Adobe Flash Player is finally laid to rest - BBC News

Adobe Flash Player, the browser plug-in that brought rich animations and interactivity to the early web, has officially reached the end of its life.

Released in 1996, Flash was once one of the most popular ways for people to stream videos and play games online.

But it was plagued with security problems and failed to transition to the smartphone era.

Adobe will no longer offer security updates for Flash and has urged people to uninstall it.

It will also stop videos and animations running in its Flash Player from 12 January.

Why was Flash popular?

When Flash was first released, a majority of internet users connected via dial-up connections that were very slow by today's standards.

But Flash let web designers and animators deliver exciting content that could be downloaded relatively quickly.

"You could make a full three-minute animation with multiple characters, backgrounds, sounds and music less than 2 megabytes (MB) and viewable from within the browser," explained animator David Firth.

His surreal animations and characters - such as the gangly, green hunchback Salad Fingers - enjoyed viral success before the advent of social media.

"I just made the stuff I wanted to see that I felt was missing: dark, surreal comedy," he told the BBC.

"There were no shortcuts to viral content. No corporate fingers twiddling the algorithms. It was simply attention-grabbing and quality material that rose to the top."

Sites such as Newgrounds - described as "the YouTube of Flash" by Mr Firth - sprung up to serve the growing demand for cartoons and interactive games.

"It was the first website I'd ever seen that allowed anyone to post content and it be available in real time. If the community felt the content was low quality, it would get removed at the end of the day so you actually had to take that into account when posting," he said.

What happened?

Flash was about more than just animations - it also let websites such as YouTube stream high-quality video.

By 2009, Adobe said Flash was installed on 99% of internet-connected desktop PCs.

But by then the world was shifting towards mobile devices and Adobe was slow to react.

"We had optimised for lower-end phones with Flash Lite," explains David Mendels, former executive vice president of products at Adobe.

"It was incredibly successful in places like Japan, but it wasn't the same as the full desktop Flash. It wasn't fully compatible."

In April 2010, Apple's Steve Jobs wrote a blistering open letter headlined Thoughts On Flash, in which he laid out why Apple would not let Flash run on iPhones and iPads.

Steve Jobs
Reuters

Flash, he argued, was cumbersome to use on a touchscreen, unreliable, a security threat and a drain on battery life.

He said videos and animations could instead be delivered with HTML5 and other open technologies, making Flash redundant on a smartphone or tablet.

"When the iPhone came out, Flash wasn't quite ready," Mr Mendels told the BBC.

"But also I think Apple wanted to create an Apple-only ecosystem."

Eventually, Adobe did get a version of its Flash Player working on smartphones.

But the internet had moved on. Big brands such as Facebook, Netflix and YouTube were already streaming videos to smartphones without Flash and in November 2011 Adobe ended development of Flash for mobile devices.

It continued to produce Flash for desktop computers, but the software suffered from multiple security flaws.

In 2015, Apple disabled the plug-in in its Safari web browser by default, and Google's Chrome started blocking some pieces of Flash content.

In July 2017, Adobe announced that it would retire Flash in 2020.

It said other technologies, such as HTML5 had matured enough to provide a "viable alternative", without requiring users to install and update a dedicated plug-in.

What happens to all the old animations?

Since Adobe will prevent Flash Player from displaying content from 12 January, there are concerns that years of animations, games and interactive websites will be lost.

Gaming company Zynga closed the original version of its FarmVille video game on New Year's Eve after 11 years, as it relied on Flash to run.

An open, collaborative project known as Ruffle is working to develop software that can play Flash content in a web browser, without requiring a plug-in.

The Internet Archive is currently hosting more than 2,000 items.

Its collection includes episodes of Salad Fingers, although David Firth has posted official copies on YouTube, which he considers to have been a "Flash killer".

"As time went on and YouTube offered higher and higher-quality video formats, there was simply no reason to post in the Flash format," he explained.

But since Flash was also used for interactive websites and games, there was "every reason to preserve the format", he told the BBC.

