AirPods With Camera Modules To Reportedly Enter Mass Production In 2026, Will Be Designed To Deliver An Enhanced Spatial Audio Experience - Wccftech

Apple has plans to introduce an overhauled version of its AirPods, at least according to one analyst. While the design of the wireless earbuds is not mentioned, it is reported that these will feature camera modules, with mass production expected to happen in 2026. As for why the company would incorporate these sensors in an audio product, it likely has to do with its spatial audio push, improving its ecosystem and creating an enhanced synergy with the rest of its devices. Here are more details that you might be interested in.

New 2026 AirPods will reportedly feature an IR camera similar to the iPhone’s Face ID receiver, sensors will detect environmental changes

The cameras expected to be found in the new AirPods model for 2026 will not be the same as the sensors that we see on iPhones. Instead, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has commented on his latest Medium blog that the cameras will sport an IR blaster, with the AirPods said to work seamlessly with the Apple Vision Pro and upcoming AR headsets to enhance the spatial audio experience. Details of how Apple’s in-ear earbuds will function have been described below.

“The new AirPods is expected to be used with Vision Pro and future Apple headsets to enhance the user experience of spatial audio and strengthen the spatial computing ecosystem. For example, when a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing this new AirPods, if users turn their heads to look in a specific direction, the sound source in that direction can be emphasized to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience.”

It is worth noting that Apple has already filed patents in this particular area, and the IR cameras on the AirPods will be responsible for detecting changes in the environment. With the enabling of in-air gestures, the interaction between users and devices will see improvements. As for manufacturing, Foxconn is reportedly the NPI, or new product introduction supplier for the AirPods, with an output capacity of 10 million units.

It is worth noting that actual orders will depend on demand, but it is still impressive to see that Apple is potentially bringing cameras to something that are exceptionally small in size. Hopefully, the company will not suspend development work on these and will provide its customers with a proper set of wireless earbuds.

The floral midi dress tips to take from the royals - The Telegraph

It’s that time of year, when the calendar fills up with weddings, garden parties and smart sporting occasions such as Wimbledon and Henley Royal Regatta.

From a style perspective, this means just one thing: it’s floral midi dress season. Yes, there are many appealing alternatives – relaxed suiting, a co-ord, even a solid coloured midi – but many of us return to florals because they feel right for summer occasions. There’s something about flowers being in bloom and wearing flowers on our clothes that makes sense.

No wonder, then, that the Royals rely on these prints so heavily at this time of year. The Queen, Princess Beatrice, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Zara Tindall, Lady Louise Windsor – all have championed the look in recent weeks.

And yet finding a truly beautiful print combined with a flattering dress silhouette is not an easy task. Far too many on the high street do little for the wearer, clinging in the wrong places, or have awkward cut-outs or a too-high slit. And beware the backless dress, with which wearing a bra is impossible. The Royals seem to navigate all of this effortlessly.

Of course, they have a couple of advantages: style advisors or personal shoppers, who help with planning, acquiring and coordinating outfits for specific events. They also have generous budgets that allow them to shop designer brands like Zimmermann, or commission bespoke versions of Emilia Wickstead or Laura Green dresses.

Still, there’s plenty we can learn from them. Lesson one is that there are florals and there are florals. A generic ditsy print doesn’t look particularly special; something more thoughtfully designed, like Suzannah London’s which are created in partnership with artists, will stand out. Don’t feel you have to lean towards a particular aesthetic, there’s something out there for everyone: retro, graphic, painterly, vintage-inspired.

They don’t have to be expensive either; all of Boden’s prints are designed in house. So are those at British dress brand St Clair. “I think an oversized, blowsy floral is so romantic and feels contemporary too,” says Blaire Donald, founder of St Clair. “Our prints are all original, hand-painted in watercolour and inspired by English flowers.”

Lesson two: fitted or tailored silhouettes keep the look elegant; anything too blowsy may run the risk of looking frumpy. Consider getting a local seamstress via The Seam to alter a high street dress to fit you perfectly.

“To keep it modern and fresh I always combine one of our signature artist collaboration florals with a slick silhouette, and made in a cloth which offers ease, effortlessness and versatility.” says Suzannah Crabb, founder of her (eponymous) brand Suzannah London .

