Wordle players 'livid' over latest answer and insist they're 'not having it' - Chronicle Live

It would surely be the first time in history that a revolt has begun over a word puzzle - but Wordle players have threatened an "uprising" over the latest answer to the game.

In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, the aim of the game in Wordle is to guess a mystery five-letter word in just six tries, with coloured tiles indicating how many letters you've managed to guess correctly with each attempt. The puzzle refreshes every day, and all players are tasked with guessing the same word - meaning that millions are united in their fury when a particularly tricky or controversial answer crops up.

That was certainly the case when the team behind Wordle did the unthinkable and used - you might want to be sitting down for this - an acronym for today's chosen word (Sunday, April 9). If you're a daily Wordle aficionado and haven't yet got round to today's puzzle, beware - spoilers lie below.

The word was 'SNAFU' - originally an acronym for the sarcastic expression 'Situation normal: all f***** up' which is believed to have originated in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Most commonly heard over in the US, the military slang is now more widely used to refer to a mistake, problem or chaotic situation.

But Wordle players were definitely not impressed that it was used as the answer to Sunday's game, with thousands of players taking to social media to unleash their rage. "Nah. Not having it. Not a a word!" one person complained on Twitter.

Another remarked: "Livid. That's all I'm going to say on the matter."

"I remember it well, that Easter when the great Wordle uprising began," someone else joked.

"Normally I don't wish ill fortune on anyone, but to the person responsible for today's Wordle, may your chickens turn to emus and kick your dunny down," another frustrated player said.

Even comedian Jason Manford had some strong opinions on the situation, tweeting: "It's an acronym and I will NOT have it on Wordle! Absolute joke. They should be ashamed of themselves."