Many of the features animators used are still available in Adobe Animate.

In its final update, Adobe said: "We want to take a moment to thank all of our customers and developers who have used and created amazing Flash Player content over the last two decades.

"We are proud that Flash had a crucial role in evolving web content across animation, interactivity, audio, and video."

How can I remove Flash from my computer?

Adobe has provided instructions for removing Flash on Windows and Mac computers on its website.

It has warned: "Uninstalling Flash Player will help to secure your system since Adobe does not intend to issue Flash Player updates or security patches after the end-of-life date."

Savvy shopper's clever hack reveals expensive and cheap pasta can come from the same supplier - Daily Mail

Savvy shopper shares clever hack for slashing your grocery bill as she reveals how to check if more expensive products are from the same batch as cheaper versions

  • Maneet Kaur, 29, from Leicester, has revealed a clever hack to save on essentials
  • Revealed batch code helps you find out whether pasta come from same supplier
  • Expensive and cheap pasta can come from same batch, difference is in brand

A savvy shopper has shared a genius hack that could save you half of the price you pay for products in stores.

Maneet Kaur, 28, from Leicester, has revealed how you can use batch codes to find out if food sold for difference prices – pasta, for instance – is actually all from the same supplier.

Maneet had watched a video on how medication is marketed and decided to look into the food industry – and was stunned at what she found.

In a clip shared to TiKTok, the process technologist compares a 500g packet of penne pasta from Tesco, which costs 53p, with a packet by Hearty Food Co – also owned by Tesco – and shows how these appear to have identical batch codes.

She suggests that this means the products are from the same place and that shoppers are spending 26p more – nearly double – for the packaging alone.

Pictured left: a Tesco brand pack of pasta, costing 53p. Pictured right: A pack of pasta from Hearty Food Co, also owned by Tesco, costing 29p. 'I work in the food industry so know that whatever product we make will have a supplier code on it for traceability,' Maneet, who has 10,000 followers on TikTok (@minsmeals), said.

'I went into a supermarket and looked at staple foods like beans, pasta and bread and looked at the codes.

'It didn’t surprise me but essentially it’s all about how these brands market it to the consumer.

'The only thing I can do is make people more aware that buying branded is not always the best option and we need to be more conscious about the tricks supermarkets use.'

Maneet's trick revealed that you could pay 24p more for the exact same product if you buy the Tesco brand pack

Maneet, pictured, also said supermarket own brands will often be displayed at eye level, while cheaper options will be at the bottom of the shelf

She also has another top tip for shoppers: 'Branded food will most likely be at eye level while unbranded, cheaper items will be either on the top or bottom shelf.

'I’m sure if people had the time and were interested, the same could be applied to many other food items.'

Maneet loves sharing hacks and hunting down new snacks for her followers to buy, such as fun finds like popcorn-flavoured KitKat bars and punch-flavoured cans of Fanta.

She also went viral last year after discovering a cheeky hack for opening a tub of Heroes without breaking the seal – meaning chocolate lovers could pinch sweets before their family members without them even knowing.

This crypto-mining farm with 78 GeForce RTX 3080 GPUs likely rakes in $154,000 per year - PC Gamer

It seems only fitting to end 2020 on a depressing note, and to that end, a cryptocurrency miner living in Las Vegas has apparently managed to procure dozens of PNY brand GeForce RTX 3080 cards to mine Ethereum. How in the world he managed to obtain so many elusive cards is beyond me, but even if he paid second-hand prices, it will be a profitable operation before the end of next year.

Nvidia kicked off its Ampere party in the consumer sector with the GeForce RTX 3080, which released to retail on September 17 for $699 (MSRP). And by "released to retail," I mean it was available for all of a nanosecond before it sold out everywhere. Since then, Nvidia has launched three more models—GeForce RTX 3090 ($1,499), GeForce RTX 3070 ($499), and GeForce RTX 3060 Ti ($399), in that order—and those sold out immediately as well.

