If you want to know why Corning made Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the new cover glass the company unveiled today, you can thank (or blame) your big, fat phone.
When Corning set out to make unbreakable glass 15 years ago and began testing on mobile devices, the benchmark was 160g, which more than covered the original iPhone, which weighed 135g. Compare this to the iPhone 14 Pro, which clocks in at a hefty 206g, iPhone 14 Pro Max, which weighs a dense 240 grams, or the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which weighs in at a beefy 228 grams.
Corning VP and General Manager for Gorilla Glass David R. Velasquez told me this week that modern smartphones are now packed with far more technology (better cameras, more sensors, bigger batteries) and are heavier and denser than the phones Corning was originally testing on.
Now the benchmark is 200g. That’s still shy of some of the weight of the latest phones, but weight is not the only part of Corning’s testing methodology that’s changed and, more importantly, this Gorilla Glass is not the same, either.
Victus 2 is a new Gorilla Glass formulation. When we asked for specifics, Velasquez confirmed that it’s different than the original Victus, which was introduced two years ago, but added “It’s better, that’s as much detail as I can give.”
The result is a thinner glass that can stand up equally well to scratches but offers better breakage performance.
Corning, though, has changed its testing methodology. After years of dropping thousands of phones from 1M and 2M heights on simulated asphalt surfaces (sandpaper representing the coarseness of the surface with metal underneath it), Corning has added in simulated concrete. Guess they finally realized that we drop as many phones on the sidewalk as we do on the street.
With “concrete,” Corning is testing Gorilla Glass Victus 2 at 1M and still using “asphalt” for 2M tests. The difference is not so much hardness as it is the jaggedness of the surfaces. To demonstrate, Corning sent me a sheet embedded with two sandpaper squares with coarseness designed to simulate both surfaces. The “concrete” one is noticeably rougher to the touch.
It’s not just larger phones that are making Corning’s job harder. Velasquez reminded me that there was a time when protecting glass screens was comparatively easier.
“Back in the old days, before there were shaped glass parts, most of the design work was around the framing the phones would have. The iPhone 4 was the first time glass was elevated, a huge change and much more likely to break,” he said.
These days phones like Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Google Pixel 7 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro seem to be made almost entirely of glass. I think Corning knows how to make a phone that might never break, but the collaboration between the glass-covering company and the phone manufacturer doesn’t quite work that way.
“OEMs come to us frequently [and say], ‘Here’s what we launch 3, 5 years from now. Can you do this in glass, if so, what are the design considerations?’” explained Velasquez.
What follows are conversations and even some adjustments of molecules and how they’re designed to strengthen the glass.
Velasquez was quick to add that phone manufacturers do not get bespoke glass products. However, understanding the direction phone manufacturers are heading can impact the kinds of glass (maybe even Victus 2) Corning produces now and in the future.
While Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is stronger than Victus 1, Corning has no control over how phone manufacturers use it.
“Most phone companies take this much better glass, and they make it thinner. Phones can never be thin enough, or they make a more aggressive design,” said Velasquez.
Can you fold it?
Speaking of aggressive designs, I had to ask about bendable glass. Corning doesn’t have a bendable product now, but the future will be a different story.
Velasquez confirmed that Corning is in “deep discussion with all big customers on where they’re going. Some are further along than others.”
The company expects to have launched in the next couple of years but could share little else about its plans. Still, Velasquez says Corning is very excited about bendable glass.
“What’s really great about partnering with customers on enabling bendable designs, is it's really, really hard to have glass bending and touching itself. It’s one of the hardest possible problems you can imagine. Corning tends to excel where the problem is really difficult. Our scientist love to sink their teeth into that.”
For now, though, Corning and its partners are rubbing their teeth against almost unbreakable and just-as-hard-to-scratch Gorilla Glass Victus 2. OEMs have the glass samples, and there are already some “design-ins happening.” Valesquez expects “announcements from some of our partners in the next three months”
In the meantime, we await truly unbreakable smartphone glass. Corning is working on it, but Velasquez told me “Not there yet but gonna be continuing fighting that fight.”
If you're looking for some phones that feature the current version of Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus, there's no better place to start than our Best Phones of 2022.

Changes to X Battles
X Battle, a new battle mode, has been added.
X Battle is a battle mode where players of ranks S+0 and up can compete in battle for X Power.
X Power is calculated separately for each battle mode like Splat Zones or Tower Control.
Players battle until reaching three wins or three losses, whereupon X Power is gained or lost based on the results.
The world is divided into two divisions in which X Battles are held to compete for the highest X Power: Takoroka Division, comprising Japan, Hong Kong, S. Korea, Australia, and New Zealand; and Tentatek Division, comprising the Americas and Europe.
The division a player is affiliated with is determined the first time they play in an X Battle each season. Once this is determined, the division cannot be changed during that season.
