Google reportedly turned down a Stadia-exclusive Death Stranding successor - Eurogamer.net

Google reportedly turned down a Stadia exclusive follow-up to Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding.

According to a new report from 9to5google, the project received initial approval but as it was intended to be a strictly single-player experience (instead of the asynchronous multiplayer in Death Stranding), the Kojima collaboration was cancelled as Google believed there was no longer a market for solo games.

Despite reaching the early stages of development, the project was reportedly cancelled by Stadia's general manager Phil Harrison in mid 2020 following the first mockups.

Eurogamer Newscast: Was Google Stadia always destined for failure?

The news appears to tally with a VGC report from 2021 that Google was working on various third-party projects, including a Kojima Productions project understood to be an episodic horror game.

That report was denied by a Google Stadia spokesperson at the time, claiming it did not "have anything, nor have announced anything, with Kojima or Yu Suzuki" and that talking to partners about potential projects was "very common".

Though Death Stranding was released exclusively on PlayStation in 2019, a PC version followed in 2020. Versions of the Director's Cut later appeared on both platforms.

Yesterday Google announced it would be shutting down its Stadia streaming service.

A number of exclusive games for the service are now at risk of being lost if not ported to other platforms.

Stadia developer still working on games have expressed shock at the sudden news.

Stadia developers still working on games shocked to hear of shutdown - Eurogamer.net

Developers still hard at work on Google Stadia projects have been expressing their shock and frustration at the cloud gaming service's impending shutdown.

Google's announcement yesterday that it would shutter Stadia completely in January 2023 came as a complete surprise, all have said - even those with upcoming projects set to arrive in November.

What will happen to those games is now unclear, as Google has already moved to close the Stadia store - making new releases unsellable.

Eurogamer Newscast: How damaging are video game leaks?

"OH BOY VERY HAPPY TO SEE MONTHS OF MY WORK GOING IN THE BIN AGAIN," indie developer Simon Roth, creator of Maia, wrote on Twitter last night. "I SURE DO LOVE GAME DEVELOPMENT."

"Every time something bad happens in games," he continued, "the people affected, sometimes having their lives turned upside down, learn from the press or Twitter. No emails, phone calls, no heads up, no note on the website."

"I know everybody is having a great time laughing at this but Stadia had the best dev revenue of any streaming service," Necrosoft Games' Brandon Sheffield wrote. "Launching Hyper Gunsport there was going to recoup our dev costs. We were launching there in November and are now in a much tougher situation."

"Tangle Tower was due to launch on Stadia in two days time, and this article was the first I heard about it shutting down," wrote developer Tom Vian.

"We have a title coming out 1st November," wrote Bard's Tale 3 developer Rebecca Heineman. "Now we hear about this."

"Oh my god," wrote No More Robots' Mike Rose. "We have a game coming to Stadia in November. Who wants to guess that Google will refuse to pay us the money they owe us for it."

We'll update if we hear more from these developers on their future plans - and if there are any other ways for fans to support them.

Earlier today, we reported on Cyberpunk 2077 fans who are trying to get their cloud saves transferred for use elsewhere.

Stadia is shutting down in January - Eurogamer.net

Google is shutting down Stadia, with the beleaguered cloud gaming service set to remain live for players until 18th January 2023.

Stadia's misfortunes are, of course, well-documented; despite initial praise for the service's streaming capabilities at launch in 2019, a slow, problematic roll-out meant Google failed to capitalise on initial consumer interest. The extent of Stadia's failings started to became clear when the company announced it was closing its first-party game development studios less that 14 months after launch, with subsequent reports claiming the streaming platform was missing its targets for monthly active users by hundreds of thousands.

And while Google continued to insist Stadia was "alive and well" as 2021 progressed, reports claimed it had "deprioritised" the consumer-facing side of its game streaming platform, having largely shifted its focus to selling the services' underlying technology to third-parties.

Google unveiled Stadia during a GDC keynote in 2019.

And now, as Stadia's three year anniversary in November approaches, Google has finally pulled the plug. "While Stadia's approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation," Stadia vice president and general manager Phil Harrison wrote in a new blog post announcing the news, "it hasn't gained the traction with users that we expected so we've made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service."

However, while Stadia's consuming-facing operations will cease in January, Harrison says Google will continue offering its game-streaming tech to industry partners. "The underlying technology platform that powers Stadia has been proven at scale and transcends gaming," he explained. "We see clear opportunities to apply this technology across other parts of Google like YouTube, Google Play, and our Augmented Reality (AR) efforts - as well as make it available to our industry partners, which aligns with where we see the future of gaming headed."

In light of today's news, Google says it will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, as well as all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store. It expects to have "the majority" of refunds completed by mid-January 2023, and more details are available via its Help Centre.

"For the Stadia team, building and supporting Stadia from the ground up has been fueled by the same passion for games that our players have," said Harrison. "Many of the Stadia team members will be carrying this work forward in other parts of the company. We’re so grateful for the groundbreaking work of the team and we look forward to continuing to have an impact across gaming and other industries using the foundational Stadia streaming technology."

Google Pixel 7 price leak suggests Google is totally out of touch - TechRadar

Audio player loading…

We're starting to hear more and more Google Pixel 7 leaks, with the launch of the phone just a week away, but tech fans might be getting a lot of déjà vu, with the leaks all listing near-identical specs to what we heard about the Pixel 6 a year ago.