This has made it frustrating for PC gamers in need or want of an upgrade. Adding to the ire is the fact that consumers have been going up against scripted bots, making it even more difficult to actually buy a GeForce RTX 30 series card (or an AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPU or Ryzen 5000 series CPU, as it were) at regular pricing.

Throw cryptocurrency mining into the mix and, well, is anyone really surprised? According to TechArp, a fellow named Simon Byrne is running an Ethereum mining operation with 78 GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards, all arranged neatly on an open rack. That is, unless the pictures are Photoshopped—I have not been able to track down this Simon Byrne, so there's a chance it's a bunch of malarkey, just like the supposedly lost and found shipment of 500,000 GeForce RTX 30 series cards.

If this is a real operation, however, Simon Byrne stands to make a hefty profit. TechArp ran some numbers and they go like this. Suppose he paid second-hand seller pricing of $1,199 per card. That works out to $93,522, which we can round up to an even $100,000 to factor in the cost of the power supply units and the housing rack.

The average cost of electricity in Las Vegas for a commercial customer is 8.43 cents per kWh. That works out to $1,444 per month. Now raise that 50 percent to $2,166 to account for the cost of AC cooling. So over the course of a year, he'd be paying $25,992 in electricity and cooling. Add in the cost of the hardware, and his first-year expenses are $125,992.

Now let's shift to the mining haul. Each card has a hash rate of 83.57 MH/s. That works out to around $165 worth of Ethereum (0.22236870 ETH) each month. Multiply that by 78 and you arrive at 17.3447586 ETH, valued at $12,840 per month, or $154,080 per year.

Based on that math, Simon Byrne and his 78 GPUs stand to profit $28,088 in the first year, and $125,088 annually each year thereafter (unless I messed up the math somewhere).

Of course, this assumes a stable price for Ethereum. Cryptocurrency values fluctuate, sometimes dramatically, so this is more of a rough estimate based on current pricing. Still, it's interesting. And depressing, from a consumer gaming standpoint.

Fortunately, the shortage of GPUs will not last forever. During a third-quarter earnings call last month, Nvidia CFO Colette Kress noted that "given industry-wide capacity constraints and long cycle times, it may take a few more months for product available to catch up with demand." So hopefully this situation will not extend past the first quarter of 2021.

New Samsung Galaxy S21 leak could be bad news for a lot of people - TechRadar

Samsung Galaxy S21 leaks are coming thick and fast, but this latest one is, if true, certainly disappointing, with popular leaker Ishan Agarwal claiming that there will be no charger or earphones included with the upcoming handset in the UK.

Instead, according to Agarwal, the Samsung Galaxy S21 will only come with a USB-C cable. While this new leak only concerns the UK, we’ve also seen hints that in other countries, such as Brazil, the Galaxy S21 will ship without headphones and a charger.

It seems, then, that Samsung is following Apple’s footsteps, despite the company initially mocking the iPhone maker for not including a charger or headphones with its latest iPhone 12 devices.

More details

Agarwal also confirmed a 2,400 x 1,080 FHD+ resolution for the display, and the MySmartPrice website also quoted Agarwal as confirming the Galaxy S21 launch date as January 14, 2021.

So, should we give up hope of getting a charger and headphones with the Galaxy S21? Perhaps not. First, despite Agarwal’s reputation, these rumors are still unconfirmed, and until Samsung officially reveals the Galaxy S21, and what comes in the box, we wouldn’t get too downbeat.

Also, the tweet Agarwal posted that claimed there would be no charger or earphones included with the Galaxy S21 in the UK was deleted (GSMArena managed to take a screenshot of it, however), which could mean the tipster got further information that contradicted the leak, or otherwise lost confidence in their information.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Samsung will show off the Galaxy S21 at an event on January 14, so hopefully we won’t have too long to wait to find out what will be coming with the company’s latest flagship smartphone.