X Battles will become available to play on November 30th at the same time as Chill Season 2022 begins.
Changes to Ranked
Added a feature allowing players to purposely reset their rank.
This feature can only be used once per season by players of rank B or higher.
What rank a player is reset to is determined automatically by their estimated ability based on their battles up to that point.
Players can use this feature by opening up the Lobby menu, moving their cursors to Anarchy Battle, and pressing the ZL Button.
Some values of the initial cost in Rank Points spent to enter an Anarchy Battle (Series) have increased.

Changes to Salmon Run
Data relating to the Big Run event has been added.
Big Run is a phenomenon where mass numbers of Salmonids swim upstream once every few months.
While a Big Run is happening, Salmon Run will be held specially on regular battle stages.
When the Big Run has ended, different decorations will be awarded to players based on the Big Run results. This will be calculated based on the highest number of Golden Eggs collected in a single work shift across the entire player base.
Added a feature to save and replay job scenarios.
The conditions for using the Reset Rank feature have been changed to being above Go-Getter 40.
When a player with a rank higher than Eggsecutive VP 100 uses the Reset Rank feature, they are not reset all at once to rank value 40. They will be reset in stages of 100 points at a time.
When the stage changes, rank will be reset to Eggsecutive VP 40 as it has been before now.
Some Boss Salmonid abilities have been changed.

Change Details
Big Shot
Movement speed is now about 30% slower than before.
In addition to lowering the Big Shot’s attack frequency, this also lengthens the amount of time it spends walking on land, increasing the players’ window of opportunity to attack.
The animation played as the Big Shot’s shot comes flying in will be shown for longer than before, making it easier to determine where the shot was fired from.
The performance of some special weapons has been changed.
Special Weapon
Change Details
Killer Wail 5.1
Increased the precision with which it tracks Boss Salmonids.
Damage dealt increased by about 25%.
Triple Inkstrike
The guide devices will now trigger when touched by a Salmonid.
Damage dealt increased by about 25%.
Inkjet
Player will no longer be a target for most Salmonid attacks when returning to their position after the use period has ended.
Booyah Bomb
Player will no longer be a target for most Salmonid attacks while charging up the Booyah Bomb.
The number of Boss Salmonids that can appear at once has been capped at 15.
When defeating Boss Salmonids at a regular pace, even at high hazard levels, players will not reach this limit. This change was made because, in cases where players are chased down by bosses they cannot splat, the appearance of too many bosses can slow the game down and make it more difficult than necessary to get things back under control.
Changes to Splatfests
Tricolor Battles have been modified so that all players can play on the attacking or defending team regardless of the halftime results.
Players can join by themselves or in a pair with a friend. When playing by themselves, they will be paired with another solo player, same as before.
A group of eight will be created from four pairs, and a 2 vs. 4 vs. 2 Tricolor Battle will commence.
Players do not know whether they will be on an attacking team or the defending team until the battle begins.
Players have a fifty-fifty chance of being on an attacking team or the defending team, regardless of their Splatfest-team affiliation.
Depending on population ratios for Splatfest teams, there may be Tricolor Battles where all eight players are on the same Splatfest team. In these cases, Clout will not be calculated.
Clout earned in Tricolor Battles will now be calculated in the Final Results, and the points awarded for each category have been adjusted.
Part of the way Clout is calculated for Tricolor Battles has changed.
Increased the victory bonus for the defending team.
When the team in first place at halftime is the defending team and the attacking teams are from the second- or third-place teams, 1.5 times more Clout will be awarded for a victory.
When you win a 10x, 100x, or 333x Battle, it will be shown at your Pledge Box.
After winning a 100x or 333x Battle, you can board your team’s float from your Pledge Box to take commemorative pictures.
Changes to Lockers
T-shirt gear items can now be folded for storage by pressing the L Stick while placing the shirt.
When pressing B to cancel placement, the locker will now return to the immediately previous state before you grabbed anything.
Other Changes
Players can now enter Photo Mode from Recon Mode.
Players can use Photo Mode not only by themselves but also when entering Recon Mode with multiple people by way of Private Battles.
When walking a stage in recon by oneself, a player can call an amiibo to take pictures with.
Added a feature to temporarily use a different player name than usual when playing Private Battles over the internet.
The idea is, for one example, to be able to add a team name into one’s player name, only in Private Battles.
When creating or joining a group for a Private Battle, you can temporarily set a different name by pressing the L Button.
The song title and artist of the background music will now be shown at the beginning of battle.
In the Equip screen, when a player has a lot of weapons or gear, it will now be clear what page of items is being shown.
In the Equip screen, when sorting by gear ability, abilities that do not exist on the items being sorted will no longer appear as sorting options.