It sounds like the new phones – a successor to the Pixel 6 Pro is also expected – could be very similar to their 2021 predecessors. And a new price leak has suggested that the phones' costs could be the same too, as a Twitter user spotted the Pixel 7 briefly listed on Amazon (before being promptly taken down, of course).

According to these listings, the Pixel 7 will cost $599 while the Pixel 7 Pro will cost $899, both of which are identical to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro starting prices. The leak doesn't include any other region prices, but in the UK the current models cost £599 and £849, while in Australia they went for AU$999 and AU$1,299.

So it sounds like Google is planning on retaining the same prices for its new phones as it sold the old ones for, a move which doesn't make much sense.

Analysis: same price, new world

Google's choice to keep the same price points is a little curious when you consider that the specs leaks suggest these phones are virtually unchanged from their predecessors. You're buying year-old tech for the same price as before.

Do bear in mind that the price of tech generally lowers over time, so you can readily pick up a cheaper Pixel 6 or 6 Pro right now, and after the launch of the new ones, the older models will very likely get even cheaper.

But there's another key factor to consider in the price: $599 might be the same number in 2022 as it was in 2021, but with the changing global climate, like wars and flailing currencies and cost of living crises, it's a very different amount of money.

Some people just won't be willing to shell out the amount this year, that they may have been able to last year. But this speaks to a wider issue in consumer tech.

Google isn't the only tech company to completely neglect the challenging global climate when pricing its gadgets: Samsung is still releasing super-pricey folding phones, and the iPhone 14 is, for some incomprehensible reason, even pricier than the iPhone 13 in some regions.

Too few brands are actually catering to the tough economic times many are facing right now, with companies increasing the price of their premium offerings to counter rising costs, instead of just designing more affordable alternatives to flagships.

These high and rising prices suggest that companies are totally out of touch with their buyers, and don't understand the economic hardship troubling many.

We'll have to reach a breaking point sooner or later, either with brands finally clueing into the fact that they need to release cheaper phones, or with customers voting with their wallets by sticking to second-hand or refurbished devices. But until then, you can buy the best cheap phones to show that cost is important to you.

Amazon's $139 Halo Rise uses sensors and AI to track your sleeping patterns - Daily Mail

Amazon wants to watch you sleep: New $139 bedside gadget uses sensors and artificial intelligence to measure movements and breathing patterns to see if you got a good night's rest

  • Amazon unveiled its Halo Rise sleep tracker Wednesday that will cost $139
  • The circular device sits at the bedside and monitors movements and breathing
  • This allows it it to create feedback on how the user sleeps each night

Amazon will soon watch you sleep with its new bedside device called Halo Rise that uses non-contact sensors and artificial intelligence to measure your movements and breathing patterns.

The $139 sleep device works by tracking room temperature, humidity and light, plus the breathing patterns of the person closest to it, with the goal of providing insight to why or why not the user had a good night's rest.

Halo Rise is part of Amazon's Halo line, which includes a fitness tracker that can track physical activity and sleeping patterns.

Just as it said with the launch of its wearable, Amazon is again ensuring users that the information in the Halo Rise device will be kept safe — saying the 'health data is encrypted in transit and at rest in the cloud.'

Amazon unveiled its Halo Rise Wednesday. This device measures movements and breathing patterns while you sleep

However, the company is known for collecting and keeping large swaths of user data - specifically about people's homes that use its Roomba robotic vacuum.

'We treat your palm signature just like other highly sensitive personal data and keep it safe using best-in-class technical and physical security controls,' the company said on a website that provides information about the technology.

However, critics are still weary about the data Halo Rise and all of Amazon's products collect on consumers.

'It's hard to think of another organization that has as many touch points as Amazon does to an individual,' said Ian Greenblatt, who heads up tech research at the consumer research and data analytics firm J.D. Power.

'It's almost overwhelming, and it's hard to put a finger on it.'

It uses non-contact sensors and artificial intelligence to give insight to how well or awful you slept that night

Like peers Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google, Amazon has invested in health-tracking technology for consumers, at times drawing regulatory scrutiny for sensitive information it aimed to collect, like body fat percentage via its fitness wristband called Halo.

Halo Rise is said to be similar to Amazon's wearable, except users do not have to wear it while sleeping.

The device also doubles as an alarm clock with a wakeup light, which activates at a certain time based on your sleeping habits.

The circular sleeping gadget can pair with an Amazon Echo, allowing users to ask the smart assistant how they slept instead of relying on the companion app.

'You also have the ability to use Halo Rise as part of a personalized Alexa Routine. For instance, when you get into bed, Alexa can automatically dim the lights in the bedroom, turn off the TV, and start a relaxing meditation,' Amazon shared in a blog post announcing the device.

'Additionally, you can ask Alexa to pull up your sleep data on Echo Show, with the last night's sleep report viewable on the device's display.'

The device also doubles as an alarm clock with a wakeup light, which activates at a certain time based on your sleeping habits

Halo Rise is equipped with a sleep algorithm that was 'trained and validated against overnight polysomnography—the clinical gold standard for sleep analysis,' Amazon shared.

After you wake, you will receive a detailed sleep summary, including a graph showing time spent in each sleep phase—REM, light, and deep sleep—along with a sleep score and information about your sleep environment. All of which will be displayed in a companion app.