Relax, WhatsApp is NOT dropping support for your Android and iOS smartphones in 2021 - Daily Express

In the past few months, there have been reports from a wide range of publications claiming that  – the most popular chat app on the planet, with more than two billion users – will drop support for millions of devices from the beginning of 2021. This is something that has happened before, as WhatsApp has tried to balance bringing exciting new features to the vast majority of its users with supporting older platforms, like BlackBerry, to help a minority continue to use the service to keep in touch with friends and family.

According to these troubling new reports, when January 1, 2021 arrives WhatsApp will only support smartphones running – at the very least – iOS 9 on iPhone and Android 4.0.3 or newer for Android devices, like the Google Pixel, OnePlus, Samsung Galaxy series, and more. Devices set to be impacted by such a change to the list of supported devices include the Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, which are too old to be upgraded to iOS 9 or later.

However, there is one important thing that WhatsApp fans on iOS and Android need to know about this recently circulated warning. It's not true. Or rather, it is true – but the change that people are so concerned about has already happened. As the BBC, The Independent and Android Police (to name a few) have already reported, WhatsApp dropped support for iOS 8 and Android 2.3.7 towards the start of 2020. As such, users have been living with this change for months.

From February 1 2020, WhatsApp announced that it would only run on smartphones powered by iOS 9 and Android 4.0.3 or newer.

back in October 2019 that WhatsApp's support page had been updated to warn users of these forthcoming changes. The WhatsApp support page for iOS had previously stated: "WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 9 or later. On iOS 8, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts. If WhatsApp is currently active on your iOS 8 device, you'll be able to use it until February 1, 2020.

"For the best experience, we recommend you use the latest version of iOS available for your phone."

So, while WhatsApp does require iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3 – this change isn't on the horizon, it has already happened. Speaking about these changes before they were rolled out to billions of users worldwide, WhatsApp said support was being dropped for a number of devices to help expand the app's feature set in the future.

In a previous statement, WhatsApp said: "While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp."

So, if you've seen an article claiming that your smartphone will lose WhatsApp. Please don't panic. If you can open WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android phone today, then you're guaranteed to still be able to open it when the fireworks start on January 1, 2021. That's because the change you're being warned about happened months ago.

, Express.co.uk recently reported that WhatsApp users will need to agree to new terms and conditions which kick into effect next February. If WhatsApp users don't agree to these new terms and conditions, they will no longer be able to use the market-leading chat app. The notification from WhatsApp read: "By tapping Agree, you accept the new terms, which take effect on February 8, 2021. After this date, you’ll need to accept the new terms to continue using WhatsApp or you can always delete your account."

It's unclear what exactly the changes mean for users with WhatsApp previously telling Express.co.uk that they don't currently have a statement to offer. However, WhatsApp did confirm that all users must agree to the new terms by February 8 2021 if they want to continue using the chat app. A spokesperson also told Express.co.uk: "We’ll be updating our terms of service and privacy policy as we work to make WhatsApp a great way to get answers or help from a business."

Cyberpunk 2077 Refund Guide: PS4, PS5, Playstation Store, Sony - RealSport101

Cyberpunk 2077 has faced plenty of controversy since release, including CD Projekt Red offering refunds for players due to technical problems on current gen consoles.

For players looking to get their Cyberpunk 2077 refund on PS4 and PS5, here's how to do it.

Cyberpunk 2077 Refund

The Cyberpunk 2077 refund controversy started with mass criticism over the game's performance on current gen consoles. In response, CD Projekt Red put out a letter apologizing for these issues and offering players refunds on the game.

THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE: CDPR first responded to the refund controversy with an open letter

After this letter went out, Cyberpunk 2077 was removed from the Playstation store, and refunds were offered en masse for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X players.

How to Get your Cyberpunk 2077 Refund on PS4, PS5

To get your Cyberpunk 2077 refund on PS4 and PS5, here's the step by step process.

MAKE YOUR CHOICE: Players must chose between waiting for improvements or getting a refund on Cyberpunk 2077

You'll first go to this link on the Playstation website.

Afterward, sign into your PSN account, where you'll be able to begin the refund process.