Added a feature for listening again to Sheldon’s weapon explanations in Ammo Knights.
Players can use this feature by putting their cursor over the weapon they want to hear the explanation for again and pressing the ZR Button.
Added a badge related to using the Shell-Out Machine.
Previous usage up to this point is counted toward badge progress.
This update focuses on adding data and new features relating to Chill Season 2022, adjustments to battles and Salmon Run, and changes to Tricolor Battles.
For battles, besides an adjustment to reducing attack frequency for the battle style of repeatedly firing Tenta Missiles from afar, we also focused on updates to increase some weapons’ ease of use.
For Salmon Run, in addition to lowering the Big Shot’s attack frequency and giving players more chance to damage it by lowering its movement speed, we implemented changes to improve factors that made some special weapons difficult to use.
For Splatfests, as announced in the previous update, we made significant changes to the Tricolor Battle mode.
In addition to this are various added features and improvements large and small and bug fixes.
Our next update is planned for the middle of Chill Season 2022 and should focus on balance adjustments upon analysis of data from the newly added weapons.
Bug Fixes
Fixes to Player Controls
Fixed an issue where standing on the edge of a sponge of the opponents’ color and jumping would let players do a jump of the same height as the regular ground.
Fixed an issue where a player being moved involuntarily by things like a Splash Wall or a Salmonid’s attack would cause them to not be shown in the proper position on another player’s screen.
Fixed an issue where players going into swim form on thin floors could allow some attacks to damage them from the opposite side of the terrain.
Fixed an issue where swimming on a wall and quickly doing a Squid Surge would allow the player to jump higher than intended when wearing gear with a lot of Intensify Action abilities.
Fixed an issue where doing a Super Jump onto a sponge would cause the player to land in midair.
Fixed an issue with shooters, blasters, dualies, and the Crab Tank’s ZR Button shots where aiming above or below horizontal while firing would cause the shots’ left-right scatter to be less than intended.

Trailer number two is just about here! We might have all been (quietly) expecting to see the Super Mario Bros. Movie debut a new trailer at The Game Awards next week, but leave it to Nintendo to surprise us.
Today, at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm GMT / 8am AET (30th Nov), we'll be getting our second glimpse at next year's animated movie — with the added caveat that (once again) we won't be getting any game news. So no, don't go into this expecting a Chris Pratt-starring Mario game announcement!
If you're a little nosey, though, you may have seen some leaked (potential) posters going around online. That, and yesterday's promo image, suggest that we'll be getting our first glimpse at Princess Peach — who is played by The Queen's Gambit, The Menu, and The Northman actor Anya Taylor-Joy. What else do we expect to see? Well, we'd love more Luigi, but even a small hint at the plot would be really nice!
Join us in 30 minutes to see what Nintendo has in store for us with the next Mario Movie trailer!
December's PlayStation Plus Essential games will be Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Biomutant and Divine Knockout.
That's according to reliable source Dealabs, which routinely leaks the list of games in advance.
These games will reportedly be coming to PlayStation's Essential subscription tier on 6th December, where they will remain until 3rd January.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the recent rerelease of the series' trilogy, and sees players taking on the role of Commander Shepard. On the game's initial announcement, BioWare boss Casey Hudson said the team's goal with this Legendary Edition was "not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernise the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form".
Meanwhile, Biomutant will see players taking on the role of a mammalian warrior who must do what they can to save the Tree of Life. In Eurogamer's review of the game, Malindy described it as "an open world adventure buckling under its own ambitions".
While praising areas such as the vast map, which Malindy said often looks "exquisite", she felt that "every feature falls victim to the game's quantity over quality maxim".
Lastly, we have Divine Knockout. This 3D platform fighter is set in a "stylised world of Gods and Mythology" and comes from Red Beard Games. You can see a little teaser for it in the video above.
These new additions will mean now is your last chance to pick up November's selection of games: Nioh 2, Lego Harry Potter Collection and Heavenly Bodies.
We'll update this story when Sony makes the list official.

December 2022's free PlayStation Plus games lineup has seemingly leaked ahead of time, and members are in for some big-name titles coming up soon, including one brand-new release.
Dealabs user billbil-kun reports that Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Biomutant, and Divine Knockout will be free for PS5 and PS4 subscribers to PlayStation Plus in December. These titles will reportedly be made available for free December 6, 2022-January 3, 2023.
As usual, all PlayStation Plus subscribers, regardless of tier, can grab December's games at no extra cost. While fans wait for catalog to update in December, they can grab November's freebies, which include Nioh 2, Lego Harry Potter Collection, and Heavenly Bodies.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes updated versions of the original three Mass Effect games, while Biomutant is developer Experiment 101's post-apocalyptic action game starring a mammal warrior. Divine Knockout, meanwhile, is a third-person fighting game featuring evolving battlefields and multiple game modes. It launches on December 6 directly into PlayStation Plus, if this rumor proves to be true.