And on that note, lesson three is that prints will always look better on a quality fabric, ideally linen, silk, cotton poplin or a blend. They’ll also feel cooler and more comfortable to wear.

If you can’t stretch to a £1000+ style from Suzannah, Zimmermann or Beulah, brands which have become staples in the collective royal wardrobe, consider renting one for a fraction of the price. Hurr has the strongest offering.

For something you’ll wear time and time again, look to the higher end of the high street, where you’ll find a strong floral occasionwear offering at Cefinn, Me+Em and Rixo – all Royal-approved.

Farm Rio, Tresse and Justine Tabak are still niche enough that you’re unlikely to encounter anyone else wearing the same thing. The same applies to Joanie’s upcoming collaboration with 60s and 70s textile designer and Hockney muse Celia Birtwell – the collection drops on 24th July.

Whatever your budget, occasion and taste, there will be a floral take to get you through the summer in style – and for summers to come too.

The big picture: Abdulhamid Kircher reflects on his traumatic family history - The Guardian

The New York-based photographer Abdulhamid Kircher, 28, took this picture of his father’s girlfriend, Dilo, in Istanbul. For much of his childhood, spent in Germany and the US, Kircher was estranged from his father – who served time in prison for drugs offences and attempted murder – but they were reacquainted when he was 15. For a decade or more after that Kircher photographed the people and places in his father’s wayward life.

In this picture, he explains: “Dilo is getting her hair dyed in a salon we went to almost every night for two weeks. My father and the owner of the salon were upstairs, smoking weed and snorting cocaine. We were staying with Dilo’s father in his apartment, so coming to the salon was a way for them to escape and continue their Berlin lifestyle, doing drugs as they pleased.”

Nearly all the images in Kircher’s book, Rotting from Within, have this kind of raw autobiographical edge. They see him examining his place in his father’s world, and retracing the traumas that were part of his legacy.

Using his camera, he became fascinated with the experiences that had shaped three generations of his family, in particular the effect of his grandparents’ uprooting themselves from rural Turkey to seek a new life in Germany. The challenges of assimilation led to violence: “My father and his siblings were the first generation to be raised in Berlin,” he said in one interview. “Moving to such a complex city, I am sure, was very overwhelming for my grandparents. They didn’t really know how to keep everything in control, especially their kids.”

Kircher’s father was never told that he was loved, or taught to deal with his frustrations. “Most of the people in my life,” Kircher says, “especially the men, never learned to speak about their feelings or struggles.” His book finds a visual language to excavate some of those layers of denial.

ICYMI: the week's 7 biggest tech stories from Google Pixel event details to a pair of new best Bluetooth speaker contenders - TechRadar

A Beat Pill, Everboom, Surface Pro 11, and the Smart Home Week logo all together
(Image credit: Future / Beats / Ultimate Ears / Microsoft)

This week, we hosted our very own Smart Home Week to celebrate the latest and greatest tech in the smart home sector and give you tips on how to use your gadgets more effectively.

We also saw the arrival of some brilliant new Bluetooth speakers, a Surface Pro that finally gives the iPad Pro a run for its money and several event date announcements from Prime Day to the Pixel 9 launch event.

So, in case you missed it, here are the seven biggest tech news stories from the past seven days.

7. We hosted Smart Home Week 2024

We launched our new Smart Home Week for 2024, where we've given you all the hottest tips and tricks for setting up and making the most of your smart home. This includes guides on how to set up and use Alexa sound detection and our thoughts on new products like this Bird Buddy smart bird feeder.

We've also asked experts for insights into how safe smart home security cameras really are and challenged both Google and Apple to step up to the plate with new hardware before Amazon pulls even further ahead in the race to dominate the smart home market.

6. We reviewed the Surface Pro 11 – and called it the best Surface ever

A Microsoft Surface Pro 11 on a desk

(Image credit: Future / John Loeffler)

Thanks to its "snappy performance, excellent battery life, improved compatibility, and new AI-powered apps that will only get better with time," we've already dubbed the new Microsoft Surface Pro 11 the best surface ever.

