The "Cyberpunk 2077" Reviews Are In - Dark Horizons

Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed Until November

The first reviews are out for CD Projekt Red’s long-awaited “Cyberpunk 2077,” arguably the year’s biggest video game from a developer famous for its celebrated “The Witcher” trilogy.

As of writing, the game holds a 91/100 on Metacritic on PC – one of the highest scores of any title this year. However reviewers have only had time to play a fraction of the game as review codes wee handed out with a rather scattershot approach only a few days ago.

For a game that is supposed to run at something around 175 hours for its campaign and side quests – only a fraction of the title has been played. In addition no console versions were available for pre-release reviewing so no word as to how those will perform, but leaked video of footage from them indicate both the Series X and PS5 will hit a regular 60fps with the game.

That said reviews unanimously praise the game’s scale and scope, world building, role playing elements, freedom of choice, character quests, use of multiple approaches to problems, impact of side quests on the main narrative and so forth.

There has been an issue which has been making headlines though – bugs, and lots of them. Despite numerous delays by the company to work out the kinks, pre-review copies were plagued with a myriad of issues. The game has already scored a Day Zero patch correcting many of the bugs, but for now it sounds like it will have issues for at least a little while.

Yahoo also pointed out the film’s problematic issues of race and gender representation from gangs based on racial identities and regressive handling of sex and gender which are antithetical to the melting pot concept of Night City and cyberpunk in general. The reviewer says: “the future feels like it was extrapolated exclusively from the forward-thinking but still limited minds of a bunch of smart white guys from the 1990s.”

A consensus seems to be that this may not have met all expectations, and falls slightly short of the masterpiece “Witcher 3” is still held up as, but is not far from it and is a very serious Game of the Year contender which will enhance its case in a few months when the various bugs are all ironed out.