Melissa Cha, vice president of Amazon Smart Home and Health, said in a statement: 'Quality sleep is an incredibly important factor in our overall health and well-being. In today's busy world, getting more and better sleep is one of the areas that customers ask us about the most, which is why we're tackling sleep head on.

'Halo Rise is designed to work intelligently in the background and give you an entirely new and effortless way to manage your sleep and achieve sleep-life harmony.'

[Exclusive] Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro renders reveal complete design ahead of launch - 91mobiles

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were confirmed by Google at the I/O 2022 event back in May and they come as successors to the Pixel 6 series from last year. The phones are expected to bring some notable improvements with regard to cameras and performance. Notably, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will be the first flagships from Google to launch in India since the Pixel 3.

Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro renders

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are not very different from the Pixel 6 series, at least from the front. The phones come with a centre-positioned hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera and symmetrically slim bezels on all sides. The Pro model has slightly curved edges. The volume and power buttons are present on the right side.

Moving to the back, the phones have the familiar horizontal camera visor that houses dual cameras on the Pixel 7 and triple cameras on the Pixel 7 Pro, with an LED flash. The camera module protrudes above the flat back panel. The Pixel 7 can be seen in White, Black and Mint Green colour options, while the Pixel 7 Pro will be available in Black, White, and a new Hazel colour.

Google Pixel 7 series specifications

Google Pixel 7 Pro is said to sport a 6.7-inch QHD+ LTPO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the regular Pixel 7 will have a slightly smaller display with just a 90Hz refresh rate. They will be powered by the 2nd generation Tensor chipset paired with 12GB RAM, 128GB, or 256GB of storage. The phones are likely to run on Android 13 OS out of the box and will have a Titan security chip.

The Pixel 7 Pro packs a 5000mAh battery and is claimed to have 30W fast charging support, much like the Pixel 6 again. However, the battery specifications of the Pixel 7 haven’t been revealed yet.

Moving to cameras, the Pixel 7 Pro is said to pack a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 48MP telephoto lens. It is said to have an 11MP camera on the front, in line with the Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 7 will have dual cameras on the back and may miss out on the 48MP telephoto lens.

You Can Now Add Splatoon 3 Widgets To Android And iOS Home Screens - Nintendo Life

Splatoon 3 - SplatNet 3
Image: Nintendo Life

Nintendo has added a cool new feature to the Switch Online mobile application - allowing users to add Splatoon 3 widgets to their phone's main menus.

To access these new features, you'll need to have the app downloaded on your device of choice and be logged in with your Nintendo Network ID. Be sure to also update the app to Version 2.3.0, if you haven't used it in a while.

We tested it out on Android and were able to add in the widgets from the phone's home screen. Players will be able to pin battle logs, the current stage schedule (includes options for Anarchy and Salmon Run), equipped gear, and also a photo album.

This is definitely a neat little feature that will help Splatoon 3 players stay in the loop with the rotation and allows them to also keep tabs on their in-game stats. The full Splatoon 3 hub 'SplatNet 3' also allows you to make store purchases and then redeem them in-game.

Will you be adding any of these widgets to your phone's home menu screen? Tell us down below.

Marantz's new Cinema Series AVRs bring the cinema home in serious style - What Hi-Fi?

Does your home cinema set-up need some love ahead of winter? Then check out Marantz's Cinema Series, which offers an amp and multiple AV receivers to transform your lounge into a proper home cinema. Roll on those long winter evenings...

All AVRs in the range boast Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and 8K video through multiple inputs. They also offer room optimisation through multiple inputs, while the HEOS built-in means multi-room skills a-go-go. And you'll find a full complement of wireless technologies, including wi-fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay 2

The high definition graphical user interface is all-new, too – and voice compatibility makes controlling them a doddle.

So what's on offer?

The AV 10 and AMP 10 are the flagship products in the Cinema Series. They're built on Marantz's HDAM (Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Modules) technology, which make the units quieter, more efficient and more musical.

The AV 10 has 15.4-channel processing, with four independent subwoofers giving you advanced bass management. It supports up to 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos layout, IMAX Enhanced and Auto 3D, as well as the technologies mentioned earlier. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and Dirac Live are also available via an upgrade.

Voice control comes courtesy of Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, while it offers all the usual streaming apps (Spotify Connect, Deezer, Tidal, Amazon Music and so on).

Seven HDMIs take care of all your input needs, and there are three for output too.

The AMP 10 is a 16-channel power amplifier with class D amplification. It offers 200W + 200W at 8 ohms, two-channel driven; or 400W + 400W at 8 ohms, two-channel driven at BTL (Bridge-Tied Load). It also boasts XLR and RCA inputs as well as a toroidal power transformer.

Don't fancy a flagship? There's plenty else in the range.

Marantz Cinema Series brings the cinema home

The Cinema 40 is an 11.4-channel, 125-watt AVR with an aluminium front panel that's described as "pure luxury to the touch". The Cinema 50 again has 11.4 channels, but each only has 110 watts, while the Cinema 60 drops this down to 7.2 channels each with 100 watts – there's also a model with an integrated DAB radio, called Cinema 60DAB.

Finally, the Cinema 70s is a 7.2-channel, 50-watt AVR built for smaller living spaces.