Starting at $999.99 /£1,049.99 / AU$1,899.99 this tablet isn't a mere tablet; it's a bonafide Windows 11 OS-powered machine with a 10-core Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus chip, 2.8K LCD display, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD – though you can upgrade to a model with a 12-core Snapdragon X Elite chip, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD starting at $1,499.99 / £1,549 / AU$2,699.

This is the first proper competition the iPad Pro has ever had, and as we say in our review, "Apple should absolutely be worried."

5. Prime Day 2024 dates were revealed

After accidentally leaking the dates for Prime Day 2024, Amazon officially confirmed that Amazon Prime Day will take place on July 16 - 17 in the US and UK.

As part of the sale, Prime members can expect to see literally thousands of deals across a wide range of popular tech brands, including SonySamsung, Ninja, GHD, Fitbit, Oral-B, Bose, and Shark, to name just a few.

If you're not a Prime member already (and haven't subscribed to Prime previously), you can sign up for a 30-day free trial below to take advantage of a handful of early deals that have appeared and be ready for the full sale when it goes live in a few weeks.

4. Google and Samsung set dates for their next phone launch events

Both Google and Samsung announced the dates of their next tech events, with Galaxy Unpacked landing sooner on  July 10, 2024, with an event starting at 9 am ET / 6 am PT/ 2 pm BST.

We expect to see the arrival of its new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, a successor to the Galaxy Watch 6 of some kind (maybe even a Galaxy Watch Ultra), and the highly anticipated  Galaxy Ring.

Google's announcement is more surprising, as instead of October its Pixel phone launch event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13. We know it's a Pixel phone event as well (rather than for some other hardware) as a promo clip shows us a look at the Pixel 9 Pro, and is titled "AI... meet IX" – IX being nine in Roman numerals.

3. Ultimate Ears and Beats gave us bombastic new speakers

The Ultimate Ears Everboom being held by partiers on a boat

As we head into the warmer Summer months (at least here in the UK, where this writer is based), that means one thing: outdoor parties. Be it on the beach, by the pool, in the garden, or at a park, there's nothing better than being outdoors soaking in the rays and enjoying a BBQ. And if you want to keep everyone entertained with music, there are two new contenders on the scene.

The new Beats Pill landed, and while it looks similar to the last-gen model, its makers promise big things. It's apparently louder, boasts IP67 dust and water resistance, has Bluetooth 5.3, supports USB-C for both audio passthrough and charging, and it costs just $149.99 / £149.99 / AU$249.95.

Then there's Ultimate Ears' new Everboom. This 360-speaker can get truly loud and still delivers a solid sonic performance with only some distortion at its max 89-decibel volume. At a more moderate loudness (which is where you'll be listening anyway), it sounds fantastic. Plus, it boasts IP67 dust and water resistance, and it floats, making it perfect for any gathering where it might take a dip.

2. Leaks showed us a Terrific Superman movie character

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s a couple of new huge updates on James Gunn’s Superman movie. The forthcoming DC film is currently being shot on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio – and, as many of us expected, some big leaks have emerged as filming on the DCU Chapter One flick continues apace.

And when we say big, we mean big. Not only did a new Superman movie leak reveal a new look at the Man of Steel’s costume, but it gave us our very first look at one of his fellow heroes in Mr. Terrific. A few days later, the same character was seen encountering Clark Ken’s most loyal friend in a Superman movie video leak, too. Let’s hope some surprises are saved for the Kryptonian’s return to the big screen.

1. The UploadVR Summer Showcase 2024 served VR gaming goodness

Meta might not have held its summer Quest Gaming Showcase this year, but the 2024 UplaodVR Summer Showcase introduced us to games and apps headed to the best VR headsets in the coming months.

The hour-long event had a lot to show off, but some highlights for us included Lovesick – a punk-themed VR escape room, Pencil! – a mixed-reality drawing teacher and assistive tool; and Cold VR – a reverse Superhot where time speeds up when you slow down.

DBD could finally get heavily requested killer judging by crossover leaks - Video Gamer

Video Gamer is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Prices subject to change. Learn more

Dead By Daylight is a fantastic multiplayer experience, and the best part about it is all of the collaborations with iconic horror properties. The game has previously collaborated with the likes of Alien, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and Halloween, and it’s now possible DBD could finally be getting a heavily-requested killer thanks to leaks showing they will be part of crossovers with other video games.