If history is any indication, Sony should officially announce December's free PlayStation Plus games today or tomorrow, so keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

WhatsApp is now rolling out its Message Yourself feature for users on iOS and Android. The feature was initially part of a beta trial that is now being made available to everyone.
Message Yourself is a feature that lets you, in a sense, message yourself. It's a chat that is only visible and accessible to you and you can post there as you would in any other chat. This can be used to write important notes to yourself, saving web links, or uploading documents and voice notes.
This feature has been available on other platforms, notably Telegram, which has had it since launch. WhatsApp only publicly started testing this feature back in October. Some users have managed to work around its absence in the past by creating a group and then removing other members to essentially create a private chat for yourself.
The feature was unavailable for testing at the time of writing but should be available over the coming weeks.
Cyber Monday Nintendo Switch deals are live on games at the Nintendo online store. Many of them are continuations of its Black Friday deals but there are a few new ones on there. The biggest discount is 50% off Assassin's Creed The Ezio Collection reduced from $39.99 to $19.99 (opens in new tab) for a direct download.
We've seen some good Black Friday and Cyber Monday Nintendo Switch OLED deals, and some good deals on the original Switch console in bundles. But what we haven't seen is any deals on the cheaper, lighter Nintendo Switch Lite. This may be because Switch Lite stock has been lower than on the other consoles. It may be because it's already cheaper. Anyway, there is one Cyber Monday Switch Lite deal. It's at Very in the UK. And the saving? £4. Yes, just £4, and that's only on the yellow console too.
The console itself retails for $299, so you're effectively getting a really popular game and online membership thrown in for free. This is a super popular deal, with it being purchased over 1000 times yesterday.

If you're looking for a great Christmas gift for a Switch owner, we've got just the thing. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the Switch's most popular games, and right now it's on sale at Target for $29.99 (opens in new tab) – saving $10 off the retail price.
Did you know SD stands for super deal!? Okay, it doesn't actually, but there certainly are some super deals floating around for Cyber Monday. SanDisk produce their very own Nintendo Licensed SD cards, and as we've said in previous posts we can't get enough of their deals. Below are the best ones that are currently live.
Are you a fan of Nintendo and LEGO? Then check out these amazing sets! There's currently up to 35% off the popular Mario x LEGO collaborations at Amazon which includes the beastly Bowser the Mighty figure. See the best Cyber Monday Switch Lego savings below:
LEGO Super Mario Adventures: Peach starter course: £54.99 £38.65 (opens in new tab)
LEGO Super Mario Adventures: Peach’s Castle Expansion: £114.99 £89.99 (opens in new tab)
LEGO Super Mario The Mighty Bowser:£229.99 £149.99 (opens in new tab)
There's still plenty of savings to be had from the popular PowerA brand on their Switch pads. Represent your favourite franchise with their Nintendo themed controllers whilst saving up to $18: these are the best alternatives to the pricier Nintendo Pro Pads. Check them out below.
PowerA Nintendo Switch controller (black): $59.99 $41.99 (opens in new tab)
PowerA Nintendo Switch controller (Waluigi): $59.99 $47 (opens in new tab)
PowerA Nintendo Switch controller (Mario): $59.99 $49.99 (opens in new tab)
PowerA Nintendo Switch controller (Link): $59.99 $51.99 (opens in new tab)
If you're gaming on the go, a good headset is a great way to fully immerse yourself in whatever you're playing. This smashing Switch Cyber Monday deal has seen Amazon discount the Logitech G435 LIGHTSPEED headset from $79.99 down to $29.99 (opens in new tab). This is a massive saving of 63%! This headset is fully compatible with most modern consoles, so is a great option if you're a gamer that owns multiple systems.
It's dangerous to go alone, take these! There's some great savings active on the Zelda Franchise right now including the most recent release, the Skyward Sword remaster. I may be biased as a long-time Zelda fan, but each of these titles are incredibly fun and would make a great gift for Christmas: especially with a Black Friday/Cyber Monday discount. But be quick: a couple of these deals end today.
Do you like fitness? Do you like gaming? Do you like fighting big burly monsters wearing mesh and spandex? Of course you do. Right now the popular Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure is on sale at Amazon for £69.99 £53.99 (opens in new tab). This fun adventure combines fitness, charming characters and RPG gameplay to make one hell of a workout: I once watched a friend play it on the hardest setting and he cried after 40 minutes of play time.
Let's talk about games for a sec. There are still plenty of decent games deals around for the Switch, but if you want to keep things topical, why not go for the FIFA 23 Switch game so you can recreate all the action from the real-life world cup?
