The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles has gone so badly that CD Projekt has had to offer refunds, with patches continuing into February.
Cyberpunk 2077 might be the fastest-selling PC game ever but its launch has been one of the most troubled of any major game in recent history, especially on the ordinary Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
All versions of the game have been riddled with bugs but performance on the original Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (i.e. not the more powerful PS4 Pro and Xbox One X) has been especially poor, with broken graphics and unreliable frame rates.
This seems particularly unforgiveable given CD Projekt purposefully refused to show the game running on the base versions of the consoles before launch, a fact they’ve now apologised for.

CD Projekt still only ever showed the game running on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro (and Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5) a few weeks before release, which seems especially absurd given the game took eight years to make and has been delayed multiple times.
Clearly it should’ve been delayed at least one more time but since that moment has passed CD Projekt has instead issued an apology for the whole fiasco.
‘We would like to start by apologising to you for not showing the game on base last gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase’, reads the message on Twitter. ‘We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.’
‘We will fix bugs and crashes, and improve the overall experience. The first round of updates has just been released and the next one is coming within the next seven days. Expect more, as we will update frequently whenever new improvements are ready,’ continues the text.
‘After the holidays, we’ll continue working – we’ll release two large patches with Patch #1 in January. This will be followed by Patch #2 in February’, promises CD Projekt.’
That is a long time to wait for a game to work properly and so CD Projekt is also offering refunds on consoles, at least for the next week.
‘We would always like everyone who buys our games to be satisfied with their purchase’, reads the tweet. ‘We would appreciate if you would give us a chance, but if you are not pleased with the game on your console and don’t want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy.’
The message suggests refunding the game where you bought it, digitally or physically, and if that doesn’t work then email helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com up until December 21.
The whole situation is all the more damning because the problems come despite CD Projekt having put their developers through the ‘crunch’ to get the game finished, despite initially promising that they wouldn’t.
Performance issues at launch do tend to get forgotten about fairly quickly, if they’re patched in time, but what was once considered to be the most anticipated game of 2020 has become something of a disaster and the game’s entire legacy now hangs in the balance.