There is a lot to anticipate in the very near future for Dead By Daylight. There is the release of the Tomb Raider Chapter 32.5 paragraph in July along with Tome 20, and we are also set for a collaboration with CastleVania for Chapter 33 in August. As if that wasn’t enough, the release date for The Casting of Frank Stone spin-off has potentially leaked, too, and it’s closer than you’d think.

While all of the above is exciting, it’s upcoming content we already know about. Fans always have wishlists of who they’d like to see enter the fog, and it now seems likely that Friday the 13th’s Jason Vorhees will join the world of DBD.

Dead By Daylight might finally get Jason Voorhees killer

It’s possible that Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th could become a killer in Dead By Daylight. DBD fans have been clamouring for the slasher icon to join the fog, and it now seems likely to happen.

The reason it previously wasn’t possible for the slasher to join Dead By Daylight was because of legal issues. However, these legal issues have been resolved, and, in May of this year, Horror Inc. announced an expansion of the Friday The 13th franchise called the Jason Universe.

The idea of the Jason Universe is to bring the slasher icon to other properties. In the world of video games, this has begun with the hockey-masked killer appearing in MultiVersus.

Aside from MultiVersus, leaks show that the horror icon will be in Fortnite for presumably the Fortnitemares event. There is also speculation that there will be a Call of Duty x Friday the 13th crossover this Halloween because the official JasonUniverse13 Twitter account follows Call of Duty.

In regard to Dead By Daylight, game director, Mathieu Cote, has previously spoken of BeHaviour Interactive’s desire to add Jason Voorhees as a killer. In 2020, Cote told Comicbook, “Jason has a standing invitation to Dead by Daylight… Whenever he’s ready, whenever he’s done with whatever he’s got going on in his life right now, he can come in”.

Although not explicitly mentioned, the above statement likely implied Jason can enter the fog once the legal turmoil is over with. In addition to verbally expressing a desire to add the Friday the 13th poster boy in interviews, BeHaviour Interactive conducted a survey in 2023 asking fans if they want Jason Vorhees.

With the Jason Universe bringing Voorhees to other games, it’s now clear that he can join the world of Dead By Daylight. While nothing is official or leaked as of writing, there is speculation that he could be the licensed killer for the paragraph chapter in March 2025 as part of the year 9 roadmap. This would make sense as the Jason Vorhees killer is iconic, but there’s no iconic survivor/protagonist such as Ellen Ripley for Alien.

Apple says it will make it easier to change your iPhone battery - The Independent

Apple will soon make it easier to replace batteries and screens as it revealed a new focus on trying to make its iPhones and other devices live as long as possible.

The company will now offer more information on those displays and batteries when they are put into an iPhone.

It is part of a range of new updates focused on longevity. It announced that it will expand its “self-service repair diagnostics” tool that lets people analyse their own devices for issues, as well as publishing a new paper called “Longevity, by Design” that attempts to explain how it tries to extend the life of those devices.

That document says that it is “always working to create the best experience for our customers, which is why we design products that last”. It says that aim starts at the beginning of the deisgn process and integrates predictions of future usage.

Apple has occasionally faced suggestions that it builds “planned obsolescence” into its devices, so that they go out of date quickly and then users are encouraged to buy new ones. But the company said that data showed its devices are actually longer-lasting than competitors: iPhones retain 40 per cent more value than the competition, it said, and hundreds of millions of them are in use despite being more than five years old.

Some of Apple’s work to prolong the life of its devices has been on repairability, though it has occasionally said that it conflicts with building the devices to last in the first place. Now, it has announced new tools that will make those devices function better when they are repaired.

Apple uses a system called parts pairing that means that, for instance, an iPhone is linked to its screen and battery and that those cannot be swapped around. Apple says that it is for the benefit of the user since it means the display has been specifically calibrated on that device, for instance.

Now, however, it will limit some of those restrictions.

At the moment, a replacement display cannot use Apple’s True Tone feature, which adjusts to the ambient light. Batteries also miss out on software features such as analysis of their battery health.

Now, third-party replacements will receive some of those same features. True Tone will be turned on and Apple will give better battery health metrics about third-party batteries.