Good morning everyone, and welcome to Black Sunday, we mean Cyber Sunday, erm. What is it now? Cyber Monday is almost here and, though the deals aren't amping up on Switch products right now, we sincerely hope to see that change throughout today and tomorrow. So, stick with us and we'll see what we can find.
We'll be taking a little break from Nintendo Switch Black Friday blogging now, but we'll be back tomorrow and through Cyber Monday. In the meantime, we've got a comprehensive list of all the best Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals above, from consoles to games.
Still the best deal in the US on a console is the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8 and three months' online membership for $299 at Walmart (opens in new tab) (also at Amazon (opens in new tab) and Best Buy (opens in new tab)). There are still more options in the UK, including the deals on the Switch OLED that we mentioned below.
Until tomorrow, happy hunting.
There aren't so many Nintendo Switch OLED Black Friday deals left now. The one deal that we had in the US at Dell has gone, and some of the UK deals are disappearing.
The good news for anyone still up in the UK is that Currys still has a range of Nintendo Switch OLED Black Friday bundles going, including the Switch OLED + 3 games and a memory card for £429 £399 (opens in new tab). And the surprise hit of Black Friday, Asda still has the OLED console reduced from £309 to £279 (opens in new tab), close to the cheapest price we've ever seen.
At Amazon in the US, Black Friday is over and it's now Cyber Monday... despite the fact it's actually Saturday. To confuse things even more, at Amazon UK, where it's now Sunday, it's still Black Friday. And that's despite Amazon's UK Black Friday having started all the way back on 18 November.
Confused? We certainly are, but then maybe that's just because we're searching for deals in multiple time zones and geographies. Hopefully, you're only interested in the deals where you are, and you don't need to worry about these things.
What you probably do want to know though is where Nintendo Switch Cyber Monday deals are the same as Black Friday deals. Or whether Cyber Monday deals are better than Black Friday deals. Well, so far it seems it's only Amazon saying that it's moved on to Cyber Monday, and it's not good new for Switch deals. It did have some good Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals on games, but they've now gone and the only console deal is that Switch + Mario Kart Bundle (opens in new tab) that we mentioned below.
Unless, you're a Prime member that is. In that case you can get a whole bunch of third-party Nintendo Switch accessories for $66.99 $38.22 (opens in new tab). Not exactly a deal worth signing up to Prime for.
The great news in the US is that the Black Friday Nintendo Switch bundle deal is still widely available. Nintendo itself has sold out, but Amazon has stock again, and the deal's still available at Walmart, Best Buy too.
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, 3 months online membership: $299 at Walmart (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, 3 months online membership: $299 at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, 3 months online membership: $299.99 at Best Buy (opens in new tab)
(opens in new tab)
If you're joining us from the UK and on the hunt for Switch games, Amazon has got a load of great Black Friday offers. One of the best selling right now is on FIFA 23, which has a tenner off, now £24.99 (opens in new tab). But if that doesn't tickle your fancy, there's a host of others to choose from:
(opens in new tab)
Evening all. What a day it has been for Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals. And the good news is there's lots of discounts still going strong, including this one at Asda in the UK, which drops the Nintendo Switch OLED by £40 to just £279 (opens in new tab).
The British supermarket came up trumps with this amazing offer last week, but stocks flew off the shelves and it sold out in hours. It's hung around a bit longer this time, but we'd be surprised if it's still around tomorrow at this price.
A £30 saving, this is just £5 more than the lowest ever recorded price for the OLED – you didn't want that coffee tomorrow anyway, right?
We've yet to see any kind of saving on the official Nintendo Pro controller. Luckily, the next best thing has swooped in through the form of PowerA. PowerA design some amazing Nintendo licensed pads, and a selection of them are currently discounted over at Amazon by up to 30% (opens in new tab). These controllers are a fantastic accessory for any Switch fan: I own one myself and vastly prefer it over the Pro pad!
PowerA wireless controller (Black): $59.99 $41.99 (opens in new tab)
PowerA wireless controller (Link):$59.99 $51.99 (opens in new tab)
PowerA wireless controller (Mario): $59.99 $49.99 (opens in new tab)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still hailed as one of the best Switch games over 5 years after its initial release. That's why it generally still retails for $59.99 and whilst Amazon has discounted down by a small $5, Walmart has come through with the Switch Black Friday deals and cut the price to just $29 (opens in new tab) making it half price. This is an excellent saving on the popular game as we rarely see it go this cheap.
Featured in the top 10 of our guide to the best carry cases for Switch, you can now get the PowerA Nintendo Switch Everywhere carry case for $39.99 $35.99 (opens in new tab). It may only be a saving of 10%, but this carry case fits all, including your console, leads, Pro controller, 6 game cards and yes, even the dock itself!
