carriers or networks will have their own tools that help you visualize how much data you’ve used in the last pay period, which is typically broken up into monthly chunks. Log in to your carrier’s website or dedicated app and head to your account page, where a ‘usage’ section should outline what you’ve used thus far.

Compare that to your previous period’s data usage by navigating to the appropriate section – for the US carrier Verizon, for instance, you can find this on the ‘My Usage’ page > ‘View previous usage’ > My Bill section, or you can find it in the My Verizon app by going to Data Hub > History > selecting which billing cycle you’d like to see.

If your data use hasn’t changed much, that’s fine – but if it’s dropped while you’ve been relying on WiFi at home, read on for how to change your plan.

Switching your plan: easier than it sounds

For most carriers, switching data plans isn’t too difficult, and it’s broadly similar between providers: sign in to your account either online or in your carrier’s dedicated app, navigate to your account settings, and look for a way to manage your plan (with Verizon, it’s changed by going to My Verizon > clicking Manage plan; with T-Mobile, it’s changed by going to Account > choosing your plan > clicking ‘Manage my plan’).

It’s possible that differences between carriers will make it more difficult to shift plans, though providers should let you swap to a new one without too much delay. If you’re still in contract, you may not be able to do so.

If it’ll save you money, and you’ll be sticking around Wi-Fi for the foreseeable future, it might be worth the effort to switch over. And if you don’t end up using much data at all, perhaps consider switching to a prepaid or metered plan, if that works for you.

By the time things open back up and you transition away from home, it should be just as easy to ramp up your data cap, too. And by saving a little money in the meantime, maybe you can afford some of the weird tech stuff we’ve picked up to make our shelter-at-home lives just a little more comfortable.

Galaxy S20 Ultra camera now has a special ‘close-up zoom’ mode - SamMobile

Thanks to the high-resolution 108MP sensor, the main camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra is more capable of taking zoomed-in pictures without losing detail compared to the 12MP cameras on the Galaxy S20 and S20+. But the S20 Ultra also has a limitation: Its main camera is less capable than the 12MP Galaxy S20 and S20+ camera when it comes to focusing on close objects, owing to a longer-than-usual focal length.

In layman terms, the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s main camera doesn’t let you get as close to objects as the camera on the smaller Galaxy S20 models without losing focus, which is a hardware limitation that cannot be corrected with software. To get around this, Samsung has added a new camera function to the Galaxy S20 Ultra with the latest update.

This new camera function is like a macro mode of sorts: Every time you get too close to an object and the Galaxy S20 Ultra realizes it cannot properly focus, it will now show a toggle called Use close-up zoom. Pressing this toggle sets the zoom level to 1.5x, so you can simply take a close-up shot without having to keep the phone physically close to whatever it is you’re trying to capture.

Check out the video below that shows this new Galaxy S20 Ultra camera feature in action.

This is a trick (zooming in for macro shots) many of you probably using already, and the close-up zoom toggle more or less just makes it an automated process. It also helps those who may not have thought of the trick on their own, and it helps maintain proper focus by suggesting to move farther away from the subject as well. And it’s made possible by the fact that the camera has 108 megapixels to work with, so you can get sharp and clear macro shots at 1.5x zoom without losing image quality.

It’s worth mentioning that the ‘close-up zoom’ function is not available on the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+. That’s probably because the non-Ultra models have better autofocus tech compared to the Ultra model (yes, it’s a messed up world we live in when a $1400 phone doesn’t have the best of everything over its cheaper siblings), and also because the 12-megapixel resolution would result in reduced quality when photos are captured at 1.5x magnification, as mentioned at the beginning of this article.

"We are removing the images in question and have taken action on the bad actor," Amazon told the BBC.

Windows 10 update is here, but Microsoft has warned some PC users to avoid it - Express.co.uk

That's because of numerous glitches found in the latest operating system upgrade. While tries to patch security flaws, performance issues and bugs in each of its operating systems ...this will often lead to more being introduced. Since updates come thick and fast, the fix is usually around the corner.

But with millions of people staying home to work, take classes and keep in touch with all of their friends and relatives – the timing couldn't be worse. Fortunately, Microsoft has been very upfront and published a complete list of the problems discovered inside the new version of Windows 10, dubbed May 2020 Update.

Some of these issues are pretty minor and shouldn't be enough to put you off installing Windows 10 May 2020 update – like a bug that stops some monitors with a variable refresh rate working as expected, which won't be an issue if you're not using a monitor with an optional high refresh-rate panel.

However, some are serious enough for Microsoft to warn users: "We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update".