Pricing? But of course.

AV 10: £5999 / $7000 (about AU$10000)
AMP 10: £5999 / $7000 (about AU$10000)
Cinema 40: £2399 / $3500 (about AU$4000)
Cinema 50: £1699 / $2500 (about AU$2800)
Cinema 60: £1249 / $1700 (about AU$2000)
Cinema 70s: £849 / $1200 (about AU$1400)

The Cinema 50 and 60 will be the first to be available, at the end of October, with the rest of the range to follow.

PC component scavenging queue jumper pulled into line with a screensaver - The Register

Who, Me? Welcome to the working week and therefore to a new instalment of “Who, Me?”, The Register's confessional in which readers reveal and defend their darkest deeds.

This week meet a chap we'll Regomize as "Peter", who wrote with a tale of working at a small tech support outfit on the outskirts of London.

Peter told us that this company had Shoemaker's Children Syndrome: staff were so busy delivering lovely machines to clients they got by with unreliable junk for their own work.

"In the days when the Pentium 4 at 1.5GHz reigned supreme, you would be lucky to find a 500MHz Celeron in our office," Peter lamented. And even those modest machines featured parts from PCs that clients had returned.

That sad state of affairs meant that when cast-off machines came into the office, staff would scavenge them for parts they hoped would make their PCs more palatable.

While this arrangement was undoubtedly a little tawdry, Peter and his colleagues dignified it with rules that required the longest-serving staff to be offered right of first refusal.

The system worked – until a batch of scavenger-class machines came into the office on a Friday afternoon when the old hands were more interested in easing into the weekend with a beer than upgrading their PCs.

One young whippersnapper took advantage of the situation by coming in over the weekend and helping himself to the prime cuts from the Friday haul.

This was not just a violation of office etiquette, but also a serious inconvenience, because the incoming machines had already been earmarked for other roles.

So when the youngster commenced the new working week by pointing out he was packing an awesome Athlon 1333, GPU, and even a SATA disk, it did not go down well.

Worse still, Peter recalls the youngster "left the workshop in a filthy mess and was now being smug about it" by boasting about the specs of his upgraded machines.

Revenge – or at least a sharp lesson in proper behavior – was clearly called for.

Peter administered it with a screensaver while the youngster took a break from work.

"This was in the days when Windows 2000 was our OS of choice because XP looked a bit too colorful," Peter explained. So he installed a screensaver that displayed the Windows 2000 Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), followed by a fake reboot, then another crash into the BSOD.

The youngster returned from his break just as his PC "crashed" to the BSOD.

"His instinct was to aggressively pull the power cable out of the back of the workstation and begin taking it apart," Peter recalled.

The PC duly rebooted … but then the screensaver kicked in and the machine "crashed" again.

At which point the youngster would start replacing parts to figure out which component of the patchwork PC was causing the OS to fall over so often.

Peter says the youngster eventually restored the PC to its original configuration, leaving the lovely new parts to be returned and redeployed as previously intended.

Review: Fara Cycling F/AR | road.cc - road.cc

The Fara Cycling F/AR is an absolute cracker – it feels like a race bike on the road, but can transfer that performance to hardpacked tracks and trails through its ability to swallow 38mm tyres. The ride quality is awesome, as is the handling, and for a bike shod with rubber that big, and a fully electronic groupset, it is impressively light too.

The AR part of F/AR stands for All-Road, and it's one very capable machine. It doesn't quite make the full jump to gravel (Fara has a range of bikes for that), but it does give you the flexibility to explore some of those byways you've seen out the corner of your eye as you are riding along. And on the asphalt sections in between, it feels pure roadie.

> Buy now: Fara Cycling F/AR for £4,644 from Fara Cycling

With the inclusion of hydraulic disc brakes and/or fully wireless electronic groupsets, it's no secret that road bikes have got heavier over the years. Throw in the wide tyres fitted here compared with a more typical 25mm, and I was expecting the F/AR to tip the scales north of 9kg, rather than the rather svelte 8.11kg it registered on our scales.

This is one of the biggest defining things about how the Fara rides: it's light enough to be fun on the road, behaving just like a responsive race bike that thrives on being ridden hard.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - riding 2.jpg

Acceleration is brisk, not only because of the lack of weight, but also thanks to the stiffness from the full carbon fibre frame, with the large bottom bracket shell and compact rear triangle keeping things tight. It doesn't feel like the Fara is wasting any of the power you are putting through the pedals.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - rear.jpg

This helps on the climbs, and it's a quick bike on the flat too. The gear ratios of the SRAM groupset adds to the efficiency and the relatively deep wheels bring a little aero advantage.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - riding 5.jpg

The geometry is similar to that found on an endurance road bike, with a front end that is balanced between quick handling for fun in the bends and on descents, and enough stability and poise that it inspires confidence on rough roads or riding on loose surfaces.

I spent the majority of the test period riding the F/AR on the road, both main and country lanes, and it was an absolute joy. I like to have my tyres pumped up hard and even with the 35mm Panaracer GravelKings feeling firm rolling along the tarmac, the Fara gives a great ride feel.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - riding 3.jpg

Alongside the tautness of the frame there is just a bit of forgiveness coming from the carbon lay-up, enough to take the edge off the road surface without reducing feedback to your contact points or taking away the involvement between rider and bike.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - seat tube junction.jpg

The fork matches the quality of the frame too. It's tight enough to cope with heavy cornering and braking loads, with enough flex in the legs to remove the chatter from ground.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - riding 4.jpg

Away from the road, riding hardpacked byways or gentle gravel tracks, the F/AR behaves well. The handling still doesn't become a handful even on a surface with a bit of movement, and with the give in the frame combined with dropping a bit of pressure out of the tyres, the ride remains comfortable.

