PS5's Sold At A Loss As Scalpers Targeted - Dark Horizons

Ps5 Pro With Two Gpus In The Works

Sony Investors have been informed that the PlayStation 5 has so far made a loss on sales.

Bloomberg reports that with 4.5 million consoles sold so far, Sony is taking a hit on the machines by placing them at a “strategic price point” – meaning it costs more to manufacture them than they are being sold for.

A combination of competition and high demand for scarce components included in the console’s manufacture has driven up prices of each console to a reported $450 to make.

Thus the full edition of the machine breaks even, but the Digital Edition at $399 nets a loss. However, when combined with revenue from game sales across the PS4 and PS5 platforms, any shortfall has apparently been covered for.

Meanwhile, there’s the issue of scalpers which is still ongoing. A recent report (via The Guardian) indicated some of these profiteering types used an exploit and bots to allow them to buy thousands of consoles before they were even listed for sale by major retailers.

This led to a group of Scottish MPs recently tabling a motion, similar to the laws on ticket scalping, that would make the resale of goods bought using an automated bot an illegal activity. In this case, the motion specifically cited “games consoles and computer components”.