Considering Microsoft is primarily a software company, that's a pretty serious step.

Of course, vast numbers of Windows 10 users allow their operating system to update automatically – the default setting – which means it'll be too late for them. While automatic updates can be incredibly useful as it keeps your machine guarded against the latest malware attacks and protected against bugs ...it can be a problem as it leaves means you don't have the option of skipping an operating system update with dangerous or frustrating glitches.

One of the issues found inside the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, the first of two major updates that ship for the operating system each year, causes issues when connecting multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously to your machine.

Another glitch relates to Intel GPUs, while unplugging certain Thunderbolt devices from your Windows 10 machine after the update could also cause you a headache.

The full list of everything wrong in Windows 10 May 2020 update can be found below, taken from the Microsoft help-page:

  • DISM might incorrectly report corruption is still present after repair
  • Variable refresh rate not working as expected on devices with Intel iGPU
  • Difficulty connecting to more than one Bluetooth device
  • Errors or issues during or after updating devices with Conexant ISST audio drivers
  • Errors or issues during or after updating devices with certain Conexant audio drivers
  • Issues using ImeMode property to control IME mode for individual text entry fields
  • Stop error when plugging or unplugging a Thunderbolt dock
  • Errors or unexpected restarts for some devices using Always On, Always Connected
  • No mouse input with apps and games using GameInput Redistributable
  • Issues updating or starting up devices when aksfridge.sys or aksdf.sys is present
  • Issue with older drivers for Nvidia display adapters (GPU)

Sony CEO Opens Up on PlayStation 5 Pricing Strategy - Essentially Sports

Sony is finally opening-up on its next-gen console, PlayStation 5, after having kept mum for most of the year. With a game reveal showcase now confirmed for June 4, we can expect further news to start flowing in. While next week’s showcase is sure to give us something about the console itself, do not expect too much. Sony is bound to continue keeping its cards close to its chest. However, Sony PlayStation’s CEO, Jim Ryan, did touch upon a few elements regarding the console in a sit-down with gamesindustry.biz.

The reports, mostly unconfirmed, about PlayStation 5 have surely given the console’s loyal community a bit of anxiety. The first half of the year has more or less been about how Sony has run into trouble due to the pandemic ravaging our globe. Be it a possibility of a delay, or the disturbance in the production capacity of the new console, the news was pretty grim until this month.

The biggest letdown was perhaps the news report claiming the launch price of the console could be around $450-500. A Bloomberg report claimed the high production cost of the units would force Sony to hike up the launch price. But would that work for them? After all, back when it hiked up the launch price for PS3, it suffered dearly.

However, this month has brought in a much-needed sense of relief among the fans. The tech giant’s financial reports confirmed the console launch was on track. Moreover, we also got an official word of a “compelling lineup of games.”

PlayStation 5 CEO assures “best possible value proposition”

In his chat with gamesindustry.biz, Jim Ryan did brush upon the subject of the price, unsurprisingly, though, refrained from giving us an estimate. He did admit that times are a bit unusual, and vowed to offer the “best possible value proposition.”

“Now, who knows how this recession is going to look, how deep it will be and how long it will last.

“I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don’t necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games… all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform.”

While this sounds quite noncommittal, let’s hope the PS3 debacle compels them to keep the price on the lower end of the spectrum. However, there is a good possibility that Sony will hike the price up from the PS4 launch ($399). Unless, of course, it is ready to bear some significant initial losses.

“Increase in development budgets”

Ryan admitted that the new-age graphical capabilities of the PlayStation 5 will also increase the game-development costs.

“I think, to the extent that the technology enables the graphics side of it to become more interesting and life-like, (the games) will become slightly more human-intensive and capital intensive to produce. So yes, we think there probably will be an increase in development budgets. We don’t see it as being a massive increase, and that’s why we want to do more faster than we have ever done before, to provide a fertile install base for people who make games to be able to monetize against.”

We better expect the next-gen console and games to put a strain on our wallets. Well, at least in the initial phase. But then again, it has never really been all that cheap, has it?

Windows 10 May 2020 Update launch is finally here: download it here - Express.co.uk

After months and months of rumours and whispers, Windows 10's first blockbuster update of the year has finally landed. Microsoft typically rolls out two feature-packed upgrades to its immensely-popular operating system each year, one in spring and one in autumn. As the name suggests, the Windows 10 Maye 2020 Update is the former. This packed upgrade includes a swathe of new features designed to improve the overall experience of using your PC – whether that's a traditional monitor-and-mouse desktop set-up, a laptop, or a two-in-one device – like the Microsoft Surface range. The new update contains changes to the Search menu, Cortana, as well as the option to go totally password-free. Provided you're not one of the handful of users that

As with every substantial update to Windows 10, Microsoft isn't rolling out to everyone on launch day. Instead, it will be a staggered roll out over the coming days and weeks. This is designed to ensure that its servers can take the strain. It also means the Redmond-based company has time to work out any kinks in the release.