Unfortunately from here the process is a wait as you'll have to have your refund request approved based on a number of variables like payment method.

Some players have reported massively long wait times for this process, so it's important to get it started as soon as possible.

Cyberpunk 2077 Taken Off of Playstation Store

After players ran into issues getting their Cyberpunk 2077 refund on PS4 and PS5 due to Playstation Store standards and processes regarding refunds, the game was removed from the Playstation Store entirely.

DOWNTIME: Cyberpunk 2077 is currently taken off of the PS Store

This helped along the Cyberpunk refund wave so that players could get their money back.

We don't have any updates from CD Projekt Red just yet on when the game might return to the Playstation Store, but for now, this will help along players in getting their refunds.

Cyberpunk DLC

Cyberpunk 2077 improves every week with many patches since release, and the first injective of brand new content is with the first Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, scheduled for release in early 2021.

While we don't know much about the DLC, we expect it will give players some more things to do in the game, possibly expanding on the story.

These iPhone and Apple Watch apps help you create and achieve New Year’s resolutions - 9to5Mac

2021 holds a lot of anticipation as the world hopefully recovers from the pandemic and people around the world have more clarity than ever about their priorities. Let’s take a look at some of the best apps to create habits, set stakes, and achieve New Year resolutions with iPhone and Apple Watch.

Table of contents

Rethinking New Year resolutions

While New Year resolutions can be a good place to start, they’re often too broad and/or not defined with actionable steps. Another tough aspect to New Year resolutions is they can be tied to guilt and regret, especially if they are something you’ve been aiming for or struggling with for a while.

I’ve found this approach from Tim Ferriss super valuable and effective: replace New Year resolutions with a “Past Year Review.” The idea is to intentionally look back at the last year (with your calendar if possible) and write down what things moved the needle for you in both positive and negative directions.

Then narrow down what 20% of things you did that produced the most impactful results (and guide what to do and avoid going forward). Read more about this approach on Tim’s blog here. If you give it a try, I think you’ll head into 2021 with more clarity on what’s important to you, what your goals really are, and more actionable steps to get there. You may still get to a New Year resolution(s), but the process of a past year review should offer some real added value.

Also keep in mind, while it may be tempting to tackle multiple new habits at the same time, many people find the most success with making fewer changes simultaneously. For more reading on making and breaking habits, James Clear’s bestseller Atomic Habits is very useful.

How to achieve New Year resolutions with iPhone and Apple Watch

iPhone and Apple Watch can be great tools to help you stay on track with your bigger goals and specifically, the daily action to make or break habits. Below we’ll look at 4 great apps to achieve your New Year resolutions with iPhone and Apple Watch.

Setting stakes

Stickk

I wanted to share this one first since setting real stakes can be a major factor in creating new habits achieving New Year resolutions. Often times we know what to do and how to do it but don’t take consistent action, and that’s what Stickk was built for.

Stickk comes from a behavioral economist and a law professor from Yale University and the main idea is “INCENTIVES x ACCOUNTABILITY = KEY TO SUCCESS.”

Here’s how the app works:

  1. Set your goal – ANY goal (lose weight, self-care, meditation, finish thesis…) and a timeline to achieve it
  2. Invite someone – a friend, coworker or family member – to hold you accountable & verify your progress
  3. Put your money where your mouth is! Set a price on inaction – add Stakes to your commitment (optional)
  4. Track your progress by reporting your successes or failures daily, weekly OR at the end of your Commitment Contract

Stickk is available for iPhone, Mac, and the web for free. You can download it on the App Store.

Tracking New Year resolutions with iPhone and Apple Watch

Ok, let’s look at some great apps to track your goals and habits:

Streaks

How to create habits on iPhone and Apple Watch - Streaks app

Streaks developer Crunchy Bagel describes the app as “The to-do list that helps you form good habits.” It lets you track up to 12 tasks daily, is super customizable with 78 colored themes, 600 icons, and how often a task should be completed repeated.

You’ve also got support for Widgets, Siri Shortcuts, Apple Health, and much more.