Adding some weight to the front end, either a bar bag or one fitted to the fork, doesn't really affect the handling that much. The F/AR still feels confident and easy to control.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - fork detail.jpg

Chucking a large saddlepack on the rear doesn't affect the way the Fara rides, either, which means you can carry a decent amount of kit for a trip away.

The F/AR is a very capable machine, a great road bike focusing on speed and performance but with the versatility and comfort to take on the route less travelled.

Frame & fork

The F/AR's frame is full carbon fibre, although Fara doesn't divulge what grade or from which supplier, like some brands do. It looks and feels great, and I'm a big fan of this red paint job.

Weight-wise, you are looking at sub-1kg depending on size, and you get a five-year warranty too. Neat touches like the metal plate on the chainstay behind the crankset helps protect it from accidental damage, increasing longevity.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - chain stay detail.jpg

The fork comes in at around 410g, depending on the length of the steerer tube.

Designed for big miles, it is no surprise to find the frame adorned with mounting points. You get two bottle cage positions on the down tube and seat tube as usual, plus another set under the down tube for carrying a bottle or tool pack.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - down tube.jpg

On the top tube you'll find mounts for a bento box, plus you get three mounting points on each fork leg, and the F/AR will take full mudguards too.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - top tube bosses.jpg

Fara also sells a range of bikepacking bags designed to suit the F/AR's geometry for a perfect fit. The fact that the F/AR has full internal routing through the frame and fork for any cables, wires or hoses means any bags or other mounted stuff won't impede shifting or braking. It makes it easier to attach everything, too.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - head tube.jpg

In terms of tyre clearance the F/AR range sits between road and gravel, with a decent amount of room to accommodate up to 38mm slicks.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - clearance.jpg

If you want something with tread on for gravel tracks or byways, there are plenty of 35mm gravel or cyclocross tyres on the market which should fit easily enough.

> Buyer’s Guide: 10 of the best gravel bike tyres

Fara has gone for a BB386 press-fit bottom bracket, 12mm thru-axles and flat mounts for the brake callipers. Their position is set up for 160/140mm rotors.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - rear drop out.jpg

The seat tube accepts a round seatpost of 27.2mm in diameter which is standard off the shelf stuff, meaning that upgrades are possible. That allows a switch to a suspension seatpost, for instance, if you wanted one for long treks. The post clamp is external, too, none of this hidden widget stuff.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - saddle and seat post.jpg

Geometry

The F/AR is available in four sizes, ranging from 49 to 59cm, with top tube lengths of 521mm through to 581mm.

As I mentioned earlier the geometry is similar to that found on most endurance style road bikes, which means our 56 has a stack and reach of 583mm and 386mm respectively. The head angle is 72 degrees, while the seat angle is a steeper 74 degrees.

The head tube length is 166mm and the top tube 564mm, with an overall wheelbase length of 1,013mm.

Groupset

The F/AR is available as a frameset only option for £2,519 direct from Fara in Norway. Norway has a free trade agreement with the UK so that's inclusive of VAT, so no hidden charges when it arrives at our shores.

Other than that, the F/AR comes in a couple of 'ready to go' builds using SRAM's eTap AXS groupsets. A Rival AXS build costs £3,329, and the Force AXS is £4,589, or you can spec up a build for yourself from a range of Shimano groupsets as well as SRAM.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - front mech.jpg

You can select wheelsets and various finishing kit, too. The prices on this part of the website at the moment are in euros so you'll just need to work out the exchange rate when you order. Fara is working on getting all of these prices into sterling.

Builds start at around £3,200 with Shimano Ultegra mechanical and an alloy wheelset.

Our build is based around the Force AXS eTap groupset (we tested the Wide version here), with a 46/33-tooth chainset and a 10-36 12-speed cassette.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - rear mech.jpg

I like the eTap groupsets, especially the efficiency achieved by the use of the smaller chainrings and wide-ranging cassette.

With the largest chainring being just 46T, for the majority of riding I barely needed to use the smaller one. Going down to 10T for the smallest sprocket on the cassette means you still have plenty of top-end gear to push for the downhills, and the middle part of the cassette is still reasonably close in ratio sizes, so cadence isn't affected.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - drivetrain.jpg

Things get a bit 'gappier' at the higher end of the cassette, but as these gears are mostly used for climbing it isn't a big deal.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - cassette.jpg

The gear shifts are crisp and quick, and with just one button on each shifter the chances of a mis-shift are remote.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - drop bar and lever.jpg

Should you ever need to touch anything, setting up the gearshifts and mechs is simple thanks to it being a fully wireless system. SRAM's app is good at getting everything talking to each other and you can set up the shifter button to work how you want it to.

The brakes also deliver top-notch performance, with the combination of SRAM's hydraulic callipers and 160mm Paceline rotors offering all the power you'll need and plenty of modulation, with plenty of bite at the lever.