Explaining more, Microsoft said: "To ensure you continue to have a reliable, productive experience with your Windows 10 devices, we are taking a measured and phased approach to how we offer the May Update, initially limiting availability to those devices running Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 who seek the update via Windows Update."

Once you have managed to download the May 2020 update. Here are some the new features you'll find coming to your PC.

Faster and easier connections: Microsoft says it is making it easier and faster to pair your Bluetooth devices to your compatible Windows 10 PC. Now you can take care of everything in notifications (instead of Settings) with fewer steps.

Go passwordless: For improved security and a simple sign-in experience, you can sign in with your face, fingerprint or PIN? It’s easier than ever to enable passwordless sign-in for your Microsoft accounts: just go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options on your Windows 10 PC and select On under Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts.

Name your desktops: Now instead of “Desktop 1” or “Desktop 2” you can give your Virtual Desktops more descriptive, clever, or amusing names. Using Virtual Desktop in Windows 10 allows you to expand your desktop beyond the physical limitations of the space, organize groups of related tasks, and easily switch between them. Tackling what you want to—when you want to—just got a whole lot easier.

Stay on top of your numbers: Keep the calculator close by—now you can choose to keep the Calculator app on top of everything.

Notepad newness: The beloved 30-year-old text editor has some small but mighty improvements. There’s now wrap around find/replace, quick text zooming, and when you see an asterisk in the title bar you’ll know you have unsaved changes.

Bringing your smartphone and Windows PC closer together: The May 2020 Update brings the popular Your Phone app’s Calls feature to ARM supported PCs from Microsoft and our OEM partners.

Find that cursor faster: Windows Magnifier has a new ability to keep the text cursor in the centre of the screen, making it easier and smoother to type.

More Eye Control: Drag and drop is now here. Microsoft has made improvements to the pause experience and provided some new opportunities in Settings.

PS5 Reveal Event: Sony Wants Fans to Be As Excited As if They Were in an E3 Auditorium - Push Square

PS5 PlayStation 5 Sony 1

Coronavirus has put an end to the physical game events of old, meaning that Sony will showcase the PlayStation 5’s software roster during a pre-recorded livestream. The manufacturer has, historically, been known for its glitzy stage shows – and it wants to create the same levels of excitement next week.

“Normally you would be in Los Angeles in some auditorium with 2,000 other people,” boss Jim Ryan told the BBC. “You'd be able to cut the adrenaline and the testosterone with a knife. We've got to find a way to do that and give the community little bit of a jolt. When you watch the show next week, I think you'll see that we've been able to do that.”

He made a similar statement when speaking with Games Industry.biz: “That’s the challenge I've set the teams: try to get that community, the 100 million people – and all of the people who don't have a PlayStation we'd like to talk to – just as excited as if they were in the E3 auditorium, or if they were watching the stream.”

There were rumours that the Japanese giant had planned to host this briefing earlier in the year, but lockdown restrictions meant it wasn’t able to produce it with the level of polish that it deserved. Reading between the lines of Ryan’s comments, he’s quietly confident with what the company’s concocted. Now we have to wait to see it for ourselves.

Android 11 reveal delayed as Google pushes back its big event - TechRadar

We had been looking forward to hearing a lot more about Android 11 this coming Wednesday, June 3 – and maybe trying it out – but Google has now decided to push back the launch of the public beta.

That's according to a tweet from the official Android Developers account, which says: "We are excited to tell you more about Android 11, but now is not the time to celebrate."

It's not explicitly stated, but it would appear the ongoing unrest and protests in the US, sparked by the death of George Floyd, are the reason behind the move. Google will apparently be "back with more on Android 11, soon".

  • The latest Chrome updates
  • PS4 games have a new requirement
  • OnePlus cancels its McLaren deal

That leaves us with no official launch date for the Android 11 public beta, though a developer preview has been available since February. It remains to be seen whether the full release of Android 11 will still launch as planned in the third quarter of 2020.

The Android 11 schedule

Google traditionally uses its IO developer conference in May to tell us all about the latest version of Android. Given the global pandemic that we're all living through, the 2020 edition got moved online and then canceled completely.