It's been a while since we've mentioned savings on the Micro SD for Switch. They're incredibly handy when it comes to storing all the top games on your console and we've been seeing some amazing price cuts on the officially licensed SanDisk series. Most deals are still active, including this 57% saving on the 128GB MicroSD card taking it from £34.99 down to just £14.99 (opens in new tab) at Amazon.
Games galore! There's lots of discounts on the top titles from Nintendo at the moment across various retailers, so here's the best ones we've found at Amazon right now.
Woah, Asda's £279 Nintendo Switch OLED deal (opens in new tab) is still going strong! This one lasted about five minutes last year, so surely it won't be hanging around much longer.
We shared a dreamy Harry Potter Lego Switch bundle yesterday, and today we've got a similar deal on a LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Nintendo Switch Game & Case Bundle, reduced from £29.99 to £21.99 at Argo (opens in new tab)s (also available at different retailers).
Sometimes with the Switch, you've got to take whatever meagre crumbs the retailers throw at us. And right now, that's a £4 discount off the Switch Lite at Very – now £195 rather than the £199 everywhere else (opens in new tab). So if you were going to buy a Switch Lite anyway, you may as well save the price of a cup of coffee, right?
Argh! That amazing Woot deal has now sold out (we'll keep checking for more stock, don't worry). But there is a refurbished model available at the same price at Gamestop. If you don't mind a pre-owned console, a refurbished model from a reputable seller is a good way to save some money. Get a refurbished Switch OLED from Gamestop for $319.99 now (opens in new tab).
Gooood morning Switch fans. It may still be pitch black outside but we are here by candlelight looking to save you money on Nintendo's super-fun console. In the live blog game, the worst news to wake up to is that one of the best offers has sold out overnight, and we're sorry to report that brilliant Dell OLED US deal has done just that.
But FEAR NOT as we've also found the very first US deal on the standalone console, hurrah! Woot is offering the Switch OLED right now knocked down from $349.99 to $319.99 (opens in new tab)! A $30 saving is a hefty discount with this particular model, as we're not sure we've ever seen it discounted. At least, this is a record-breaking price. YES WOOT!
So to recap, we have Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals in the US, including on the OLED! We'll take a short break and come back in a few hours. But these are the best deals we're seeing at the moment:
US:
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, online membership: $299 at Walmart (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, online membership: $299 at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch OLED + Switch Plate controller and Splatoon3: $439.99 $399.99 at Dell (opens in new tab)
UK:
Whoah, hold up! Can this be true? Am I really seeing a Black Friday Nintendo Switch OLED deal in the US. There I was mocking Dell's $35 gift card deal on the original console, but it's now put up this offer, which I think is the first Switch OLED bundle deal we've seen in the US. It's definitely the first we've seen during Black Friday.
You get the Nintendo Switch OLED + Switch Plate controller + Splatoon3 for $399.99 (opens in new tab). Dell reckons that's a saving of $40, and its sums seem to roughly add up. The OLED sells at $349 and the Switch Plate Controller is normally $39.99. Splatoon3 is $59.99 at full price. The controller comes with 2 swappable magnetic faceplates and works with PCs too.
Actually, there is one other Nintendo Switch Black Friday deal in the US. But again it's not a direct saving. Dell is offering a free $35 gift card (opens in new tab) with the Nintendo Switch, priced at $299. I think for most people the bundle with Mario Kart 8 makes more sense – and when you add in the three months of online membership, that deal's worth close to $100. A $35 Dell gift card could allow you to buy accessories, or maybe a cheap game, so it might appeal to some.
Although there aren't any other Switch Black Friday console deals in the US, there are plenty of Switch game deals. Nintendo's running a big sale on digital games with up to 50% off at its online store (opens in new tab).
And there's still time to get the one Black Friday Nintendo Switch deal that's going in the US. Again, it's that bundle with the Switch + Mario Kart 8 and 3 months of online membership. These retailers all still have availability right now:
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, online membership: $299 at Walmart (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, online membership: $299 at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8, online membership: $299 at Best Buy (opens in new tab)
The same goes for bundles on the original Switch. The big Black Friday Nintendo Switch deal on the original console is a bundle with Mario Kart 8 and 3 months of online membership. That also sold out at Amazon now, but it's still available at Very, AO and Nintendo itself.
Nintendo Switch + Mario Kart 8 + online membership: £259 at Very (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch + Mario Kart 8 + online membership: £259 at Nintendo (opens in new tab)
Nintendo Switch + Mario Kart 8 + online membership: £259 at AO (opens in new tab)
Speaking of UK deals, if you're in the UK and still hoping to bag a Nintendo Switch Black Friday bundle deal, I'd move quickly because a lot of them are selling out. Amazon's Switch OLED bundle deals are long gone, and Very's have followed suit. Now you're only options for a saving on a Switch OLED bundle in the UK are at Currys, which still has these two deals:
There are plenty of Black Friday Nintendo Switch games deals in the UK too, including at the Nintendo store. Here are some of the highlights.