Finishing kit

As for the rest of the kit, ours has a Ritchey WCS handlebar, a 3T Apto Stealth stem, Fara full carbon fibre seatpost and Fizik Tempo Argo saddle.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - stem.jpg
2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - saddle.jpg

It's all the kind of kit you'd expect on a bike of this price and quality, although, as I said, you can spec it exactly how you want it.

Wheels and tyres

This bike is fitted with a set of Fulcrum's Airbeat 400 wheels, an OEM wheelset only available to manufacturers, and there is a lot to like here: 40mm-deep carbon fibre rims that measure 28mm externally, 21mm internally.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - tyre and rim.jpg

Fulcrum claims a weight of 1,640g which is decent for wheels of this depth.

With 24 spokes front and rear paired to aluminium alloy hubs, the build is strong, and I found them to be durable on and off the road.

The majority of the test period was dry, so they didn't see a huge amount of wet weather, but the bearings are still running smoothly and quietly.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - front.jpg

There is a weight limit of 120kg which includes you and your bike, which is worth thinking about if you are planning on loading the F/AR up with kit.

Wrapped around the Fulcrum wheels are a pair of Panaracer GravelKing Slicks in a 35mm width. They are tubeless compatible.

2022 Fara Cycling F-AR - fork shoulder.jpg

They scored highly in Hollis's review, as they offer good rolling resistance, plenty of grip and also give a good ride feel.

Their width means they are able to cope with light gravel work too, and for such a lightweight tyre they are pretty robust.

Value

The build we have works out at €5353, which at the time of writing equates to around £4,644.

A similar bike to the F/AR is the Merida Scultura Endurance. I tested the Endurance 7000-e a couple of years back and was really impressed.

The geometry is similar, and it can take full mudguards and has decent tyre clearance at 35mm. It's available in a SRAM Rival eTap build for £3,400 with alloy Fulcrum wheels, which is comparable to the build in Fara's line-up at £3,329.

Canyon updated its Endurace framesets to be able to accept 35mm tyres at the beginning of the year, to bring a bit more versatility. It actually sells an All-Road version of the Endurace CF 7, which comes with a Rival eTap groupset and DT Swiss wheels, for £2,999. It lacks the mounts of the Fara, though, and the tyre clearance is a little tighter. Virtually all sizes are out of stock too.

> Best endurance road bikes 2022 – perfect for sportives, audax and mile-munching

Cannondale's latest Synapse Carbon range allows for bigger tyres than its predecessor, also up to 35mm for a bit of all-road capability. Most models come with 30mm tyres fitted as standard, but they also get the new SmartSense electronics including lights, app connectivity, and the option of Garmin's rear-facing radar.

When I rode the Synapse 2 RL model I thought its ride quality was brilliant. The SmartSense stuff isn't necessary, though, just adding weight and cost. The 3 L model costs £3,200 and comes with mechanical Shimano 105.

Conclusion

The F/AR gives a stunning ride, both in terms of comfort and the way it behaves thanks to the lay-up of the carbon fibre and the geometry. I enjoyed getting on it every single time I rode it, and having the versatility to explore a byway instead of just riding past is a big bonus to the fun factor.

The F/AR isn't the only all-road bike out there, but it does have more tyre clearance than most, and even with wide boots on it still delivers performance on the road that others struggle to match.

Verdict

High-speed road bike that can tackle some rough stuff, with an awesome ride quality wherever you take it

Tell us what the bike is for and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about the bike?

Fara says, "Take your adventures to a new level with the F/All-Road Force AXS. Featuring the unparalleled versatility of SRAM's wireless AXS technology giving you a plethora of gearing options to tackle any terrain. This bike will quite simply go anywhere you want it to, and you will have a blast getting there! Generous tyre clearance means you can run anything from fast road slicks up to gravel-ready all-rounders to allow for off-road exploration whilst maintaining a quick and responsive ride."

The F/AR has all the performance of a high-quality road bike with big enough tyre clearances to allow you to tackle hardpacked trails and gravel tracks.

Where does this model sit in the range? Tell us briefly about the cheaper options and the more expensive options

In Fara's online shop it sells two 'ride ready' models, with this SRAM Force eTap model sitting above the Rival eTap offering. Fara also offers you the chance to configure your own build with a range of wheels, groupsets and so on.

Overall rating for frame and fork

9/10

Tell us about the build quality and finish of the frame and fork?

This is a high-end frameset both in terms of build and the ride quality.

Tell us about the materials used in the frame and fork?

From Fara:

Frame: Fara Cycling F/All-Road Carbon Fiber Frame, 960g, Flat Mount 160/140mm disc brake mounts, Full internal cable routing, max 700x38c slick tire clearance.

Fork: Fara Cycling F/All-Road Carbon Fiber Disc Brake Fork, 410g

Mounts: 2x Bottle cage, 3x Fork Mounts, Fender Mounts F&R, Top-Tube "Bento" Mounts

Tell us about the geometry of the frame and fork?

The geometry is pretty much the same as most endurance road bikes, which alongside the wide tyres allows it to work on the road and away from it.

How was the bike in terms of height and reach? How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size?

The stack and reach measurements are also similar to an endurance bike, with a head tube tall enough to give a position that enables you to sit a little more upright while still allowing you to get aero if you want to.