Streaks has won an Editors’ Choice award from Apple and has a very high average rating of 4.8/5 stars from over 14,000 reviewers.

Streaks is available for $4.99 from the App Store and works with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and iMessage.

HabitMinder

Create habits with iPhone and Apple Watch - HabitMinder app

This is another great app based on the same idea of a to-do list focused on habits. HabitMinder features mini apps and “sessions” screens.

Other great features include Widgets, a clean and simple UI, and it’s free to try before you buy it to unlock all the app’s features.

User’s love HabitMinder with an average rating of 4.7/5 stars across almost 4,000 reviews. It’s available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

HabitMinder is available as a free download from the App Store with a lifetime license going for $19.99, a yearly subscription at $9.99, and monthly running $0.99.

Create habits with iPhone and Apple Watch - Achievements app

This is a new app that takes an interesting approach to include both your big picture goals and the habits that will help you achieve them.

There’s a focus on a minimalist UI with haptic feedback and nice sound effects. It’s also got Widgets, and customizability with icons and 5 colored themes. Achievements also features over 300 quotes for some inspiration.

While just an iPhone app is available for now, developer 2196 has told us that an Apple Watch app is in the works along with a stats page, and support for more languages.

Achievements is available as a $4.99 download from the App Store.

Apple’s apps

If you don’t want to pick up a new app to help with your habits and New Year resolutions on iPhone and Apple Watch, you can always use the built-in Reminders app and create recurring alerts.

If you want to get more detailed you can also create subtasks in the Reminders app, and also leverage the Notes app for longer-form journaling/habit tracking.

And if you’re goal is health-related, you can keep track of your workouts in the Fitness app and other details in the Health app.

Wrap-up on New Year resolutions with iPhone

I try to keep in mind the most important thing isn’t which tool I’m using to keep track of my progress but it’s really about consistency with the daily action in creating a new habit.

Apps can be a part of achieving New Year resolutions with iPhone and the apps above are great. But clarity, incentive, accountability, and follow-through are what will make the real difference. Cheers to the new year and achieving your goals!

January's free PS Plus games include 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' - Engadget

January is just a couple of days away, and there’ll soon be a fresh slate of games you can pick up at no extra cost if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. Among the January selections is Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the third entry in the rebooted Tomb Raider series. This time around, Lara Croft uses her stealth skills and other field expertise to “save the world from a Maya apocalypse.”

In most regions, the lineup includes the PS4 version of Greedfall, an RPG with magic and monsters set in the 17th century. A PS5 edition (along with an Xbox Series S/X one) is in the works, but it’s unclear if you’ll be able to upgrade for free. Instead of Greedfall, players in the Middle East can claim Assetto Corsa and those in Japan and South Korea can snag Mistover.

PS5 owners can get their fins on an additional game, Maneater, in which you start out as a baby shark (doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo). You’ll grow and evolve as you munch your way through the ecosystem and seek revenge against a shark hunter. PS Plus subscribers in Saudi Arabia won’t be able to claim this one, however.

PS Plus members will be able to snag these games between January 5th and February 1st. Until January 4th, you can still score Worms Rumble, Just Cause 4, Rocket Arena and Bugsnax (PS5 only).

Tipster claims Samsung Galaxy S21 series will ship without charger and headset in UK - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Dating back to October, reports circulating the web speculated that Samsung may follow in Apple’s footstep and remove the in-box charger and bundled earphones with its Galaxy S21 series. Well, those rumors have only been intensifying in the past month and now popular tipster Ishan Agarwal also voiced his belief that Samsung will indeed cut out the in-box accessories at least in the UK. The tweet has since been deleted so we only have a screenshot.

The news comes after a certification listing in Brazil confirmed the S21 series will be sold without a charger and headphones. For what it's worth we still don’t have official confirmation if all three Galaxy S21 series phones will ship without in-box accessories. Earlier this week Samsung was caught deleting a Facebook post that mocked Apple for removing the charger with its iPhone 12 series.