(opens in new tab)
Speaking of Switch games, Best Buy has a great Black Friday sale on some top titles for Switch and Switch Lite consoles, all with $20 off:
(opens in new tab)
Lego Jurassic World is arguably one of the most popular Switch kids' games, and, following the legendary storylines of four Jurassic films, it's not hard to see why. Amazon UK has the sought after Lego Jurassic World game on sale for just £16.89 (opens in new tab), which is a 52% saving on the retail price.
Want more titles? Check out our round up of the best Nintendo Switch games (opens in new tab) available now.
(opens in new tab)
Walmart still has one of the best Nintendo Switch deals running in the US – the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart and three months online membership for $299 (opens in new tab). The Switch console retails for $299 alone, so you're effectively getting a super popular game and online membership thrown in for free.
Switch deals are rare in the US, mainly due to stock levels, so it's great to see them not only available (for now) but with genuine savings attached.
(opens in new tab)
Argos in the UK has a number of deals when it comes to Nintendo Switch consoles (opens in new tab), which offer either extras included with price or reduced bundles. Both the original Switch and OLED consoles are on offer, and deals include a £20 Argos voucher with select purchase and bundles with games including Just Dance 2023 and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
If you want a Switch this Christmas, these offers are great value for money, and save you the hassle of having to search for and buy accessories separately.
(opens in new tab)
If you're just joining us in the UK, you're in for a treat. One of the best Nintendo Switch deals we've ever seen is over at Asda (of all places), where you can get the Nintendo Switch OLED for just £279 (opens in new tab), a saving of £30. Until this week that was the lowest we'd ever seen the console, however it dropped ever-so-slightly more when another retailer shaved another fiver off. But at the time of writing, this is the cheapest you'll find this Switch model in the UK – an unbeatable deal.
While things haven't changed much on the Switch deals front of late, we've spied a delicious Lego deal you may be partial to. The Super Mario Lego sets are super-popular, and Amazon has The Mighty Bowser 3D Model Building Kit with 35% off right now! It really is a thing to behold. Get yours now reduced from £229.99 to £149.99 at Amazon (opens in new tab).
As we know, Switch discounts are thin on the ground in the US. But we've found a refurbished model well worth a look. If from a reputable retailer, a refurbished model is a great way of getting a good price on tech – and Best Buy has a brilliant reputation.
SO, with that in mind, let us offer you this Geek Squad Certified Refurbished Nintendo Switch OLED with White Joy-Con. Getting a pre-loved, totally refurbished model saves you $35 – $314.99 instead of $349.99 at Best Buy (opens in new tab).
This is our favourite memory card for the Switch, and it has had another price cut of a very-nice-indeed £22. The Animal Crossing SanDisk microSDXC-Card has now been reduced from $129.99 to $57.99 at Amazon (opens in new tab). If you like themed stuff (and who doesn't?), a lot of storage and a massive discount then this is for you.
Stop EVERYTHING. We're delighted to announce that the second-lowest price on a Nintendo Switch OLED that's ever been seen is back in business at Asda. The deal, which sees the console reduced from £309 to just £279 at Asda (opens in new tab) is one of the best offers you'll get, only surpassed briefly this week by another retailer. We are pretty sure the OLED won't go much lower this year so we recommend snapping it up immediately.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are undoubtably the games of the moment, and believe it or not, there's already a deal to be found on a bundle of the games (released this month) and the Switch OLED, down from £389 to £329 at Very (opens in new tab)
This time last year, Switch OLED deals were nigh-on impossible to find, but thankfully things are different this time. In the UK, Currys has a few deals on the latest console, including this Nintendo Switch OLED + Zelda bundle, down from £379 to £359. (opens in new tab)
Much like last year, it seems one of 2022's main deals in the UK is a bundle with the infinitely fun Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Right now, you can get a Switch console, Mario Kart and 3 months of Nintendo Switch online for a whopping £78 off, down from £337 to £259 (opens in new tab).
So you've got the Switch, but what about the games? Don't worry – you can find tons of awesome titles withup to 39% off at Amazon (opens in new tab).
We're about to take a break from this blog in a moment, but we'll be back when the sun's come up to continue tracking for the best Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals.
The Nintendo Store also had this deal but has sold out, but Amazon (opens in new tab) and Best Buy (opens in new tab) were also running it and had stock at the time of writing, so if Walmart sells out, you've got another two options to try.
It's not a direct saving on the console, but you're getting a game and 3 months of online membership for free, and that's the best Nintendo Switch deal we've seen in the US.
The same bundle's available in the UK at Amazon for £259.99 (opens in new tab). But in the UK, there's a lot more choice in Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals, as you can see in the links above.