The feature does come with some caveats, however. Apple will warn that the True Tone will only be accurate “to the best performance that can be provided” and the battery features will warn that they cannot be verified.

Apple said that some battery replacements are sold as new but are in fact second-hand, for instance. That could mean that information on their health and how many times they have been charged up could be inaccurate.

Samsung infographic on the Galaxy Z Fold suggests a thinner and lighter Z Fold6 - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

On the metaphorical eve of the Galaxy Z Fold6 announcement (July 10), Samsung has released an infographic, dedicated to the progress of its Fold series.

It goes device by device, starting with the Galaxy Fold of 2019, and ending with the Galaxy Z Fold5. The theme of the infographic is the reduction of thickness and weight while retaining structural integrity.

The theme strongly suggests a thinner and lighter Galaxy Z Fold6 is coming in two weeks.

Rumors have suggested as much, and it's logical to assume that Samsung will aim for a lower weight. Per reports, the Galaxy Z Fold6 will weight 239g - the same as the OnePlus Open.

Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC: In-Box AI Experiences - Thurrott.com

A painterly Paul, thanks to Windows Studio Effects

With Copilot+ PC, Microsoft is shifting the marketing of Windows 11 on Arm from efficiency and uptime to AI. I think that’s a mistake: This platform offers a unique combination of performance, efficiency, and battery life in thin and light laptops that go a long way toward undermining the years-long advantages of the Apple Silicon-based MacBook Air. More to the point, the AI experiences included with Copilot+ PCs are underwhelming and provide no rationale for spending $1000 or more on a new laptop.

This is especially true now that the only truly compelling Copilot+ PC AI experience, Recall, was stripped out of the product at literally the last minute: Recall would have utilized several of the small language models (SLMs) pre-installed on Copilot+ PCs like the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x 14 Gen 9 I’m now reviewing to provide a comprehensive solution for finding documents, websites, and other information you worked with in the past. But now we have to wait: Recall will be made available first for testing through the Windows Insider Program, which no Copilot+ PC buyer should risk participating in, and then be made available in preview later this year.

Until then, the AI pickings, so to speak, are slim.

Copilot+ PCs ship with the initial version of Windows 11 version 24H2, which anyone can upgrade to now if desired, and that provides a few neat updates compared to its predecessors. But Copilot+ PCs differentiate themselves–or at least try to–from other 24H2-based PCs by offering a small range of AI experiences that utilize the Snapdragon X’s powerful NPU (Neural Processing Unit) and its alleged 40+ pre-installed SMLs.

This won’t take long.

Automatic super resolution (Auto SR)

Auto SR (super resolution) upscales video games in real time, and it’s unique to Copilot+ PCs. I’ve experienced this playing two games, so far, Doom (2016) and Control, as noted in Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC: Gaming on the Go. From what I can tell, it allows you to run emulated x64 games at lower resolutions, which improves the performance and frame rate, while using AI to enhance the visual quality so it appears that the game is running at a higher resolution.

When it works, it works well: I spent about two hours playing Doom yesterday after and was really impressed with the seamless performance and visual quality. But like so many Copilot+ PC features, there are limitations: Auto SR only works with games, though it appears that this technology could benefit video playback too. And only with select games, about 100 or so during this launch period. And it requires a lot of fiddling.

I *have *learned one thing since my initial Auto SR experience: You can configure it on the fly for specific games, and that’s why my Doom experience was so good. There’s an interface in Settings > System > Display > Graphics where you can specify your GPU preference, toggle Auto SR, and optimized for windowed play on a game-by-game basis.

In other words, if you’re not getting the performance and visual quality you want, look up the game and enable “Automatic super resolution.” It just may do the trick and make an unplayable game, playable.

Cocreator in Paint

If you’re familiar with the AI features that Microsoft has added to Paint over the past year or so–Remove Background and Image Creator, both of which are terrific–then Cocreator will make some sense. The difference, of course, is that those previous two features don’t require or even use the NPU, where Cocreator does. So you won’t see a Cocreator option in Paint’s pseudo-ribbon unless you have a Copilot+ PC.