Nevertheless, we were expecting the roll out of Android 11 to happen more or less on the same schedule as previous editions of the mobile OS (in fact, the developer preview launched earlier than normal).

The developer preview is usually followed by a public beta that anyone can test – which was due to appear on June 3 – and then Google tends to push out the finished version of the software a few months later, before the annual launch of its Pixel phones.

World events have put that schedule in doubt, so we're still waiting for a proper unveiling of Android 11 (though we do know a little bit about what's coming). As soon as Google announces a new date for the Android 11 public beta, we'll let you know.

The Android 11 beta launch event has been postponed - Engadget

Android 11
Google

The launch of the Android 11 beta had already been delayed after Google I/O was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and now it’s getting pushed back again. A virtual launch event for the start of the beta release was scheduled for Wednesday, but Google has postponed it noting that “now is not the time to celebrate.”

You can take your pick of reasons why not to be in a party mood for the event Google had planned, including an hour-long keynote speech, Q&A and developer sessions. For now, the team says they’ll be back with more information “soon.”

Google delays the Android 11 Beta announcement as protests roil US cities - The Verge

Google had been planning to unveil new features coming in Android 11 on June 3rd, but it has decided to delay the unveiling. In a tweet on Friday evening, Android’s developer account said that “We are excited to tell you more about Android 11, but now is not the time to celebrate.” Google says that it will “be back with more on Android 11, soon,” but did not say when that might be.

Although Google doesn’t explicitly say why, the reason is very clear. The announcement comes as many American cities are filled with protests, looting, and fires. The response to the death of George Floyd in Minnesota has extended well beyond the conflict in Minneapolis. The Bay area where Google and most of its employees are based has seen major conflicts in both San Jose and Oakland the evening when Google made the call its event. It’s a brutal night here in the Bay area.

As our sister site Vox.com explains:

Protests against the use of excessive force by law enforcement have surfaced around the country, including in Minneapolis, Denver, Los Angeles, Louisville, and Columbus, following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was arrested on suspicion of forgery and pinned to the ground by police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was later pronounced dead at a regional hospital.

The incident follows a series of deaths of unarmed black individuals this year, including 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, who was fatally shot by police in her Louisville, Kentucky, home in March, and Ahmaud Arbery, who was jogging in an Atlanta, Georgia, neighborhood before being shot by two white men in February.

The uprisings and the government’s response to them have become incredibly serious in the past few days. Not only have feds flown an unarmed Predator drone over Minneapolis, the President’s tweet about looting led to Twitter putting it behind a warning about “glorifying violence.” That kicked off a chain of events ending with an executive order that, if it had a chance of surviving court challenges, would fundamentally change the nature of the entire internet.

On a practical level, Google surely realized few people would be in the mood to get excited about new features in Android. On a human level, delaying the launch was simply the right thing to do.

OnePlus McLaren phones are officially cancelled - TechRadar India

The rumors were true: a McLaren official has confirmed that there won’t be another OnePlus McLaren edition.

The luxury automaker recently dropped the OnePlus logo from its Partners page, leading to speculation that the refined and pricey OnePlus McLaren editions had been cancelled. The car company finally confirmed that there wouldn’t be another partner-produced version of a OnePlus phone in a statement sent to Android Authority:

“Our partnership with OnePlus, which came to its scheduled conclusion recently, has been a highly successful collaboration between two iconic and innovative brands,” McLaren’s statement read. “Since the start of this partnership in 2018, OnePlus has been a supportive, valued partner and we wish them well and hope to see them in the future.”

We’d seen exactly two of the fancy editions starting with the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition in 2018 and followed with the OnePlus 7T McLaren Edition

At CES 2020, the phonemaker showed off the OnePlus Concept One that featured McLaren window tech to hide its rear cameras, but that wasn’t a consumer-ready device. Since we hadn’t heard whether a new McLaren Edition would accompany the next OnePlus 8T generation, we weren’t sure if we’d see another again. That question seems to have been answered.

The best time to cancel a fancy OnePlus McLaren edition?

Of course, we’re not in the best market for costlier versions of flagship phones anyway, and each generation of the once-affordable OnePlus handsets have been pricier than the last.

Thus, it was probably time for the OnePlus McLaren editions to reach the end of the road anyway and stop trying to compete with the likes of the Huawei Mate 30 Porsche edition and the Oppo Find X Lamborghini. But given the seemingly amicable splitting of ways between OnePlus and McLaren, perhaps a partnership sometime in the future is possible – when the market’s ready for another luxury carmaker’s take on a smartphone.