Was the bike comfortable to ride? Tell us how you felt about the ride quality.

Yes, very comfortable. Not just because of the large volume tyres either, as the frame and fork are forgiving in the places they need to be.

Did the bike feel stiff in the right places? Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible?

Stiffness levels are great where they need to be. There is no flex around the lower half of the frame and bottom bracket shell.

How did the bike transfer power? Did it feel efficient?

Power transfer is impressive through the frame, and its relatively low weight helps it feel responsive when accelerating or climbing.

Was there any toe-clip overlap with the front wheel? If so was it a problem?

No.

How would you describe the steering? Was it lively neutral or unresponsive? On the quick side of neutral.

Tell us some more about the handling. How did the bike feel overall? Did it do particular things well or badly?

There is nothing twitchy about the steering on the F/AR. It's quick enough to have some fun in the bends, even on high-speed descents, but still gives plenty of confidence and easy control. It works on all hardpacked surfaces too.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's comfort? would you recommend any changes?

The Fizik Tempo Argo saddle is a comfortable shape and one I enjoyed using.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's stiffness? would you recommend any changes?

The Fulcrum wheels and the carbon cranks of the Force chainset offer loads of stiffness when pushing the Fara hard.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's efficiency? would you recommend any changes?

I find the ratios used on SRAM's eTap groupsets very efficient, providing a large spread of gears at both ends of the spectrum.

Did you enjoy riding the bike? Yes

Would you consider buying the bike? Yes

Would you recommend the bike to a friend? Yes

How does the price compare to that of similar bikes in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?

The Fara compares well on price against similar bikes. It's around the same sort of cost as a similarly specced Merida Scultura, and only a bit more expensive than Canyon's new Endurace offering.

The Cannondale Synapse will take 35mm tyres, and while it rides well, the SmartSense kit adds weight and makes it expensive with no real benefits.

The Fara F/AR has a stunning ride quality and the performance of a high-end road bike, without sacrificing its ability on broken tarmac or hardpacked gravel. Millions of Android users warned to delete these popular apps immediately - don't delay - Express

Security experts are warning Android users about a swathe of dangerous apps that have been downloaded millions of times from the Google Play Store. Since 2020, over 190 Android apps with a strain of malware that's been dubbed 'Harly' have been installed with this shock bug able even able to steal money via expensive subscription plans.

The malware was discovered by anti-virus provider Kaspersky, and it's been called Harly due to its similarities to another infamous Android malware - Joker.

Anyone that reads Batman comics will be familiar with these names and, like DC characters, these bugs share a lot in common.

The Harly malware is capable of signing Android users up to expensive subscription services without them realising it.

This is done by secretly obtaining text message security codes.

Once stolen, these can then be used to sign Android users up for subscriptions without their knowledge.

Harly can also verify a subscription via a phone call, and make sure a victim doesn't realise this has happened.

If this goes undetected it can lead to Android users losing hundreds of pounds each year.

Speaking about how these dangerous apps managed to sneak onto the Google Play Store, Kaspersky said: "Since 2020 more than 190 apps infected with Harly have been found on Google Play. A conservative estimate of the number of downloads of these apps is 4.8 million, but the actual figure may be even higher.

"Just like the Jocker Trojans, Trojans in the Harly family imitate legitimate apps. So how does it work? The scammers download ordinary apps from Google Play, insert malicious code into them, then upload them to Google Play under a different name. The apps may still have the features that are listed in the description, so the users may not even suspect a threat."

Kaspersky highlighted a number of Play Store apps that Android users need to lookout for, some of which have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times.

While the below apps have all been removed from the Play Store by now make sure you delete them from your device if you've already installed them beforehand...

Pony Camera - Over 500,000 downloads

Live Wallpaper&Themes Launcher - Over 100,000 downloads

Action Launcher & Wallpapers - Over 100,000 downloads

Color Call - Over 100,000 downloads

Good Launcher - Over 100,000 downloads

Mondy Widgets - Over 100,000 downloads

Funcalls-Voice Changer - Over 100,000 downloads

Eva Launcher - Over 100,000 downloads

Newlook Launcher - Over 100,000 downloads

Pixel Screen Wallpaper - Over 100,000 downloads

In terms of how to stay safe from any dangerous apps that manage to sneak onto the Google Play Store, always pay close attention to the reviews for the app - you may find write-ups from other Android users who already have fallen victim to a scam and are alerting others to it.

Also, it's best practice to look into the developer of an app you're thinking of downloading and only trusting reputable, well-known names.

Having a good anti-virus app installed on your Android device can also help you stay clear of threats and malware. When downloading an anti-virus make sure you choose an official app from a trusted provider.

Sometimes devious scammers have even released fake free anti-virus apps which won't keep your device safe and will harm it instead.

British boy, 17, is charged with hacking Uber and Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar - Daily Mail

British boy, 17, is charged with hacking Uber and Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar to leak footage from upcoming game, after joint investigation between FBI and English cops

  • A 17-year-old boy in the United Kingdom appeared in court in London to answer for charges related to computer misuse
  • The teenager, from Oxfordshire, has been linked to the recent hacking of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar and of Uber
  • On September 18, the hacker released 90 videos of gameplay for Grand Theft Auto, which has been in development since 2014
  • The teenager is reportedly a member of the group Laspu$$
  • The group's MO is to steal source code from tech companies and then hold it to ransom while threatening to release it, making the companies vulnerable

A 17-year-old boy from Oxfordshire in England has been arrested in relation to recent high-profile hackings of Uber and Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar.