Cocreator lets you input a text prompt (like Image Creator, and optimized for English for now) and/or a drawing of your own creation–better done with a stylus on a 2-in-1 tablet, I imagine–and then it uses both as the source for a more professional looking creation. I’ve seen Microsoft and Qualcomm deliver the same demo of this feature several times already where they create a finger painting-like image of a turtle and then Cocreator turns it into a, um, better image of a turtle.

But I’m working off a laptop here, so I created a simple image of the earth with some stars and the moon. You know, like a child. And then I added the prompt “Add a spaceship flying by the earth on the bottom.”. And before I could tap Enter, it started generating an image. Which was pretty terrible.

You can change the style to watercolor, oil painting, ink sketch, anime, or pixel art. And there’s a Creativity slider whose use is not clear. So I looked it up: “Lower creativity means less AI input and the output will be closer to your sketch. Higher creativity means more AI input and the output will be more imaginative and diverse.” And sure enough, switching that to 95 on the slider made a nice difference.

But the image was still off. That made me wonder whether this tool could be used to take a high-quality image and riff off that. So I opened up an image that Copilot had made for me previously. And I added a prompt to see what would happen. OK, that is interesting. And dialing the Creativity slider up and down did make a difference.

But I’m not sure how useful this is: I use Copilot’s image creation feature (Designer) every day and really like it. This seems more … random. And a lot less useful.

Image Creator in Photos

As with Paint, anyone with Windows 11 can access a handful of (non-NPU) features in the Photos app, like Generative Erase, and Background Blur, Remove, and Replace.

With a Copilot+ PC, you get a few more AI features, and these features do utilize the PC’s NPU. (Again, just like with Paint.)

The first is yet another Image Creator, but this one comes with a twist: Instead of hitting the cloud and costing Microsoft a few cents every time, it uses the NPU to access local SLMs. The resulting images are of lower quality and (much) smaller resolution (512 x 512 pixels) than what we get via the cloud with Copilot/Designer, and they’re limited to a square aspect ratio for some reason. But where Copilot/Designer creates four images with each prompt, Image Creator in Photos creates many images, and you can keep the creations going by scrolling through the list of thumbnails.

To test this feature, I used a prompt I had used previously with Copilot/Designer: “A small, rotten apple with a bite taken out of it, on the edge of a vast market of fresh fruit and vegetables of all kinds, with a light shining on it from above.” And … yeah. Not even close.

I do like that there’s a Creativity slider, as with Cocreate in Paint, and style choices. I also like that you can create variations of a selected image. But this feature is a non-starter: It doesn’t do what you ask, and the quality is too low-res to be useful.

There’s also a Restyle Image feature alongside Background Blur, Remove, and Replace. It uses AI facial detection capabilities to analyze a photo and restyle it using a text prompt or one of several style options like Fantasy, Anime, Surrealism, Impressionist, and more.

The results are interesting, but not what I expected: Selecting Impressionist turned the background of a photo of my wife into a high-quality painting, but left my wife in her original photographic style. That said, I do like that it shows you the prompt that each choice generates.

And the suddenly common Creativity slider is on hand to exaggerate this effect. I would prefer that it styled the entire photo, including my wife. And as it turns out, there is a drop-down below that Creativity slide that lets you configure which parts of the photo are impacted. It defaults to “Background only,” but there are “Restyle all” and “Foreground only” choices too. Sadly, but perhaps understandably, Microsoft doesn’t allow Restyle Image to restyle–or as it says, “distort”–human faces.

Given this, I tried this feature with a few photos that don’t contain any people. A plate of fried eggs, for example.

And a sunset. Both very nice.

This may literally be the best unique AI feature you get with a Copilot+ PC. For now…

Live Captions with Real-time Language Translation

Live Captions is one of the best features in Windows 11. And because it works with any app that outputs audio, you can use it for online meetings, regardless of service, or with apps like YouTube.

With a Copilot+ PC, Live Captions adds support real-time translations into English from over 40 languages. (I assume it will support two-way translations across all supported languages eventually.) My testing options here are limited: I only speak English fluently, but I know a little bit of Spanish, and so I sought out a Spanish language video I would understand well enough to test how well the live translation feature works.

Pretty well, it seems. A Spanish language learning video was just about the right speed, and I could see that the translation was reasonably good. I’d like to test this more, but we’re limited by my, um, limitations here. And it needs to support more languages.