Until tomorrow, happy hunting.
The Nintendo Store's Black Friday sale is now live in the US too. There aren't that many deals though, and none of of those free cases flying around like there are in the UK. In fact, the one Switch bundle deal has sold out (it's still available elsewhere, fortunately).
There are deals on games and accessories though, with up to 40% off (opens in new tab).
Another option to take advantage of the Nintendo Store Black Friday sale in the UK is to build your own bundle. This way you can claim a free case with any combination of console and game. This is valid for all consoles: the original Switch, the Switch Lite and the Switch OLED. There's a range of cases to choose from, and they're normally priced either £14.99 or £24.99.
The Official Nintendo Online Store (opens in new tab) has started its Black Friday deal in the UK too. It has up to 33% off selected digital games and 50% off selected Pokémon merchandise.
And the consoles? It has a bunch of bundle deals, but only on the original Switch. One of these we're seeing at several retailers: Switch + Mario Kart 8 + 3 months online membership for £259.99 (opens in new tab). But it also has options to bundle in a second game and a case with that for £309.99 (opens in new tab). The options for the second game are Mario Party Superstars, Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury or Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
So, the deal below is funny, but the good news is that all of the UK Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals that we've seen over the past few days are still in stock right now. and that includes this much more generous Pokémon Scarlet and Violet bundle from Very. You can get the Nintendo Switch OLED + Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for £389 £329 (opens in new tab), which is pretty great when you consider that the console alone normally retails for £309.99. So thanks, Very; this one's a real deal!
It's gone midnight in the UK, and we all know what that means. It's actually Black Friday. Or at least what used to be called Black Friday since it's become the one day of the year that now lasts an entire month.
So have we seen a sudden explosion of Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals now it's actually Friday? Erm.. no.. No we haven't. Unless you count this stonkingly generous £1 saving over at Very. Yes, you read that right. Very has an incredible £1 off Pokémon Scarlet (opens in new tab), and, in fact, £1 off Pokémon Violet (opens in new tab) too – the latest Pokémon games, which were released just a week ago.
(opens in new tab)
We're back. And there's good and bad news. We'll start with the latter, Switch consoles deals in the US are sparse to say the least. However, the good news there are some great offers on popular games, which make a great Christmas gift.
Suitable for aged seven and up, this is a fab choice not only for Star Wars fans, but for the whole family to enjoy.
Evening all, it's just gone 10pm in the UK and we've been scouring the web for excellent Switch deals all day. And there's been some crackers so far, but lots of stock has now sold out and deals have already ended, so we're back on the hunt to get the best Switch prices on consoles, accessories and games this Black Friday.
Stay tuned. We're going to grab a coffee and will be back shortly with more Switchy goodness.
So what's the saving, we hear you ask? A Nintendo Switch retails for £259 by itself, so you're effectively getting the game and online membership thrown in for free here. It's no surprise to see this is a bestseller over at Amazon right now - grab one before they're all gone.
OK, we'll be frank, the current crop of Nintendo Switch deals are leaving a bit to be desired. The truth is, there's deals on everything around the Switch – such as games and controllers – but the console remains obstinately untouched by discounts.
These are pretty hardcore gamer headphones that can be used with any modern day console and PC, so they're a great choice for gamers that want to get the most out of Nintendo Switch gaming. Get the Razer Blackshark V2 gaming headset from Amazon now for $99.99 $69.99 (opens in new tab), saving you $30.
I've been keeping an eye out for any deals on the Nintendo Pro controller, but no retailer has dropped the price yet... So the second best brand to go for is PowerA. PowerA make some fantastic Nintendo licensed pads that are both stylish and feel good to use: I use one instead of the Pro pad and love it. Amazon has currently discounted a couple of their designs including this Legend of Zelda pad (opens in new tab) and Mario pad (opens in new tab), saving up to $15 on each.
We're travelling across the pond now to look at some US based deals. If you head on over to Dell, you can currently pick up the white Switch OLED bundled with Splatoon 3 and a controller plate for $399 (opens in new tab). Originally retailing at $439.99, this bundle will save you a nifty $40.
The Nintendo Switch doesn't have the largest amount of internal storage. The modest 32GB quickly gets eaten up if you're playing plenty of games, so to give yourself more leeway an internal MicroSD is the way to go. Right now you can get the officially Nintendo licensed SanDisk 256GB MicroSD for £77.99 £39.49 at Amazon (opens in new tab), making it nearly half price!
There's some great discounts on the top Nintendo Switch games right now, especially when it comes to the LEGO series. Below are our top picks of the best savings available right now from Amazon.
The console itself retails for £259 on its own, so you're basically getting a game and online membership thrown in for free. Add in super-fast delivery and it's by far one of the best Switch deals going in the UK right now.