According to reporting from Matthew Keys' The Desk, the unnamed teen is being held on charges that include conspiracy to attack at least two computing systems.

A brief statement from the City of London Police Department confirmed the arrested of a 17-year-old in Oxfordshire on suspicion of hacking on the night of September 22.

The teenager was apprehended at his mother's house, where he lives.

He was arrested by the UK's National Cyber Crime Unit in cooperation with counterparts from the FBI in the United States

Due to his age, he has not been named, although The Desk shared a pixelated photo of the boy out fishing. The police in London have said he remains in custody as the investigation continues.

He appeared in youth court in the UK today to answer to two counts of breach of bail conditions and two counts of computer misuse. Youth courts in England are not open to the public.

In retweeting the City of London Police statement, the BBC's Joe Tidy wrote: 'This is very significant. But we can't say why because of reporting restrictions...'

On September 18, the hacker released gameplay of Grand Theft Auto VI, the next installment of the best-selling video game, in one of the biggest leaks in gaming history.

The hack saw the release of 90 videos of gameplay as well as revealing the identity of the game's protagonists, including for the first time a playable female character named Lucia.

The hacker was identified by the initials AK by The Desk and by the online moniker Teapottuberhacker.

Due to his age, the suspect in the hacking has not been named
The original post by the alleged hacker, known as Teapottuberhacker, announcing the leak

At the time of the GTA leak, the hacker also claimed to be behind the cyber attack on Uber

The Desk went on to report that AK is associated with the hacker group Laspu$$, which has been linked to the hacks of Samsung, Microsoft and Cisco.

The group usually steals source code from tech companies and then holds it for ransom while threatening to release it publicly, thus making companies vulnerable for further infiltration.

Following those incidents, AK was reported to have been living with his mother in Oxfordshire while those cases are pending.

His actions were also being investigated by the FBI.

A hacker has released gameplay of Grand Theft Auto VI, the next installment of the best-selling video game, in one of the biggest leaks in gaming history

At the time of the GTA leak, the hacker also claimed to be behind the cyber incident at Uber.

Later, he posted a message on the forum about seeking to 'negotiate a deal' with Take-Two Interactive Software, owner of Rockstar, which publishes the GTA games.

Multiple reports have said the hacker gained access through the company's Slack communication channels.

The hacker gained access by lying to employees of Uber and Rockstar and impersonating an IT worker, reports the New York Times.

The unprecedented leak includes over an hour of footage showing robberies, gunplay and open-world driving and was posted on the GTAForums message board last weekend.

It also shows some fully voiced conversations between characters, including a female protagonist, in a fictionalized modern-day Miami, known as Vice City.

In a statement published on its social channels, Rockstar said it was 'extremely disappointed' to have details on the game shared in this way, but claimed the leak would not delay the project.

'We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,' Rockstar said in a statement.

'At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.

In a statement published on its social channels, Rockstar said it was 'extremely disappointed' to have details on the game shared in this way, but claimed the leak would not delay the project

'We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way.

'Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.

'We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.'

Multiple videos have been removed from YouTube and Twitter at the request of Take-Two, confirming the legitimacy of the substantial leak, which was first reported by Bloomberg News on Sunday.

Take-Two has also reportedly ordered two of the largest online Grand Theft Auto communities to take down any links to the GTA VI footage.

'Do not share media or links to leaked copyrighted material. Discussion is allowed,' a banner on GTAForums' homepage read.

The hacker, who goes by the name Teapottuberhacker, claimed that the videos were downloaded from a Slack channel, likely belonging to a Rockstar employee

'It's a PR disaster, possibly sets back production and hurts morale,' financial services company Jefferies wrote in a client note, warning the potential leak of the game's source code could pose a bigger threat.

'If the source code leaks, it could necessitate significant changes under the hood of the game to ensure its stability, and the server integrity of GTA VI Online once it launches.'

Gamers and investors have been waiting for years for the release of GTA VI, the development of which was confirmed in February, leading to a more than 7 percent jump in Take-Two shares.

In July, it was revealed the game will be set in a fictionalized version of Miami, and will feature a playable female protagonist for the first time.

The woman, who is said to be 'Latina,' will allegedly be one of a pair of leading characters in a story influenced by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde.

The release could offer a much-needed boost to the US gaming company, which forecast weak annual sales in August.

The gaming industry, considered by some analysts as 'recession proof', has started to see some weakness as inflation-hit consumers rein in spending on entertainment.

Shares of Take-Two Interactive Software tumbled nearly 6 per cent in pre-market trading on Monday, following the report.

However, Jefferies analysts were optimistic about the game's success.

'Based on what we see, the game is further along than many believe and (the leak) won't impact game reception/sales,' the analysts said.

GTA VI is estimated to generate bookings of $3.5 billion at launch and an annual average of $2 billion thereafter, according to Bank of America Global Research.

Many developers shared public support for Rockstar following the leak, including Xbox corporate vice president Sarah Bond.

'My thoughts are with the team at Rockstar Games,' Bond wrote.

'It can be disheartening to have a project you’ve worked hard on to delight fans revealed and critiqued before it’s ready.