Windows Studio Effects with Creative Filters

In my recent review of the HP ZBook Firefly 14 G11, I noted that it supported Windows Studio Effects, thanks to its NPU, but not all the effects. With a Copilot+ PC and its more powerful NPU, however, you get the full meal deal.

I’m on camera a lot thanks to the various podcasts I participate in, and while I see the appeal of some of these tools, the sad reality is that I can’t use any of them. But there’s some neat stuff in there. Automatic framing and Portrait light are pretty straightforward. And Eye contact is as creepy as ever, though it offers two sub-choices on the Yoga, Standard and Teleprompter, that I’d not see before.

Background effects works as usual, with Standard blur and Portrait blur options. But I’d never seen Creative filters before, and they’re fun. You get three choices: Illustrated, Water color, and Animated.

And they all work right off the NPU, which is important: Otherwise, they would hammer your CPU or GPU, killing battery life.

Key takeaways

It’s obvious that Microsoft was counting on Recall to make a big splash with Copilot+ PC, as the remaining NPU-powered AI experiences are a mixed bag of mostly U.S. English-only tools scattered across a handful of in-box apps. Some are terrific, like Restyle Image in Photos. But most feel half-hearted, or at least not fully implemented.

As I’ve noted elsewhere, the real value of Windows 11, as always, isn’t what you get with the OS, it’s what you get with the third-party apps you install on Windows. That is, no one uses Windows for Windows, we use Windows for the apps.

Here, too, the selection of NPU-powered experiences is light, and it’s heavily skewed towards video editors, photo editors, and creator-type apps. Of course it is.

But that’s a topic for another day: Hopefully there will be more to choose from by the time I get to it.

Steam's new official controller comes from Hori, arrives this Halloween - TechSpot

Something to look forward to: Hori is known for its high-quality console gamepads and has released PC controllers before, but working directly with Valve on an officially licensed pad is somewhat unexpected. Furthermore, this is the first controller Valve has licensed since discontinuing its Steam controller almost five years ago. However, Hori has only confirmed a Japanese release so far.

Gaming accessory maker Hori has revealed an officially licensed Steam controller set to ship in Japan on October 31. Thus far, only Hori's Japanese website and social channels mention the pad, but it would be odd for the peripheral to remain a Japan-exclusive.

Similar to newer controllers from other manufacturers, including Microsoft's and Sony's high-end models, Hori's offering will include four extra programmable inputs – two small buttons beneath the D-pad and right analog stick, and two backside pedals. According to a machine translation of the company's promo images, it also supports gyro and rapid-fire functions.

Moreover, the sticks feature touch sensors that users can customize for various inputs while the triggers can switch between digital and analog modes to better fit different genres like shooters or racing games.

The home button is a dedicated Steam button that launches Big Picture Mode and opens the Steam menu while in-game. Hori also included the Steam Deck's quick access button, which summons a quick menu in Big Picture Mode while in-game.

Although the controller features Steam input and X-input modes for use outside Valve's launcher, the gyro, stick touch, and menu buttons are exclusive to the Steam mode. Hori will offer an app enabling users to customize numerous controller functions independently of Steam's controller configurator. The gamepad supports wired and Bluetooth connections.

Despite being an officially licensed Steam controller, Hori's product foregoes the trackpads that Valve's original Steam controller and the Steam Deck use to simulate mouse inputs. Furthermore, Hori doesn't mention hall-effect joysticks, which are resistant to the drift effect that has plagued recent official console pads.

While announcing its partnership with Hori, Valve provided a detailed update on controller usage on Steam. Currently, about 15 percent of Steam gameplay sessions use a controller – triple the proportion recorded in 2018. Of these, over half use Xbox controllers, a quarter use PlayStation pads, and around one-tenth use the Steam Deck.

Hori's Steam controller will be available in four colors: black, white, green, and purple on October 31 for 7,980 yen (about $50). Hori's Japanese site also revealed another set of PC controllers coming later this summer that support DirectInput and X-input but not Steam-specific features. They include a 4,980 yen ($30) traditional pad, a six-button fighting game controller for 6,480 yen ($40), a mini fighting stick for 5,980 yen (about $37), and a new Real Arcade Pro Hayabusa fight stick for 15,980 yen ($100).
